Spotify does not offer a separate download control for one individual song. With a Premium account, add the soundtrack track to a playlist, download that playlist while you are online, and verify the download before disconnecting. The saved track can then play without an internet connection.
What you need before downloading
Music downloads on Spotify require Premium. Spotify allows Premium subscribers to download albums and playlists for offline listening; a free account can download podcasts, but not music. You also need the Spotify app on a supported phone, tablet, or computer, an internet connection for the initial download, and enough free storage for the files.

- A Premium subscription: this is the account requirement for offline music.
- An online connection: use Wi-Fi unless you have deliberately enabled downloads over cellular data.
- Free device storage: Spotify recommends at least 1 GB of free memory.
- A current app: outdated app versions can cause download and playback problems.
The account is what grants the offline licence. Copying Spotify’s cached files to another player is not an alternative method; the tracks remain available through the Spotify app and your signed-in account.
Why one soundtrack song must be downloaded through a playlist
Spotify’s official offline workflow is organised around albums and playlists. A single soundtrack song does not normally show its own standalone download button. The practical workaround is to place that song in a playlist, then download the playlist. The playlist can contain only that one track, or it can hold several songs from the same soundtrack.

- EXPAND YOUR STORAGE. Insert your card to add massive storage up to 1.5TB[1] to your Android smartphones and tablets, digital cameras, and laptops.
- SPACE FOR MORE. With expansive capacities up to 1.5TB[1], capture and store hours of Full HD video[4], movies, music, games, photos, and podcasts.
- MOVE FILES FAST. Use your card with the SANDISK QuickFlow microSD UHS-I Card USB-A Reader[6] to achieve up to 195MB/s[2] read speeds [128GB-1.5TB models] and offload your content fast.
- LOAD APPS IN A SNAP. Rated A1[3], the SANDISK Ultra microSD card is optimized for faster app launch and overall app performance.
- EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
This approach also makes the saved item easy to find later. Give a one-track playlist a clear name such as Offline soundtrack, or add the song to an existing playlist that you already keep downloaded. The playlist itself is the download container; the track becomes available offline because it is inside that downloaded playlist.
Download one soundtrack track on a phone or tablet
Complete these steps while the device is connected to the internet:
- Open Spotify and search for the soundtrack song.
- Open the song’s menu and choose the option to add it to a playlist.
- Select an existing playlist or create a new playlist containing the track. A new playlist can contain just this one song.
- Open the playlist you selected.
- Tap Download. Spotify will begin saving the playlist for offline playback.
- Wait for the download indicator to appear beside the playlist or its tracks. Do not assume the process finished merely because the playlist opened normally.
Leave Spotify online until the indicator confirms completion. If the playlist includes other songs, Spotify downloads those songs as well, so check the playlist contents before starting if storage or mobile data is limited.
Download the track on a desktop computer
The same playlist method works in the Spotify desktop app:
- While online, find the soundtrack track and add it to a playlist.
- Open that playlist in the desktop app.
- Click the playlist’s download button.
- Keep the app open and connected until the download indicator shows that the playlist is saved.
Spotify’s desktop menu includes an Offline Mode option. The exact location and wording can differ between app versions, so use the app menu if you need to switch playback to downloaded content only.
Download a complete soundtrack album or an existing playlist
If you want more than one song, downloading the whole album or a prepared playlist is usually simpler than building one-track playlists. Open the album or playlist while online and select Download. Spotify then saves the tracks that are available in that collection for your account and region.
A playlist is useful when you want selected songs from several soundtracks. Add the tracks first, remove anything you do not want stored, and then download the finished list. This avoids downloading an entire album when you only need a few scenes or themes.
Downloading an album does not guarantee that every version of every song is present forever. A soundtrack can have explicit and clean editions, deluxe additions, or tracks whose licensing differs by country. Check the collection while you are online and make sure the specific version you want appears in the playlist before leaving coverage.

Can you download Spotify soundtrack music with a free account?
No. Spotify’s free tier does not provide offline music downloads, so a soundtrack playlist will not show the music-download control for a free account. Free listeners can download podcasts, but that allowance does not extend to songs, albums, film scores, or game soundtracks. Upgrading to Premium is the service requirement; changing a phone setting or clearing storage cannot substitute for it.
If the button is missing, first check the account shown in Spotify’s account page. A device can be signed in to a different account from the one that has Premium, particularly after a password change or family-plan invitation. Sign out only if necessary, then sign back in to the account with the active subscription.
Confirm that the soundtrack is really available offline
Verification matters because an online connection can hide an incomplete download. Before travelling or entering an area without service:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the downloaded playlist and look for Spotify’s download status beside the playlist or tracks.
- Start one of the soundtrack songs while still online to confirm that it opens normally.
- Temporarily disconnect Wi-Fi and mobile data, then start the same track again.
- If you want Spotify to restrict playback to saved material, turn on Offline Mode.
On mobile and tablet, Spotify places Offline Mode under Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline → Offline mode. Desktop has an Offline Mode option in the app menu. Labels can vary slightly with app updates. Offline Mode is a useful final check: anything that was not successfully downloaded will be unavailable instead of silently streaming over a weak connection.
Spotify normally switches to downloaded playback when the network disappears, but a brief connection can make an item appear playable even when it was not saved completely. Testing with both Wi-Fi and cellular data disabled catches that problem before a flight, commute, hike, or other trip.
Choose Wi-Fi or mobile data for the download
Spotify downloads over Wi-Fi by default. That protects a mobile data allowance from being consumed unexpectedly, especially when a playlist contains a full soundtrack album.
If Wi-Fi is unavailable and you accept the data cost, enable Downloads over cellular under Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline. Check the setting before starting the download, and disable it again afterward if you want future downloads to wait for Wi-Fi. The setting controls the transfer of the files; it does not remove the Premium requirement.

Manage storage before saving music
Spotify recommends keeping at least 1 GB of free device memory. That figure is a general recommendation from current Spotify Support guidance, not a guarantee that every soundtrack will fit. A long playlist, multiple albums, or high download usage can require more space.
iPhone and iPad
Spotify says downloaded music on iPhone is stored in encrypted device storage. You cannot move those downloads to a removable card. If space is tight, remove old downloaded playlists inside Spotify or free storage elsewhere on the device, then retry the soundtrack download.
Android phones and tablets
On Android, Spotify’s storage settings may allow downloads to be placed on an accessible external SD card. Availability depends on the device, the card, and whether Android exposes the card as usable storage. Open Spotify’s storage settings and select the card only if it is detected and writable. A card that is removed, corrupted, full, or no longer accessible can make previously downloaded tracks disappear.

Use internal storage when the phone does not expose a reliable card option. If you change storage locations, expect to download the playlist again; moving the card or changing the setting does not create a portable folder of ordinary audio files.
Desktop storage
Desktop downloads use the computer’s available storage. Keep free space available on the drive used by the Spotify app, and avoid cleaning or “optimising” folders that belong to Spotify. The app manages its encrypted cache; those files are not intended to be opened in another music player.
Limits that affect offline soundtrack listening
Spotify’s current Support guidance permits up to 10,000 downloaded tracks on each of up to five devices. The limit applies to the account’s downloaded music, so adding several large playlists can eventually reach it even when one soundtrack is small.
These are account-level practical limits, not a promise that every device has identical free capacity. A sixth device may require removing downloads from another device or managing the account’s device list before a new collection can be saved. If you regularly download complete film and game soundtracks, count tracks as well as playlists because a single album can contain dozens of songs.
Recommended Free Tools
You must also connect each device to Spotify online at least once every 30 days to retain downloads. Spotify’s offline-help page states: “You need to go online at least once every 30 days to keep your downloads.” This is an account and licence check, not a requirement to stream music every day. If the period expires, the app can remove offline availability and you will need to reconnect and download the playlists again.

Reinstalling Spotify also removes local downloads. After reinstalling, sign in to the correct Premium account, open the relevant playlists, and download them again while online. The playlist itself remains in your library, but its device copies do not survive an app reinstall.
Phone, tablet, desktop, and watch options compared
| Playback route | How the soundtrack is saved | Important constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Phone or tablet | Add the song to a playlist, open it, and tap Download. | Premium is required; iPhone stores downloads in encrypted device storage. |
| Desktop app | Add the song to a playlist, open it, and click the download button. | The computer must retain the Spotify app and its local storage. |
| Android with SD card | Use Spotify storage settings to select an accessible external card, then download the playlist. | The card must remain available, writable, and functioning. |
| Compatible Garmin smartwatch | A Premium user downloads supported Spotify music to the watch for playback without the phone. | Only supported Garmin models can use this phone-free route. |
| Free account | No offline music download is provided. | Spotify supports podcast downloads for free users, not soundtrack music. |
Use a compatible Garmin watch without your phone
Spotify supports offline music downloads on compatible Garmin smartwatches for Premium users. This can let you play a saved soundtrack without carrying the phone, which is useful for a run or another activity where the phone is inconvenient.
Watch support is model-dependent. Confirm that your Garmin model supports Spotify offline playback, install or open the Spotify app on the watch, sign in to the Premium account, connect the watch to Wi-Fi as required by its setup, and download the playlist through the watch interface. The phone-based playlist method remains the dependable fallback when the watch is not a supported model.
The watch is a separate download destination. Saving a playlist on your phone does not automatically place the same files on the watch, and the watch still follows Premium, storage, and periodic online-check requirements. If a watch download fails, complete the playlist on the phone first and confirm that the account and Wi-Fi connection work before trying the watch again.
Troubleshoot a soundtrack that will not download
The Download control is missing
- Confirm that the account is Premium; free accounts cannot download music.
- Make sure you opened a playlist or album, not only the individual song page.
- Update Spotify if the interface appears incomplete or an old version is installed.
- Check that you are signed in to the account that holds Premium.
The download starts but stops
- Check the internet connection and, if possible, switch to a stable Wi-Fi network.
- Check free device storage. Spotify recommends at least 1 GB of free memory.
- If you enabled cellular downloads, confirm that your mobile plan still permits data use.
- Restart Spotify and retry the playlist.
- Review whether the account has already reached the five-device or 10,000-track limits.
The playlist looks downloaded, but songs will not play offline
- Reconnect to the internet and inspect the download indicators beside the playlist and tracks.
- Turn on Offline Mode and test again. An unavailable track was not fully saved or is no longer retained.
- Check when the device last connected online. Downloads require an online check at least once every 30 days.
- If the app was recently reinstalled, download the playlist again; reinstalling clears the local copies.
Downloads vanished after using an Android SD card
Verify that the card is inserted, mounted, writable, and visible in Spotify’s storage settings. A failing or inaccessible card can invalidate the local download path. Move storage back to internal memory if the card cannot be read, free space, and download the playlist again.
A battery or cache utility keeps removing downloads
Spotify specifically advises checking cache-clearing or battery-saving apps when downloads repeatedly fail or disappear. Exclude Spotify from automatic cleanup or aggressive battery restrictions, then restart the app and repeat the download. Do not manually delete Spotify’s managed files while trying to free space.
A song is greyed out after downloading
Reconnect while online and check whether the track is still listed in the playlist and available for your account and region. A licensing change, an unavailable edition, or a replaced album version can prevent a particular item from playing even though the rest of the playlist remains saved. Remove the unavailable entry and add the currently available version, then download the playlist again.

A reliable pre-trip checklist
- Sign in to the Premium account you intend to use offline.
- Put every required soundtrack song in a playlist or select the complete album.
- Use Wi-Fi unless cellular downloading is intentional.
- Confirm at least 1 GB of free memory and more if saving a large collection.
- Tap or click Download and wait for the status indicators to finish.
- Test a song with Wi-Fi and mobile data turned off.
- Reconnect the device to Spotify at least once every 30 days.
- Keep the app installed and avoid removing its managed storage.
Which method should you choose?
| Your situation | Best method | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One soundtrack song | Create a one-track playlist and download it. | Spotify does not provide a separate song-download button. |
| Several songs from one film or game | Download the album or make a trimmed playlist. | You control whether every album track is stored. |
| Many soundtracks for travel | Use several playlists and monitor storage and track limits. | Playlists keep collections organised while the account limits total downloads. |
| Limited mobile data | Download on Wi-Fi and leave cellular downloads disabled. | Wi-Fi is Spotify’s default and avoids unexpected data use. |
| Android device with little internal space | Use a supported, accessible SD card through Spotify storage settings. | External storage may provide room when the device exposes it to Spotify. |
| Phone-free listening | Use a compatible Garmin watch with Premium. | The watch can hold supported Spotify downloads for offline playback. |
Bottom line
For a single soundtrack track, the dependable Spotify method is: add the song to a playlist, download that playlist with Premium while online, verify the download, and then use Offline Mode or disconnect the network to test it. Keep enough storage free, respect the five-device and 10,000-track limits, and reconnect at least every 30 days so the saved music remains available.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download one song on Spotify without making a playlist?
Spotify does not normally provide a standalone download button on an individual song page. Add the song to a new or existing playlist, open that playlist, and download it. A one-track playlist gives you the same offline result without saving the rest of an album.
Can I download soundtrack songs with Spotify Free?
No. Offline music downloads require Premium. Free accounts can download podcasts, but not songs, albums, film scores, or game soundtracks.
How do I know a soundtrack finished downloading?
Wait for Spotify’s download indicator beside the playlist or tracks, then disable Wi-Fi and mobile data and start a song. Offline Mode can provide an additional check by allowing only saved content to play.
