Download the map area while you still have internet, then confirm it is saved in the app before you travel. Google Maps works on Android and iPhone; Apple Maps offers offline maps on iPhone. Their offline navigation features differ, so save enough coverage for your route and check what your destination supports.
Download an offline map in Google Maps
These steps apply to Google Maps on Android and iPhone. The menu labels may vary by app version or platform.

- Connect to the internet and sign in to Google Maps.
- Open the place you want to save. Search for a city or town, then open its place sheet and tap More > Download offline map > Download. Google shows an estimated file size before downloading.
- To choose a custom area instead, tap your profile picture, choose Offline Maps > Select your own map, move and resize the rectangle to cover the area, then tap Download.
Google also describes the place-search route as opening the place’s information panel, tapping its three-dot menu, and choosing Download offline map. If the labels differ on your phone, use the profile-picture route to select the area yourself. Download an offline map in Apple Maps
On iPhone, open Maps and choose either method:
- Touch and hold the map until a pin appears, then tap Download.
- Or tap your profile picture or initials beside the search field, choose Offline Maps > Add Offline Map, search for a place or choose Current Location, adjust the selected area, and tap Download.
Choose a smaller area if you want to use less device storage. Apple Maps offline maps are not available in every country or region. Apple iPhone User Guide: Download maps to use offline.

Check these things before you leave
- Download over a reliable connection. Google requires an internet connection to download maps. Apple lets you choose whether downloads use Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi and cellular.
- Cover the whole area you need. For Google Maps, include the full driving route inside the saved map area; having the destination saved is not enough if the route extends beyond it.
- Make room on your phone. Review Google’s estimated download size before confirming. In Apple Maps, reduce the selected area to reduce storage use.
- Confirm the download in the app. Check the Offline Maps list before you go. Google says maps need updating before expiry and tries to update them automatically over Wi-Fi when they are within 15 days of expiry. Apple downloads update automatically by default unless you change the setting.
- Check destination support and needed features. Regional availability varies, and Google’s offline directions exclude some travel modes and live traffic details.
