Chrome usually saves the file in the Chromebook’s Downloads folder, which you can open in the Files app. School rules may block some downloads, so use only approved sources and ask a teacher or school IT administrator if a download is blocked.
Download a file and locate it
- Open the webpage that contains the file and select its download link or button. Follow any prompt shown by Chrome or the website.
- Open the Files app and select Downloads to find the saved file. ChromeOS supports many common file types, including documents, PDFs, images, and media. Google’s Chromebook file help explains how to open and manage files.
Choose where downloads are saved
Chrome saves downloads to the local Downloads folder by default. To change the folder or choose a location each time:

- Open Chrome and select More > Settings > Downloads.
- Select Change beside the default folder to choose another location, or turn on Ask where to save each file before downloading.
If your school allows it, you may be able to choose Google Drive or a Shared drive as the destination. Availability depends on your device and school account settings. See Google’s instructions for saving and managing Chromebook files.
Pick a destination that fits the file
- Downloads: A convenient local folder, but files take up the Chromebook’s limited storage. Google notes that downloaded files may sometimes be deleted to free space.
- Google Drive or a Shared drive: An account-based option when your school enables access. Follow your school’s rules for where classwork and other files should be stored.
- Removable storage: An option on some devices, depending on the device and school policy; it is not necessary for ordinary downloads.
For important schoolwork, use a school-approved location and follow your teacher’s or school’s file-storage guidance.

What to do when a download is blocked
Stop and ask your teacher or school IT administrator whether the file and its source are allowed. Administrators can configure Chrome to block dangerous files or all downloads, and they control access to services on school-issued accounts. The exact settings vary by school; Google’s Chrome Enterprise and Education download policy guidance describes the available controls, while its Google for Education privacy and security FAQs explain administrator control of school services. Don’t try to bypass a school restriction.
