How to Download Google Maps Offline Maps and Navigate Without Mobile Data

Yes—Google Maps can provide turn-by-turn driving guidance without mobile data, but only when the complete route is inside a map area you downloaded in advance. Download the area while you have internet access, verify that it covers every road on your planned trip, and keep the file current. Offline mode does not provide walking, cycling, or public-transit directions, live traffic, or alternate driving routes.

The instructions differ slightly between Android and iPhone or iPad. A phone app also behaves differently from Google Maps built into a car, so use the section that matches your setup.

What Google Maps does offline

An offline map stores the map information for a selected geographic area on your device. Google says the saved map can guide you while driving to a destination when the entire route remains within that downloaded area. The requirement applies to the whole journey, not just the starting point or destination.

Function Works without mobile data? What to expect
Driving directions Yes, with a condition The complete route must stay inside the downloaded map.
Walking directions No Saved map data does not provide offline walking navigation.
Cycling directions No Cycling directions are unavailable offline.
Public-transit directions No Transit routing is unavailable without an internet connection.
Live traffic No Traffic conditions cannot be refreshed offline.
Alternate driving routes No Offline guidance cannot calculate online alternate routes.

Offline driving is therefore a preparation tool, not a complete replacement for connected Maps. If you might leave the saved area, need a transit connection, or depend on congestion information, arrange another source of information before disconnecting.

Before you download: plan the area, not just the destination

Download enough territory to include your starting point, destination, and every road between them. Selecting only the destination can leave part of the route outside the saved map, which fails Google’s condition for offline driving guidance.

Choose a generous boundary

When you frame a custom map, include approach roads, junctions near the start and end, and any plausible detour you may take. A larger selection uses more device storage, but it gives you more margin if you miss a turn or need to leave the planned road. Do not assume that a nearby downloaded city automatically covers the highway leading to it; inspect the entire route on the selection screen.

Check whether downloads are permitted

Google notes that some countries or regions do not allow offline downloads. Contractual limitations, language support, address formats, or other regional factors can affect availability. If the download option is missing for a particular area, Maps may be enforcing one of those restrictions rather than malfunctioning.

Use a reliable connection for the initial download

Connect to the internet and sign in before downloading. A Wi-Fi connection is usually the practical choice for a large area because the map file can consume substantial mobile data, although the exact file size depends on the area selected and the device.

Download an offline map on Android

Google’s Android instructions offer two ways to save an area: start from a searched place or draw your own rectangle from the Offline maps menu.

Method 1: download around a searched place

  1. Connect the phone to the internet and open Google Maps while signed in.
  2. Search for the town, address, landmark, or other place you want to cover.
  3. Open the place’s details card.
  4. Choose the option to download an offline map.
  5. Adjust the highlighted area so it includes the full route you expect to drive.
  6. Tap Download and wait for the transfer to finish before leaving the connection.

Method 2: select your own map area

  1. Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture or initial.
  2. Choose Offline maps.
  3. Tap Select your own map.
  4. Move and zoom the frame until your starting point, destination, and connecting roads are inside it.
  5. Tap Download.

On supported Android devices, Google allows the map to be saved to internal storage or portable SD-card storage. The storage preference is part of the download setup; changing it requires downloading the map again rather than moving an existing file in place.

Android storage and data-saving choices

Google documents internal storage as the default and portable SD storage as an option on supported setups. If your phone offers a download preference intended to save battery and mobile data while allowing other apps to continue using mobile data, enable it when that trade-off suits your trip. The setting affects how Maps obtains map data; it does not expand the geographic area you selected.

Download an offline map on iPhone or iPad

On iOS, Google requires an internet connection and the regular Maps interface rather than Incognito mode for the download workflow.

Method 1: download around a searched place

  1. Connect your iPhone or iPad to the internet.
  2. Open Google Maps outside Incognito mode.
  3. Search for a place and open its details.
  4. Tap More, then choose Download offline map.
  5. Resize or reposition the map so the complete intended driving route is inside the selected area.
  6. Tap Download and leave the app connected until the download completes.

Method 2: select a custom area

  1. Tap your profile picture or initial.
  2. Open Offline maps.
  3. Tap Select your own map.
  4. Frame the entire route, including the roads leading into and out of the destination.
  5. Tap Download.

The same route limitation applies on iPhone and iPad: a saved destination without a saved route corridor is not enough for offline navigation.

Android, iPhone, and car maps compared

Setup Where you start Storage or expiry detail Offline limitation to remember
Android phone or tablet Place details or Profile > Offline maps > Select your own map Internal storage by default; portable SD storage on supported devices. Changing storage requires downloading again. Driving only when the complete route is inside the saved area.
iPhone or iPad Place details > More > Download offline map, or Profile > Offline maps Download outside Incognito mode; keep the saved map updated before expiry. No offline walking, cycling, transit, live traffic, or alternate routes.
Google Maps built into a car Use the vehicle’s connected built-in Maps system Google says these maps expire one year after download unless updated. Real-time traffic and other connected features may be unavailable; availability varies by manufacturer, region, language, and data plan.

The phone and car entries are separate map stores. Downloading an area to a phone does not necessarily prepare the vehicle’s built-in system, and downloading in the car does not necessarily prepare the phone app.

Verify the download before you leave

Do not wait until you have lost signal to discover that the wrong area was saved. Perform this short pre-trip check while you still have internet access:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Open Profile > Offline maps and confirm that the saved map appears.
  • Compare its visible boundary with the full route, not merely the destination pin.
  • Check the map’s expiration or update status and refresh it if it is approaching expiry.
  • Start the planned drive with the saved map available on the device.
  • If the journey crosses a boundary, download an additional adjacent area or redraw one larger area before departure.

A practical way to test your preparation is to review the route with connectivity disabled before you set out. This confirms that the map file is present and helps reveal an overlooked gap while you can still correct it. Offline testing cannot create live traffic or a new alternate route, so treat it as a coverage check rather than a simulation of connected Maps.

Navigate while mobile data is unavailable

Once the map is saved and the route is covered, begin navigation as you normally would for a drive. The downloaded data supplies the road information needed for the offline driving guidance Google documents. Keep your expectations narrow: the route is based on the information stored at download time, not on current conditions.

What changes when you go offline

  • Traffic colors and congestion reports cannot update.
  • Maps cannot offer online alternate routes if conditions change or you miss a turn.
  • Walking, cycling, and transit modes are not available for offline directions.
  • Any road, address, or place information added after the download may not be present until the map is updated.

If you must change the destination after disconnecting, choose a destination that is clearly inside the saved area. A destination outside the boundary does not satisfy Google’s requirement for offline driving guidance, even if the first part of the route is covered.

Keep downloaded maps current

Offline maps are not permanent snapshots. Google says they must be updated before they expire. When a map is within 15 days of expiry and the device is connected to Wi-Fi, Maps tries to update them automatically. The automatic attempt does not remove the need to check: a phone may be switched off, short on storage, outside Wi-Fi range, or unable to complete the update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manual maintenance

  1. Open Google Maps and go to Profile > Offline maps.
  2. Select the saved map that needs attention.
  3. Use the update control shown for that map and keep the device connected until the update finishes.
  4. Recheck the map boundary after updating if your route or travel area has changed.

Update shortly before a trip, especially when your journey depends on recently changed roads or addresses. Updating refreshes the saved data; it does not add territory outside the existing frame. Redraw or download a new area when the route has expanded.

Phone app versus Google Maps built into a car

Maps built into a car follow a separate setup. Google says the car’s offline map must be downloaded while the vehicle is connected to the internet. Some functions, including real-time traffic, are unavailable offline, and feature availability can vary with the car manufacturer, region, language, and data plan.

Google also says car maps expire one year after download unless they are updated. That one-year rule applies to the built-in car system described by Google, not automatically to every map saved in the phone app. Confirm which system you are using before applying a maintenance schedule.

Prepare a car-integrated system

  1. Connect the car’s built-in Maps system to the internet using the connection supported by the vehicle.
  2. Download the area that contains the entire intended route.
  3. Check the system’s offline-map list and expiration information.
  4. Update the car map before its one-year validity period ends, or whenever the vehicle prompts you.
  5. Plan for the loss of real-time traffic and other connected functions when the car is offline.

A phone download does not necessarily supply the car’s built-in system, and a car download does not necessarily make the phone app ready. Treat them as separate map stores and verify the one you intend to use.

Troubleshoot common offline-map problems

The download option is missing

Confirm that you are connected to the internet, signed in, and using the normal Google Maps interface. On iPhone or iPad, leave Incognito mode. If the option still does not appear for a particular location, the region may not permit offline downloads because of contractual, language, address-format, or other local limitations.

Navigation stops or the destination cannot be reached

Inspect the saved map’s boundary. If any section of the intended route lies outside it, the documented condition for offline driving is not met. Reconnect if possible, download a larger area, and restart navigation with the complete route covered. If you cannot reconnect, use the saved map as a visual reference and do not expect offline walking, cycling, transit, traffic, or alternate-route features.

The map has expired

Connect to Wi-Fi and update the map from the Offline maps screen. If the map is within 15 days of expiry, Google may attempt an automatic update on Wi-Fi, but a manual update is the dependable recovery when you are preparing for travel. If the update cannot complete, check available device storage and redraw the area only after you have a stable connection.

The phone has insufficient storage

Reduce the selected area to the route corridor plus a reasonable margin, remove offline maps you no longer need, or—on a supported Android setup—choose portable SD-card storage and download the map again. A smaller map saves space but leaves less room for an unplanned detour.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You expected live traffic or an alternate route

Those are connected services. Offline navigation uses the saved map and cannot refresh congestion or calculate online alternatives. If traffic information is essential to your decision, keep a connection available or make a route plan before disconnecting.

A practical departure checklist

  • Internet connection active during download.
  • Signed in to Google Maps.
  • Correct platform steps completed: Android, iPhone or iPad, or the car’s built-in system.
  • Full driving route inside the selected offline area.
  • Map visible under Profile > Offline maps on the phone, or in the car’s offline-map list.
  • Map updated and not approaching expiry.
  • Alternate plans made for walking, cycling, transit, live traffic, or a route outside the saved boundary.
  • Phone or vehicle ready for a day without an active mobile-data connection.

A portable power bank can be a sensible accessory for a long driving day, particularly when you use a battery-saving setting, but it is not required to download or use an offline map. The offline-map feature itself is a Maps setting rather than a separate purchase.

Decide whether offline Maps is sufficient

Offline Google Maps is a good fit when you are driving a known route through an area you can download ahead of time and can accept guidance without current traffic information. It is a poor fit when your trip depends on public transport, walking or cycling directions, frequent online rerouting, or roads beyond the saved boundary.

For a mixed trip, prepare the offline driving area anyway, then save addresses, write down key junctions, and arrange a separate plan for the modes and information that Maps cannot provide offline. This keeps the downloaded map useful without treating it as a full offline version of every Google Maps feature.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Google Maps navigate me without mobile data?

Yes, for driving when the entire route is inside the map area downloaded in advance. Offline guidance does not include live traffic or online alternate routes.

Can I download only my destination?

You should download the area containing your starting point, destination, and every road between them. A destination-only download may leave part of the route outside the saved map.

Does offline Google Maps work for walking, cycling, or public transit?

No. Google’s offline guidance supports driving under its route-coverage condition; walking, cycling, and transit directions are unavailable offline.

How do I know whether my route is covered?

Open Profile > Offline maps and compare the saved map’s visible boundary with the complete route. Include approach roads, junctions, and any realistic detour before leaving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I get live traffic or a faster alternate route offline?

No. Traffic conditions cannot refresh without a connection, and offline Maps cannot calculate online alternate driving routes.

How often do phone offline maps need updating?

Google says they must be updated before expiry. When a map is within 15 days of expiry and the device is on Wi-Fi, Maps tries to update it automatically; you can also update it manually from Offline maps.

Why is the offline-download option unavailable?

Check that you are connected, signed in, and using the standard Maps interface. On iPhone or iPad, leave Incognito mode. Some countries or regions restrict downloads because of contractual, language, address-format, or other factors.

Does downloading on my phone prepare Google Maps in my car?

Not necessarily. The built-in car system has its own download process and map store. Google says car maps expire one year after download unless updated, and availability varies by manufacturer, region, language, and data plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What can I do if my phone runs out of storage?

Select a smaller area that still covers the route, remove maps you no longer need, or use portable SD-card storage on a supported Android device. Changing Android storage preference requires downloading the map again.

Do I need to buy anything for offline maps?

No separate purchase is required for the Maps setting. A portable power bank is only an optional accessory for a long day and is not needed to download or use the map.

The Bottom Line

Download a map area that covers your complete driving route, verify it under Profile > Offline maps, and update it before expiry. Offline Maps can guide driving without mobile data, but it cannot provide walking, cycling, transit, live traffic, or alternate-route services.
