Yes, but only temporarily. Before canceling, download eligible movies or episodes in the Netflix app on a supported Android phone or tablet, iPhone or iPad, Amazon Fire tablet, or Google Chromebook with the Google Play Store. Open the completed download from the app and test it before you cancel.
Downloads are controlled by Netflix and tied to your account and device. They are not ordinary video files that you can copy to a USB drive, move to another device, or keep as a permanent library. Netflix says canceling the account deletes downloads on the device; if you restart the membership later, you must download the titles again.

What happens to downloads when you cancel Netflix?
A cancellation request does not always end viewing immediately. If you cancel with time remaining in the current billing period, Netflix says the service continues until that period ends. During that remaining active time, a downloaded title can still be useful for a flight or another place without reliable internet, provided the download has not expired and you remain signed in.
When the account closes at the end of the paid period, Netflix’s download guidance says: “If you cancel your account, downloads on your device will be deleted. If you restart your membership, you’ll need to download them again.” In practical terms, downloading before cancellation is preparation for the rest of your active membership, not a way to preserve shows after cancellation.

- The download stays inside the Netflix app on the device that made it.
- You need to stay signed in to the Netflix account to access downloads offline.
- Cancellation removes the downloads when the account closes.
- Rejoining later does not restore them; you must download them again, if the titles are still available.
Check your device and account before downloading
Netflix supports offline downloads on specific app platforms rather than on every screen that can stream Netflix. Use one of these:
- An Android phone or tablet running the Netflix app.
- An iPhone or iPad running the Netflix app.
- An Amazon Fire tablet running the Netflix app.
- A Google Chromebook with the Google Play Store, using the Android Netflix app.
A television, game console, ordinary web browser, or a computer without the supported app is not a substitute for one of these download-capable devices. A Chromebook must have the Google Play Store; a Chromebook without it cannot use the Android app for this purpose.
Update the Netflix app before you start. Sign in to the account that will remain active through your trip, and check available storage on the device. Downloads consume local device storage, so a nearly full phone or tablet can fail even when the title is eligible.

How to download a movie or show manually
Manual downloads give you the most control because you choose the exact film, episode, or season. Use Wi-Fi whenever possible to avoid using a cellular-data allowance.

- Open the updated Netflix app. Sign in on the supported Android phone or tablet, iPhone or iPad, Fire tablet, or Chromebook with Google Play Store.
- Find downloadable titles. Open Downloads, then choose See What You Can Download. On a Chromebook, use Downloads > Find More to Download. You can also open a particular movie or series and look for its Download icon.
- Download a movie. On the movie’s details screen, select Download.
- Download an episode. On a series, tap the download button beside the episode you want. If Netflix offers it, choose Download Season to queue the season rather than selecting episodes individually.
- Stay on Wi-Fi while the download runs. The app should show progress; do not assume a title is ready merely because you tapped the button.
- Confirm completion. Return to Downloads and make sure the movie, episode, or season is listed there as completed.
- Test offline playback. While still connected, open the item from Downloads and tap Play. Let it begin, then test again with the device’s connection disabled if you want to verify the exact travel setup. Keep the Netflix app and account signed in afterward.
For a series, downloading only the episodes you expect to watch can conserve storage. A season download is convenient, but it can use more space and may include episodes you never reach before they expire.
How to cancel without losing access early
Netflix’s official cancellation path is:
- Open your Netflix account settings.
- Choose Manage your membership.
- Select Cancel.
- Choose Finish Cancellation to confirm.
Record the account’s stated end date. If the billing period has not finished, you can continue using the service during that time. Plan the download and your trip inside that window rather than assuming a downloaded file will work indefinitely.
Do not sign out after downloading. Netflix states that you need to stay signed in to access downloads offline. Avoid uninstalling the app, clearing its data, or removing the account profile used for the download before the trip; those actions can remove the local copy or require an online sign-in.

Why a downloaded title may stop working
Downloads expire
Netflix downloads are temporary licenses, not permanent purchases. Netflix says downloads expire after a period, and some titles have limits on how many times they can be downloaded or renewed because of studio and licensing agreements. The app will identify an expired item or prevent playback when its offline authorization has ended.

The title leaves Netflix
If a movie or show is no longer available on Netflix, it cannot be renewed or downloaded again. Netflix’s guidance is explicit: “TV shows and movies that are no longer available on Netflix can’t be renewed or downloaded again.” If an expiring title remains in the catalog, delete the old download and download it again while it is still available. If it has left the catalog, watch it while connected before it disappears.
The membership ends
Even an unexpired download is deleted when the canceled account closes. A downloaded episode therefore cannot be treated as a file you can keep after the final day of membership.
Download limits, plans, and storage considerations
Netflix’s Help Center documents different download allowances by plan. Policies can change, so check the current limits shown for your account, but the documented figures are:

These limits are separate from the space available on your phone, tablet, Fire tablet, or Chromebook. A device can reach its storage limit before it reaches Netflix’s account limit. If a download will not start, remove watched or unwanted items from Downloads, free storage on the device, and try again over Wi-Fi.

Manual downloads versus Downloads for You
Netflix also offers Downloads for You, an automatic recommendation feature on iPhone, iPad, and Android phones and tablets. Over Wi-Fi, it can download recommended titles without requiring you to select each one. Netflix says this feature is unavailable on ad-supported plans.

Use manual downloads when a particular film or episode matters for a flight. Use Downloads for You only when you are comfortable letting Netflix choose recommendations and your plan supports the feature. In either case, verify the exact titles in Downloads before canceling.
Troubleshooting common download problems
There is no Download icon
The missing icon normally means the title is not licensed for download or is not compatible with the device. Open Downloads > See What You Can Download (or Downloads > Find More to Download on Chromebook) to browse titles Netflix has marked as eligible. Do not try to bypass the restriction with a screen recorder, capture device, USB drive, or transfer utility; those methods do not create a supported Netflix download that survives cancellation.

- Confirm the device is on Wi-Fi and has enough free storage.
- Check that the app is updated and that you are signed in to the intended account.
- Remove incomplete or unwanted items from Downloads, then retry the title.
- Check the plan’s download allowance, particularly the 15-download-per-device-per-calendar-month rule documented for ad-supported plans.
The title says it expired
Delete the expired download and download it again if the title is still in the Netflix catalog and your plan allows another download. If Netflix no longer offers the title, it cannot be renewed; watch it online while it remains available.
Playback asks for an online connection
First reconnect briefly, open Netflix, and sign in if necessary so the app can refresh account access. Netflix requires the account to stay signed in for offline access. If the membership has reached its end date, the download will not become playable again simply because it is still visible in device storage.
Downloads disappeared after cancellation
This is expected behavior under Netflix’s cancellation rule. The downloads were tied to the active account rather than stored as independent media. Restarting membership may restore streaming access, but Netflix says you must download the titles again.
A practical pre-flight checklist
Complete this checklist before you leave home:
- The title shows a Download icon and appears in Downloads after completion.
- Every episode you need is present; downloading one episode does not automatically guarantee the rest of a season.
- You opened each important item and tapped Play to confirm it starts.
- The device has enough free storage for the trip.
- The Netflix app is updated.
- The account remains signed in, with the correct profile available.
- You know the membership end date after choosing Manage your membership > Cancel > Finish Cancellation.
- You understand that an expiration date, a licensing change, or account closure can end offline access.
What you can and cannot preserve
You can preserve temporary offline access to eligible Netflix titles during the remaining active membership period. You cannot turn those downloads into unprotected video files, move them to a USB drive or another device, or guarantee playback after the account closes. The useful preparation is therefore simple: choose eligible titles, download them on the device you will carry, verify playback, and watch them before the membership ends or the license expires.
