How to Download the Windows 11 22H2 ISO (What Still Works in 2026)

Windows 11 version 22H2 is retired. Microsoft’s public download page now offers the current Windows 11 multi-edition ISO, not a normal consumer selector for 22H2. If you need build 22621 for compatibility testing, an existing licensed deployment, or a controlled virtual machine, obtain it through an authorized Microsoft licensing portal or your organization’s verified archive, then check its SHA-256 hash before installation.

For an ordinary everyday PC, use the latest supported Windows 11 release instead.

What Windows 11 22H2 means

“22H2” is the Windows 11 feature update released in the second half of 2022. Its principal client operating-system build is 22621, according to Microsoft’s Windows 11 release information.

This is not Windows 10 22H2. A Windows 11 22H2 ISO is complete installation media containing Windows setup files; it is not merely a Windows Update package and it does not include a license.

Can you still download a genuine Windows 11 22H2 ISO?

Not normally through Microsoft’s current public consumer download workflow. Microsoft’s public page provides a current, multi-edition Windows 11 ISO for x64 devices. It does not establish that 22H2 remains publicly selectable.

The consumer dates are documented by Microsoft in its Home and Pro announcement. Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise dates are in Microsoft’s Enterprise and Education announcement and lifecycle table.

“Not normally available” does not mean that every licensed historical copy has disappeared. It means that you should not expect the public page to provide a supported 22H2 download button.

Download the current Windows 11 ISO instead

Use this route when you need installation or recovery media for normal use, a new virtual machine, or a personal computer that should continue receiving security updates.

1. Open Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page.
2. Find Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) for x64 devices.
3. Select the offered Windows 11 multi-edition package and choose the installation language. Microsoft recommends using the same language selected during installation.
4. Confirm the selection and download the ISO. The generated download link is valid for 24 hours, so generate a new link if it expires.
5. Verify the downloaded file’s SHA-256 hash when Microsoft publishes a matching value, then mount it or use it to create bootable media.

The multi-edition image uses the product key or digital license to determine which licensed edition can be installed; the ISO itself does not grant activation. The highlighted public download is for x64 devices. ARM64 media is handled separately, and an x64 ISO is not a substitute for ARM64 installation media.

Get 22H2 through an authorized channel

Use this route only when a specific requirement calls for build 22621 and you have the necessary entitlement.

Microsoft 365 admin center

Enterprise customers should sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center and search the available software downloads for Windows 11 version 22H2. Visibility depends on the organization’s licensing and administrator permissions.

Visual Studio Subscriptions

Eligible subscribers can check the Visual Studio Subscriptions portal for historical Windows downloads. A subscription does not guarantee that every edition, language, or release is listed.

Organization deployment archives

An IT or deployment administrator may have a properly licensed 22H2 image. Ask for the original file name, edition, architecture, language, release identifier, and a trusted SHA-256 value. Keep the verified file in a controlled archive.

Microsoft identifies the Microsoft 365 admin center and Visual Studio Subscriptions as additional download routes on its official download page. Do not assume that a generic Microsoft account will expose 22H2.

Verify the ISO before opening or installing it

In Windows PowerShell, calculate the file hash:

Compare the result with a trusted Microsoft-published hash or your organization’s deployment record for the exact same release, edition or product channel, architecture, language, and file. Microsoft explains this process on its download page.

A mismatch means the file must not be installed. Confirm that the expected value belongs to that exact ISO, check that the download completed, and download again from the authorized source. Never try to repair a mismatched image with unofficial tools.

Use the ISO safely

Mount and inspect it

1. In File Explorer, right-click the ISO and choose Mount.
2. Open the mounted virtual DVD drive.
3. Run setup.exe only after backing up data and confirming the edition, language, architecture, and release.

Setup may offer to keep files and applications, but that is not guaranteed. Edition or language differences, architecture mismatches, an older image being applied to a newer build, booting from media instead of launching setup inside Windows, and unsupported downgrade paths can remove that option. An older ISO is not a guaranteed in-place downgrade method.

Create bootable USB media

Writing an ISO to a USB drive is an imaging operation; simply copying the .iso file onto the drive generally will not make it bootable. Use Microsoft’s supported media workflow where it covers the required release, or a reputable USB imaging utility. Back up the USB first because creating media erases its contents. Microsoft notes that a standard DVD may be too small and recommends USB or a higher-capacity dual-layer DVD; see the download instructions.

Attach it to a virtual machine

• Select the x64 architecture expected by the guest.
• Use UEFI or Hyper-V Generation 2 when required by the hypervisor.
• Provide adequate virtual storage and memory and a valid Windows license.
• Keep an unsupported 22H2 guest isolated, especially if it must run software exposed to untrusted networks.

Common problems and fixes

The public page does not show 22H2

This is expected for a retired release. Confirm that build 22621 is genuinely required, check your authorized licensing portal, or ask your organization’s deployment administrator. If the exact build is not essential, use the current public ISO. Avoid torrent and file-hosting mirrors whose contents or hashes cannot be independently verified.

The download link expired

Generate a new link on Microsoft’s download page. Its public ISO links are time-limited to 24 hours; cached direct URLs are not a dependable workaround.

“This PC can’t run Windows 11” appears

Check the CPU, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and UEFI settings, memory, storage, and architecture. Virtual machines must expose the required security hardware. Downloading an ISO, installing it, and receiving support or updates are separate questions. Microsoft warns that unsupported hardware can have compatibility and update problems; use its requirements guidance rather than treating a bypass as supported.

The ISO is too large for the DVD

Use a blank USB drive or a dual-layer DVD with sufficient capacity. Media creation deletes the target drive’s contents.

The hash does not match

• Recheck the file path, filename, and expected value.
• Confirm that the hash is for the same edition, language, architecture, and release.
• Verify that the download completed.
• Download again only from the authorized source.
• Do not install until the values match.

Should you install Windows 11 22H2?

Choose 22H2 only for a defined compatibility test, historical software or driver reproduction, an existing licensed deployment, an archival recovery task, or a controlled virtual machine. All ordinary Windows 11 22H2 client editions are unsupported as of August 18, 2026, so they should not be recommended for an internet-facing production computer or a normal daily-use PC.

For new installation media, security updates, and the least complicated licensing path, download the latest supported Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft. If you must use 22H2, obtain it through an authorized channel, verify the hash, back up your data, and isolate the installation as appropriate.
