The free Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo is scheduled to appear in Nintendo eShop on October 19, 2026, Pacific Time (October 20, 2026, British Summer Time). On Switch 2, open Nintendo eShop, search for Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo, open the free listing, and choose the download option. When installation finishes, launch the demo from the HOME menu. You can create a hunter and Palico, begin the opening adventure, and carry the demo’s save data into the full Switch 2 game scheduled for December 4, 2026.
When the Switch 2 demo becomes available
Nintendo has scheduled the free Prologue Demo for October 19, 2026, in Pacific Time. For readers using British Summer Time, that is October 20, 2026. The listing may therefore appear on a different calendar date from the one you expect, depending on your region and Nintendo Account settings.

Before release, searching the eShop may return no result or show other Monster Hunter products instead. That does not mean your console is incompatible. Search again after the scheduled regional release time, using the full title Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo.
The full Monster Hunter Wilds game is scheduled for Switch 2 on December 4, 2026. The demo is intended as an opening sample rather than a separate purchase: it is free, and its save data can be carried into the full game at launch.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
What you need before downloading
Sign in to the correct Nintendo Account
On the console, open Nintendo eShop with the Nintendo Account that you intend to use for the download and for the eventual full game. Nintendo’s download guidance says that website-initiated downloads require a Nintendo Account linked to the console.
Using the account associated with the Switch 2 avoids a common mistake: starting a download request from a different account and then wondering why the console does not receive it. If more than one account is present, check the account name shown when eShop opens before searching.
Register the Switch 2 as the active download console for website downloads
If you plan to start the download from Nintendo’s website rather than from the console, the Switch 2 must first be registered as the account’s active download console. Nintendo says this registration happens by opening Nintendo eShop on that device at least once while signed in with the linked Nintendo Account.
Recommended Free Tools
This requirement applies to the website route. You can still use the console eShop directly after signing in, but opening eShop on the Switch 2 is the necessary first step for a remote download request.

Install current system software and connect to the internet
For automatic downloading, Nintendo lists three practical prerequisites: the console must be updated to the latest system software, connected to the internet, and configured to allow automatic downloads. The console also needs enough free storage for the installation.
These conditions matter even if you intend to start manually. An interrupted connection or outdated system software can prevent a download from starting or completing, while insufficient storage stops installation regardless of how the download was requested.
Method 1: download directly from Nintendo eShop on Switch 2
- Open Nintendo eShop. From the Switch 2 HOME menu, select the Nintendo eShop icon.
- Choose the Nintendo Account you will use. Confirm that it is the account linked to the console and to your planned game save.
- Search for the exact title. Use the eShop search and enter Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo.
- Open the free listing. Check that the product is identified as the Prologue Demo and that the listing shows no purchase price.
- Select the download option. Confirm the download when prompted. The console begins downloading the demo to available storage.
- Wait for installation to finish. Keep the Switch 2 connected to the internet until the download and installation complete.
- Launch from HOME. When the demo icon appears on the HOME menu and the installation is complete, select it to start.
The eShop route is the most direct option because it does not depend on website-console activation. It also lets you see the live listing and the storage requirement shown for your region before confirming the download.
Method 2: start the download from Nintendo’s website
Nintendo supports website-initiated downloads, but the account and console relationship must be set up first. Nintendo’s requirement is explicit: a Nintendo Account must be linked to the console, and the console must be registered as that account’s active download console by opening Nintendo eShop on the device at least once.

- Multiple Capacity Options – Available in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB options to suit your storage needs. Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
- Open Nintendo eShop on the Switch 2 first. Sign in with the Nintendo Account you will use for the website request. This establishes the console as the account’s active download console.
- Sign in to Nintendo’s website. Use the same Nintendo Account that is linked to the Switch 2.
- Find the Prologue Demo listing. Search for Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo and open the free product page after it becomes available in your region.
- Choose the download action. Confirm the request on the website. The request is sent to the active download console associated with the account.
- Leave the Switch 2 ready to receive it. The console must have an internet connection, current system software, automatic downloads enabled, and enough free storage for the installation.
- Check the HOME menu. Once the download and installation finish, select the demo icon to launch it.
If the website does not offer a download action, verify the account first. The most likely setup issue is that the Nintendo Account is not linked to the Switch 2 or that eShop has never been opened on that console with the account.
Manual downloads versus automatic downloads
| Download route | What you do | Conditions to check |
|---|---|---|
| Manual console download | Open Nintendo eShop on Switch 2, search for the exact demo title, open the free listing, and select the download option. | Signed-in Nintendo Account, internet connection, and sufficient free storage. |
| Website-initiated download | Open eShop on the Switch 2 at least once, then use the same linked Nintendo Account on Nintendo’s website to request the demo. | Linked account, active download-console registration, latest system software, internet connection, automatic downloads enabled, and sufficient storage. |
Manual downloading gives you an immediate confirmation inside eShop. The website method is useful when you want to queue the demo remotely, but it depends on the active-download-console registration and the automatic-download settings.
Storage: how much space to leave on Switch 2
Nintendo’s US listing estimates the full Monster Hunter Wilds Switch 2 game at 39.1 GB. That figure is for the full game, not the Prologue Demo, and is identified as a 2026 Nintendo estimate.
A separate Prologue Demo size has not been published in the available product information. Check the live eShop listing for the current demo requirement and keep more free space than the displayed figure so the console can complete the download and installation without reaching its storage limit.

- The perfect card for the Nintendo Switch 2 delivers revolutionary performance that is 4x faster than typical UHS-I microSD cards
- PCIe technology delivers read speeds up to 900MB/s so the game loads faster
- Write speed up to 600MB/s deliver accelerated download speeds when paired with the Lexar microSD Express card reader
- Level-up your handheld gaming experience with next-gen tech
- 1TB microSD Express card offers more space for your favorite games
Switch 2 can use a microSD Express card for additional storage. Nintendo specifically notes that Switch 2 may require this format for expansion, so an older card type should not be assumed to provide compatible extra space. If internal storage is nearly full, install a supported microSD Express card before starting the demo download.
How to start the demo after installation
- Return to the HOME menu. The demo appears as its own icon after installation.
- Select the demo icon. Do not reopen the eShop listing unless you need to check the download status or storage information.
- Complete the opening setup. Follow the on-screen introduction and create your hunter.
- Create your Palico. The opening setup also includes Palico creation.
- Begin the opening adventure. After setup, the demo starts its opening content and records your progress in the demo save data.
Keep the demo installed if you want to continue using that save before the full game launches. The important point for transfer is the save data, not a separate code or manual character export described in the available product information.

Local play is supported
The demo supports local play. Nintendo’s product information says multiplayer requires one compatible controller per player, so a local group should prepare a controller for every participant before starting multiplayer.
Local play does not remove the basic console requirements: the demo still has to be installed, and each player needs a compatible controller. The available information does not specify a separate player-count limit for this demo, so use the number of controllers supported by your Switch 2 setup and the on-screen options.

Online multiplayer is not included
Online multiplayer is not part of the Prologue Demo. As a result, the demo does not provide an online mode for joining friends over the internet. Nintendo Switch Online does not add an online multiplayer feature that the demo itself does not include.
If your goal is to play together in the same place, use the demo’s local-play option and prepare one compatible controller per player. If your friends are in different locations, the Prologue Demo cannot provide that session type.
Does demo progress carry into the full game?
Yes. The demo’s save data can be carried into the full Monster Hunter Wilds game on Switch 2 when it launches on December 4, 2026. Create your hunter and Palico in the demo, then keep the resulting save data on the same Switch 2 system and Nintendo Account setup you use for the full game.

The available product information confirms save-data carryover but does not describe a separate transfer menu or list every item and setting that transfers. Do not delete the demo save if you want to preserve the progress that is eligible for carryover.
Digital preorders are scheduled to begin in Nintendo eShop when the demo goes live. A preorder is not required to download or play the free Prologue Demo; it is a separate purchase decision for the full game.
Troubleshooting download and launch problems
The demo does not appear in search
- Check the release date for your time zone: October 19, 2026, Pacific Time, or October 20, 2026, British Summer Time.
- Search for the full title, Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo, rather than a shortened phrase.
- Confirm that you are browsing the eShop region associated with the Nintendo Account you intend to use.
- Close and reopen eShop after the scheduled release time, then search again.
The website does not let you download it
- Open Nintendo eShop on the Switch 2 at least once with the intended Nintendo Account. This registers the console as the account’s active download console.
- Sign in on the website with that same linked account.
- Make sure the Switch 2 is online and has automatic downloads enabled.
The download starts but will not finish
- Check the console’s available storage against the live eShop requirement.
- Remember that Nintendo lists 39.1 GB for the full Switch 2 game, while a separate Prologue Demo size has not been published in the available information.
- If internal storage is insufficient, use a compatible microSD Express card for expansion.
- Install the latest Switch 2 system software and reconnect the console to the internet before retrying.
The icon is present but the demo will not start
- Wait until the download and installation indicators show completion rather than selecting the icon while installation is still in progress.
- Restart the Switch 2 and try the demo icon again.
- Check that the console has not run out of storage during installation.
Friends cannot join online
This is expected behavior for the demo: online multiplayer is not included. Use local play with one compatible controller per player instead.
