You can download an NVIDIA driver directly from NVIDIA and install it without GeForce Experience. Use NVIDIA’s manual driver search, select the exact graphics product and Windows version, choose Game Ready or Studio according to your workload, then review the components offered by the downloaded installer and decline any optional NVIDIA App installation if you do not want it.
What you need before downloading
The correct driver is determined by your graphics processor and operating system, not by a generic NVIDIA download page. Before opening the search form, record the exact GPU model and Windows edition or version on the computer you will update. A driver for a different product family can fail to install, omit support for your hardware, or create unnecessary troubleshooting.

Find the GPU model in Windows
- Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Read the complete NVIDIA product name. If more than one adapter appears, note each one and determine which adapter the monitor or application uses.
You can also open Settings > System > About to confirm the Windows edition and system type. If Device Manager shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, Windows may be using a temporary display driver; continue by identifying the physical NVIDIA card from the computer’s documentation or the original purchase record.

Use NVIDIA’s official manual driver search
NVIDIA provides an Official Drivers search that lets you choose the product category, series, exact product, operating system, language, and download type. This is the direct alternative to obtaining a driver through GeForce Experience or the NVIDIA App.
- Open NVIDIA’s official driver-search page in a browser.
- Set Product Type to the category that matches the card, such as GeForce, RTX/Quadro professional hardware, or another category shown for your product.
- Choose the correct Product Series. Mobile and desktop series can appear as separate families, so do not substitute one for the other.
- Choose the exact Product name recorded from Device Manager.
- Select the installed Operating System and the preferred Language.
- Select the available Download Type, such as Game Ready or Studio when those choices are offered for the product.
- Submit the search and wait for the matched result. Download only after checking that the result identifies your product and operating system.
NVIDIA’s search page also exposes routes to beta or older releases and to legacy-product drivers. Those links are useful when a current branch does not support an older card or when a particular application requires an earlier release. A legacy link is not a reason to install an older package on a modern GPU; use it only when the hardware or software requirement calls for it.
Choose Game Ready or Studio
For GeForce products, NVIDIA describes the two main driver branches by their optimization target. Game Ready is aimed at gaming releases and game-focused updates. Studio is aimed at creative applications and workflows such as video, 3D, photography, and design. Both choices still require an exact GPU and operating-system match.

| Decision factor | Game Ready | Studio |
|---|---|---|
| Primary workload | Playing current and frequently updated games | Creative applications and production workflows |
| What to prioritize | Game support and game-focused optimization | Application-focused validation and stability for supported creative software |
| Hardware requirement | The exact NVIDIA product and operating-system match shown by the live search result | |
| Can you switch later? | Yes. Search again for the other branch and install the matching package when your workload changes. | |
If you play games occasionally but spend most of your time editing or rendering, choose the branch that serves the work that matters most. There is no universal “best” branch independent of workload. NVIDIA’s current result is the authority on which branch is offered for a particular product and operating system.
Verify the matched driver before downloading
Do not rely on a version number copied from an older guide. NVIDIA lists the matched package’s version, release date, operating system, language, and file size on the driver-details page, and those values can change by model and operating system.
- Version: confirm that the package is intended for the selected product and branch.
- Release date: use it to understand how recent the package is, but do not assume the newest date is automatically appropriate for a legacy device or a known application requirement.
- Operating system: make sure it matches the Windows installation you checked earlier.
- Language: select the language you want the installer and related components to use.
- File size: check that the download is complete and that your connection and disk have enough free space.
Because NVIDIA updates these listings, a version or date quoted in an old article may no longer be the current match. Consult the live NVIDIA result each time you download.

Download the package directly
- On the matched driver-details page, review the product, operating system, language, version, date, and size one more time.
- Select the download control supplied by NVIDIA.
- Save the executable somewhere easy to find, such as your Downloads folder. Avoid renaming it until installation is complete.
- Wait for the browser to finish downloading. If the browser reports an interrupted or incomplete download, delete that file and start again rather than running a partial package.
You do not need GeForce Experience to obtain this file. NVIDIA’s manual search and driver-details pages provide the standalone driver package. A current NVIDIA driver-details page may describe the NVIDIA App as an additional installation option; that wording does not mean the app is required for the graphics driver itself.

Install the driver without the companion app
The downloaded NVIDIA package is an installer for the driver and any components offered by that particular release. NVIDIA does not guarantee that every package presents identical screens or labels, so read each page instead of following a fixed checkbox script from an older guide.
- Close games, video editors, 3D applications, and other programs that use the GPU.
- Right-click the downloaded NVIDIA executable and choose Run as administrator if Windows requests elevation.
- Allow the package to unpack and begin setup. The first screen may ask where temporary installation files should be extracted.
- Read the license and setup information, then continue only when the product and operating system shown by the installer are correct.
- Review the components offered by that specific installer. If it offers an optional NVIDIA App installation and you do not want the app, decline that optional component using the choice presented on your screen.
- Choose the installation mode offered by the package. If you need to preserve existing settings, use the standard or express path supplied by the installer. If you are correcting a damaged installation and the package provides a clean-install option, read its warning because it can reset NVIDIA settings and remove components from the existing driver.
- Start the installation and do not shut down the PC while files are being copied.
- Restart Windows when the installer requests it, even if the display appears to work before the restart.
The exact component list and labels are release-dependent. Do not assume that a checkbox named “NVIDIA App,” “GeForce Experience,” or another companion component appears in every package. The safe rule is to inspect the current installer and install only the components you want.
Confirm that the driver installed
Check Device Manager
- Open Device Manager again and expand Display adapters.
- Open the NVIDIA adapter’s Properties and select the Driver tab.
- Check that Windows reports a driver provider and a driver date or version after the installation.
The displayed date and version should correspond to the package you downloaded, allowing for the way Windows formats those fields. If the adapter still appears as Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, the installation did not complete or the wrong package was selected.
Check the NVIDIA control panel
Right-click the Windows desktop and look for the NVIDIA control-panel entry, or search for it from Start. If it opens, inspect its system-information page for the GPU and driver version. The control panel is a verification aid; it is not required to download future drivers manually.
Test the workload that motivated the update
Launch the game or creative application that required the update and check for the specific behavior you were addressing. A successful installation means Windows recognizes the adapter and the driver loads; it does not guarantee that every application, setting, or plug-in will behave identically after an update.

When to use an older, beta, or legacy driver
NVIDIA’s driver pages include paths for beta or older releases and for legacy products. Use those paths for a defined compatibility reason, such as an older GPU, an application that requires a particular branch, or a regression that began with a newer release.
- Record the current driver version before changing it.
- Read the product and operating-system match on the older result just as carefully as on a current result.
- Keep the downloaded installer for the version that worked so you can recover without searching again.
- Do not install a beta package on a production machine unless you accept the possibility of unfinished behavior.
“Older” does not automatically mean “more stable,” and “newest” does not automatically mean “best” for every application. Choose based on a concrete compatibility requirement.
Troubleshooting a failed or unwanted installation
The installer says the hardware is unsupported
Return to the manual search and compare the selected product category, series, and exact product with Device Manager. Laptop variants and desktop variants can have similar names but different entries. Also verify the operating-system selection. Downloading a package for a nearby model is not a reliable workaround.
The download is incomplete or will not start
Check the file size shown on NVIDIA’s driver-details page, remove the partial file, and download again. If the browser repeatedly interrupts the transfer, try a stable connection or another browser, then verify the resulting file before running it.
The display flickers or resolution changes during setup
Temporary flickering, a black screen, or a resolution change can occur while Windows switches display drivers. Wait for the installer to finish and restart when prompted. If the display does not recover after the restart, use Windows recovery or Device Manager to return to the previous working driver, then recheck the product and operating-system selections before trying again.
The NVIDIA App appeared even though you did not want it
Open the installed-apps list in Windows and remove the optional app if it was installed. The driver can remain installed. On a future installation, read the component screen and decline the optional app choice if the package presents one. Because component labels vary by release, judge the current screen rather than relying on an old screenshot.

A game or creative application performs worse
Confirm that you installed the branch intended for the workload: Game Ready for a gaming-first system or Studio for a creative-application-first system. If the problem began immediately after an update, compare the current version with the previous installer you saved and use NVIDIA’s older-driver path when a rollback is justified.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWindows reinstalls a different driver
Windows can obtain display drivers through its own update mechanisms. If the installed version changes, note the replacement version, then repeat the NVIDIA search using the exact product and operating system. Keep the NVIDIA installer available so you can reinstall the intended version if necessary.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Linux: use the distribution’s supported path first
The Windows procedure above does not apply directly to Linux. NVIDIA notes that many Linux distributions provide native driver packages and instructions that can integrate better with the distribution’s framework than NVIDIA’s standalone package.
- Identify the Linux distribution and release running on the computer.
- Read that distribution’s official NVIDIA-driver documentation and package information.
- Prefer the distribution-native package when it is maintained for your release and hardware.
- Use NVIDIA’s standalone Linux package only after checking the distribution guidance and understanding how it interacts with kernel updates, display services, and package management.
There is no single safe Linux command that applies to every distribution. Package names, repositories, signing procedures, and reboot steps differ, so do not copy a command written for another distribution. If your distribution provides a tested NVIDIA package, that is usually the first path to evaluate.
How to keep manual driver installs manageable
Keep a small record
For each installation, note the GPU model, operating system, driver branch, version, release date, and whether the optional NVIDIA App was installed. This record makes it easier to reproduce a working setup or explain a failure.
