If the title is missing or shows a padlock, verify the purchasing account and transaction, check whether access came from PlayStation Plus or another user, restore licenses, and then retry the download.
What a delisting changes—and what it does not
A delisting means a game is no longer offered for a new purchase through the relevant PlayStation Store. It does not automatically answer whether someone who bought it earlier can reinstall it. Your result depends on the account that owns the entitlement, the type of access you had, the console and region involved, and whether Sony still serves the content to that account.

Sony’s general PS4 download guidance directs owners to the Purchased section of their Library. That guidance is the practical first test for a previously bought digital game; it is not a promise that every delisted title will remain downloadable forever, in every country, or under every account circumstance. Sony’s instructions do not say that a game must still be listed for sale before an owner can find it in Purchased.

Check these details before you start
- Identify the buying account. Sign in to the PSN account that completed the order. A different user profile may not see the entitlement.
- Confirm the transaction. Review that account’s transaction history and check the purchase date and title. This separates a completed purchase from a canceled order, trial, subscription benefit, or a title bought by another household member.
- Know whether it was a purchase or a benefit. A game claimed through PlayStation Plus can require an active subscription, and a catalog title can disappear when it leaves the catalog. Those conditions differ from an outright purchase.
- Check console storage. A download can fail even when the license is valid if the PS4 lacks enough free space.
- Have the add-on list ready. Base games and downloadable content can appear through different Store screens, so reinstalling the game does not always install every add-on automatically.
Reinstall the digital game on your PS4
- Turn on the PS4 and sign in to the PSN account used for the purchase.
- From the home screen, open Library.
- Select Purchased. This filters the Library to items associated with the signed-in account.
- Highlight the game you previously bought.
- Select Download. The PS4 begins downloading the game and installs it after the download completes, according to Sony’s PS4 download instructions.
- Open the game after installation. If an update is required, allow the console to download it; a delisting concerns Store availability and does not mean an already installed game can never receive or use its existing updates, but update availability can vary by title.
If the title appears in Purchased, this is the normal recovery route even when its Store product page no longer offers a Buy button. If it does not appear, stop repeating the download attempt and work through the account, entitlement, license, and service checks below.
Download the game’s add-ons separately
Expansion packs, season passes, costumes, maps, and other downloadable content can require a second navigation step. After selecting the purchased game in your Library:
- Open the game’s PlayStation Store page.
- Select Your Add-Ons.
- Find the add-on you own and select the arrow beside it to download.
- Wait for the add-on to finish installing before launching the game, then check the game’s in-game menu if the content needs to be enabled.
If an add-on is absent, verify that you are using the same account that bought it and that the add-on matches the game’s region. A base game and an add-on bought for different regional editions may not recognize each other, even when their names look similar.
Use a remote download when the console is not in front of you
Sony also documents remote downloads through the PlayStation website or PlayStation App. The remote route is useful when you want the PS4 to prepare a download while you are away, but it has extra requirements.

Remote downloading does not bypass an entitlement problem. If the game is missing from the account’s purchased content, resolve that issue on the account first. A PS4 that is powered off, disconnected, not set as the primary console, or not configured for automatic downloads may not start the remote job immediately.
If the game is missing from Purchased
1. Sign out of the wrong account
Households often have several PSN users on one PS4. The Library reflects the signed-in account’s licenses, not every purchase made on the console. Sign out, then use the account whose transaction history shows the game. If you cannot identify it, check the email receipts or each account’s transaction history rather than buying the title again.
2. Verify the transaction rather than relying on memory
Open the purchasing account’s transaction history and confirm that the order completed. A pre-order that was canceled, a failed payment, a time-limited trial, and a PlayStation Plus catalog entitlement can look like a purchase in memory but have different download rights. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends confirming the account and transaction when a purchase cannot be found.

License data can become out of sync with the account, producing a missing game or a padlock icon. On the PS4, go to Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses, then choose Restore. Wait for the process to finish and check the Library again.

Restoring licenses does not create a purchase and does not convert a PlayStation Plus benefit into an outright ownership license. It refreshes the console’s recognition of licenses already associated with the account.
4. Check PlayStation Plus access
If the game was obtained through PlayStation Plus, check that the subscription is active. For a game supplied through a Plus catalog, also check whether it remains in that catalog. A catalog removal and a Store delisting are separate events, and neither should be treated as proof that an outright purchase exists on your account.
5. Check sharing and the primary PS4 setting
If another user bought the game, Sony’s troubleshooting instructions say that the owning account should have activated the console as its primary PS4. Sign in with the owning account and verify that primary-console activation. Without the required sharing setup, another local user may see the game but receive a padlock or be unable to start it.
6. Check service status and system software
A Store or PSN service interruption can hide purchases or prevent license checks. Check PlayStation service status, then make sure the PS4 system software is current. Retry after an outage has cleared rather than repeatedly canceling a valid download.
If the download starts but fails
Check free space before changing anything else
On the game’s Store listing, Sony says to check the minimum free-space requirement in the Details section. Compare that requirement with the PS4’s available space under Settings > Storage. The console may need additional working space while it downloads and installs, so leave more room than the displayed game size whenever possible.
If internal storage is the obstacle, an optional USB extended-storage drive can be used for supported PS4 games. Sony’s guidance discusses PS4 games installed on USB extended storage but does not establish a particular drive model as universally compatible. Storage expansion is a capacity solution, not a way to recover a missing license.
Retry a stuck or failed download
- Open Notifications > Downloads.
- Highlight the failed or stalled item and choose Pause, then resume it.
- If it still will not start, cancel and delete the download entry.
- Return to the game in Library > Purchased and select Download again.
- Test the PS4’s network connection and retry on a stable connection.
- If the problem persists, use the PS4’s Safe Mode database-rebuild option as Sony lists in its troubleshooting steps. Follow the on-screen warning and do not interrupt the console while it rebuilds.
Deleting a failed download entry removes the incomplete local transfer, not the account’s purchase record. Do not delete saved data unless you have separately backed it up and intend to remove it.

A padlock is an entitlement or license symptom, not a single diagnosis. Use the cause that matches your situation:

What each recovery step can and cannot fix

This distinction prevents a common mistake: treating every download failure as a license failure, or every padlock as a storage problem. Start with the symptom shown on the console and use the matching check rather than repeating every step at random.
What Sony’s terms mean for long-term access
The practical steps above can recover an existing entitlement today, but they should not be read as a guarantee of perpetual redownload access. The cited Sony Interactive Entertainment US Terms of Service, dated March 2026, say that downloaded-content loss and ongoing storage and safekeeping are the user’s responsibility and that Sony is not obligated to provide replacement copies. Clause 8.16 states: “We are not obligated to provide you with replacement copies for any reason.”
That is a US terms document. It should not be extended automatically to other countries, whose terms may differ. It also does not establish the future availability of every individual delisted game. No general support page can settle the outcome for every title, region, account, or technical change.
For that reason, treat a successful reinstall as an opportunity to preserve access locally. Keep the PS4 system functional, leave adequate storage, and maintain backups of saved data using the PS4’s supported backup options. Backups protect saves and local data; they do not create a new Store license or guarantee that a deleted game can be redownloaded later.
A practical decision path
- Purchased appears and Download works: let the PS4 complete installation, then retrieve add-ons from Your Add-Ons.
- Purchased appears but the title is locked: restore licenses, confirm the buying account, and check whether the access was a Plus benefit or shared license.
- Purchased is empty for the title: verify the transaction and account, check hidden content and service status, then restore licenses.
- The download fails: check required space and network status, pause/resume, remove the failed entry, and retry.
- Nothing restores access: contact PlayStation Support with the account, transaction details, console region, and exact error message. Do not assume that a delisting alone proves the entitlement was revoked, and do not assume that a past purchase guarantees a replacement copy under every regional terms document.
Region, edition, and account cautions
- Region: Store listings, add-ons, service availability, and terms can vary by country. The core download instructions cited here come from a Singapore-region PlayStation Support page; the troubleshooting and license-restoration guidance comes from US support pages.
- Edition: Standard, deluxe, complete, and regional editions can have separate entitlements. Select the exact edition shown in your transaction history.
- Account: A family member’s profile, a secondary console, or a newly created PSN account does not automatically inherit the buyer’s license.
- Hidden content: If the title was hidden in the Library, use the Library’s hidden-content controls to reveal it before concluding that the purchase disappeared.
PlayStation menu labels and Store behavior can change. If a label differs on your console, look for the same functions under Library, account management, licenses, downloads, and storage rather than treating a changed label as evidence that the entitlement is gone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reinstall a PS4 game after it has been delisted?
Often, the first check is Library > Purchased on the account that bought it. A delisting removes the normal new-purchase listing, but it does not by itself prove that an earlier entitlement is unavailable. Sony does not promise perpetual redownload access for every title, account, or region, so a successful result must be confirmed on your own account.
Why is my purchased game missing from the Library?
Sign in with the account that completed the order and review its transaction history. Then check whether the item is hidden, restore licenses at Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses, and check PlayStation service status. A different household account, a canceled transaction, or a Plus catalog entitlement can explain why a remembered title does not appear as an owned purchase.

What does restoring licenses actually do?
Restoring licenses refreshes the PS4’s recognition of licenses already linked to the account. It can help with a missing game or padlock, but it does not create a purchase, convert Plus access into ownership, or guarantee that Sony will continue serving a delisted title.

Can I download a delisted game remotely?
