What you need before downloading
A Nintendo Account linked to your Switch user
The eShop download is tied to the Nintendo Account used on the console. The Switch user you choose when eShop opens must be linked to that account. If the user is not linked, the console cannot associate the demo with your digital library or start the purchase-free download correctly.

An internet connection
The console must be connected to the internet to begin downloading a demo. Keep the Switch online until the transfer has started and, preferably, until it has completed. A demo that has finished downloading is local software, although any online features inside that demo can impose additional connection or membership requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Check that the console has room for the demo before starting. If internal storage is full, digital content can be stored on an officially licensed microSDXC card sold separately. Confirm the card’s capacity and compatibility with your particular Switch model before buying; Nintendo’s guidance does not specify one universal capacity for every console or game.

Find a Switch game with a free demo
Use Nintendo’s free-demo catalog
Nintendo maintains an official Games with free demos catalog. It is the quickest way to browse titles known to have a demo, but the list is not universal: availability depends on your region and on the individual title, and it can change over time.
Search Nintendo eShop directly
Open Nintendo eShop and search for the game by name, or browse its categories. A demo is offered from the game’s product page when that title and your eShop region support one. Do not assume that every game has a trial download or that a demo available in one country will appear in another.
Recognize the correct download control
On an eligible product page, look for the control specifically labeled for downloading the demo. A standard game purchase button is different from a free-demo option. If no demo control appears, the title may not offer a demo in your region, the promotion may have ended, or you may be viewing a listing that contains only the paid game.

Download the demo on your Nintendo Switch
- Connect the console. Confirm that the Switch is online and that the user you will select is linked to a Nintendo Account.
- Open eShop. From the HOME Menu, select Nintendo eShop.
- Choose the user. Select the account-linked user who should receive the download.
- Open the game listing. Search for the title or select it from a catalog, then open its product page.
- Select the demo download option. Choose the control that starts the free demo download. No purchase of the full game is required for an ordinary demo.
- Watch the HOME Menu. Leave eShop and return to HOME if you want to monitor progress. Nintendo displays the download status there. You can use other supported console functions while the transfer completes.
- Launch the finished demo. When the download is complete, select the demo’s icon on HOME and open it. The first launch may take a moment while the software prepares its data.
The download creates a separate demo icon rather than unlocking the complete paid game. Progress can be checked from the HOME Menu, so you do not need to keep the eShop page open.

Start a demo download from a phone or computer
Nintendo also supports initiating a demo from an official game page in a phone or computer browser. This works only when the Nintendo Account used on the website is linked to the intended Switch console. Sign in with that account, open the eligible game’s official page, and choose its demo-download control. The console then receives the request and begins downloading when it is connected to the internet.
If nothing appears on the Switch, verify that the browser session and the console use the same Nintendo Account. Also confirm that the console is online and that the title is still eligible in your region. A remote request does not bypass regional availability, storage limits, or a requirement for the console to be connected.
Play the demo after it installs
Launching from HOME
Select the demo icon on the HOME Menu once the status indicates completion. The demo runs independently of the full game’s purchase process, so you can explore the available content before deciding whether to buy anything.
Online features inside a demo
Some demos include online modes, network communication, or other connected functions. Those features can have requirements separate from the basic download. Read the notices shown by the demo and follow any Nintendo Account, internet, or membership prompt it presents. The existence of an ordinary demo does not by itself mean that Nintendo Switch Online is required for every part of it.

Offline use
A normally installed demo is stored on the console or its compatible microSDXC card. After installation, its basic local content does not depend on continuously streaming the game. Individual features may still be unavailable without an internet connection if they are designed for online play.
Redownload a deleted demo
Most demos can be obtained again from their Nintendo eShop listing. Open eShop with the Nintendo Account that originally downloaded the demo, locate the same game page, and select Download. The content should begin downloading automatically, with progress visible on the HOME Menu.
If the listing no longer offers a download control, check that you selected the original account and that the demo remains available in your region. A title can lose its demo or change distribution status, so a previously installed copy is not a guarantee that a new download will remain offered indefinitely.

| Access type | What you download | Membership or time limit | Connection behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary demo | A free, usually partial version listed with a game | No Nintendo Switch Online membership is required simply to download the demo; any in-demo online function can set its own requirements | Installed locally; only connected features need internet after installation |
| Game Trial | The full game, offered as a temporary event | Requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and is playable only during the stated trial period | Downloaded to the console, with the event’s access window controlling playability |
| Cloud-game trial or launcher | A separate download or free launcher that streams the game from a server | Terms vary by title; the trial may be free while the streamed session remains subject to the service’s conditions | Requires a stable, high-speed internet connection while playing |
How a Nintendo Switch Game Trial works
Nintendo describes a Game Trial as “a free, downloadable full version of a game made available to Nintendo Switch Online members.” It is not the same as a normal demo: Nintendo explicitly distinguishes the two. A Game Trial is tied to a particular event period, so access ends when that period closes even though the full game was downloaded.
- Open Nintendo eShop on the Switch with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Select Nintendo Switch Online in the left-hand menu.
- Choose an available Game Trial.
- Select Download and wait for the software to appear on the HOME Menu.
Use the ordinary game listing when you want a conventional demo. Use the Nintendo Switch Online area when you are looking for a temporary full-game event. A normal demo does not become a Game Trial merely because both downloads are free.
Cloud trials versus installed demos
A cloud trial can look like a demo in eShop because you may download a small launcher or a separate trial application. The game itself is streamed rather than fully installed. Nintendo says a stable high-speed internet connection is required, so performance depends on the quality and consistency of the network used by the console.
Choose a conventional installed demo when you want the most predictable local startup and the ability to use its offline-capable content. Choose a cloud trial only when your connection can sustain streaming and you accept that the game will continue to depend on that connection. The eShop description should identify when a title uses cloud delivery.

- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
Free up space when the Switch reports insufficient storage
Check storage before retrying
An “insufficient storage” message means the console cannot reserve the space needed for the download. Review available space in the Switch’s data-management settings, remove software or screenshots you no longer need, or archive content to make room. Deleting a demo does not remove your ability to redownload it later when the listing still supports downloads.
Use a compatible microSDXC card
Nintendo supports storing digital content on an officially licensed microSDXC card sold separately. Insert a card that is compatible with your Switch model, then retry the download. Because capacities and model compatibility differ, verify those details before purchase rather than choosing a card solely from a generic “Nintendo Switch” search phrase.
Retry after making space
Once sufficient storage is available, return to the game’s eShop page and select the demo download option again. The HOME Menu should show a new transfer or resume the pending one. If the console still reports a shortage, free additional space and retry; the message refers to the storage location currently being used for digital content.
Troubleshoot common download problems
The demo option is missing
- Confirm that the game offers a demo in your eShop region; catalogs and promotions change.
- Search the exact game listing rather than a similarly named edition or bundle.
- Check whether you are viewing a Game Trial in the Nintendo Switch Online section instead of an ordinary demo.
- If a previously downloaded demo was deleted, open its listing with the original Nintendo Account and look for Download.
The remote download never starts
- Sign in on the phone or computer with the Nintendo Account linked to the target Switch user.
- Make sure the console is connected to the internet and has enough storage.
- Open the Switch HOME Menu to see whether the request is queued or already downloading.
The download stops or appears stalled
- Leave the console connected and check the progress indicator on HOME.
- Confirm that storage has not filled during the transfer.
- Reopen the product page and select the download control again if the transfer did not complete.
The demo opens but an online mode will not work
- Read the mode-specific notice shown by the game.
- Verify the console’s internet connection.
- Follow any separate Nintendo Switch Online or Nintendo Account requirement for that online feature; those conditions do not necessarily apply to offline portions.
A cloud trial is unplayable
- Use a stable, high-speed connection as Nintendo requires for cloud games.
- Reduce competing network traffic or move the console closer to the wireless access point.
- Remember that a cloud trial cannot be converted into a fully installed copy simply by downloading its launcher.
Which free option should you choose?
| Your goal | Best match | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Sample part of a game before buying | Ordinary demo | It is a free tryout attached to the game’s listing and does not require Nintendo Switch Online just for the download. |
| Play the complete game during a Nintendo event | Game Trial | The full software is downloadable, but an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and the event’s time window apply. |
| Try a title that is delivered from servers | Cloud trial | The launcher is small, but sustained high-speed internet is required for the streamed game. |
| Console storage is nearly full | Compatible microSDXC expansion | Digital content can be stored on a separately purchased, officially licensed card after compatibility and capacity are verified. |
For most first-time players, start with the game’s own eShop page and look for the ordinary demo control. Only move to the Nintendo Switch Online menu when the offer is identified as a Game Trial, and treat a cloud label as a warning that the game will rely on a fast, stable connection.
