Download GTA Online from the official store for the platform and generation you own, then install it through the library tied to your purchase. On PC, use the same storefront that holds your entitlement—Steam, Epic Games Store, or Rockstar Games Launcher—and sign in to a Rockstar Games account. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, you can buy the standalone GTA Online product or a qualifying Grand Theft Auto V edition; older consoles require the listing made for their generation. The November 11–17, 2025 console free trial has ended, so do not expect a current universal free download.
Before you download
GTA Online is sold as a standalone product on current-generation consoles and is also included with many Grand Theft Auto V editions. The exact entitlement matters: a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S product is not automatically the same as a PS4 or Xbox One product, and PC Enhanced availability depends on the storefront account that owns Grand Theft Auto V.

How to download and install GTA Online on PC
Choose the storefront where you bought or claimed the game. Installing a copy from a different storefront does not transfer the entitlement automatically. Steam and Epic installations still use Rockstar’s account and supporting launcher services.
PC requirements that apply across storefronts
Rockstar’s account-requirements guidance, updated October 4, 2024, says a Rockstar Games account is required on PC for installation and online play. You also need an internet connection and Rockstar launcher-related components. Steam’s GTA V Enhanced listing, released March 4, 2025, states 105 GB of available storage and an SSD requirement, along with internet access for activation, online play, and periodic entitlement verification. Treat those numbers as edition-specific rather than permanent specifications; open the current store listing before installing after a major update.

On PC, the game listing generally combines Story Mode and GTA Online. Buying or owning the PC listing therefore provides the entitlement shown by that storefront; it does not remove the Rockstar account requirement.
Steam installation
- Open the Steam client and sign in to the account that owns Grand Theft Auto V or GTA Online.
- Open Library and select the GTA V Enhanced listing. If you do not own it, open the current store page and complete the purchase before returning to the library.
- Select Install, choose a drive with at least the listed free space, and confirm the destination. An SSD is required by the cited Enhanced listing.
- Allow Steam to download the game and any updates. Keep the Steam client open until the installation completes.
- Launch the game. When prompted, sign in to or create a Rockstar Games account and complete any account-linking or activation screens.
Steam ownership does not bypass Rockstar’s activation and entitlement checks. If the game starts a Rockstar launcher installation, allow that supporting component to install and sign in with the account associated with your purchase.
Epic Games Store installation
- Open the Epic Games Launcher and sign in to the Epic account that owns GTA V.
- Select Library and locate Grand Theft Auto V.
- Select the game, choose an installation directory, and select Install.
- Wait for the download and any prerequisite Rockstar components to finish, then launch the game from Epic or the installed shortcut.
- Sign in to the required Rockstar Games account when the launcher requests it.
Epic states that existing GTA V owners receive the Enhanced version automatically. If Enhanced does not appear, Epic’s support steps are to reset the Library filters, restart the Epic Games Launcher, and clear its cache before checking the library again.
Rockstar Games Launcher or Rockstar store installation
- Install and open Rockstar Games Launcher, then sign in to the Rockstar Games account that owns the product.
- Open the launcher library and select the GTA V or GTA Online product attached to your account.
- Choose Install, select a drive and folder, review the displayed storage requirement, and start the download.
- Leave the launcher running while it installs updates and required components.
- Launch GTA Online after installation and complete any first-run account or privacy prompts.
If the product is missing, verify that you are using the same Rockstar account used at purchase. A Steam or Epic purchase can also require the associated platform account to be signed in before Rockstar recognizes the entitlement.

How to install GTA Online on PlayStation 5
Rockstar’s standalone-access guidance identifies the PlayStation Store as the purchase route for GTA Online on PS5. Search the store for the standalone GTA Online product or the current GTA V edition that includes it, and check that the product is labeled for PS5 before buying or downloading.
- On the PS5, open the PlayStation Store and search for GTA Online or Grand Theft Auto V.
- Open the product page and verify that it is the PS5 version. Review whether the page says Purchase, Download, or Add to Library; the wording depends on your entitlement.
- Complete the purchase or claim process if necessary.
- Start the download from the product page or from your game library. Select the PS5 version if more than one version is displayed.
- Wait for installation and updates to finish, then start GTA Online and sign in when the game requests a Rockstar Games account.
Rockstar’s account guidance says a Rockstar account is not required for PS5 Story Mode, but some online features require one. GTA Online itself should be treated as requiring the appropriate online account and service access.
PS5 upgrade and PS4 disc ownership
Rockstar’s free-upgrade support article explains that PS4 disc owners use the disc to verify PS4 ownership when obtaining the PS5 upgrade. The disc must remain available for verification when required; owning a PS4 disc does not mean the PS5 digital product is universally free or detached from the disc entitlement. Use the PlayStation Store library and select the product explicitly marked for PS4. The cited support material does not provide a current button-by-button PS4 walkthrough, so avoid selecting a PS5-only standalone page when your console is a PS4.

- Open the PlayStation Store on the PS4 and search for Grand Theft Auto V or GTA Online.
- Confirm that the listing supports PS4 and that the displayed account owns or can purchase it.
- Complete the purchase or choose the download option for an item already in your library.
- Monitor the download from the PS4 notifications area and allow all updates to install.
- Start the game and sign in to the requested Rockstar account for online play.
Do not assume that a PS5 entitlement, PS4 disc, or cross-generation bundle has identical access on every account. Read the store’s edition and upgrade language before confirming a purchase.
How to install GTA Online on Xbox Series X|S
Rockstar’s Xbox upgrade instructions provide a specific digital-library route for the Series X|S version. Use it when the digital entitlement is already attached to your Xbox account.
- Open My Games and Apps on the Xbox Series X|S.
- Select Full Library.
- Choose Owned Games.
- Find Grand Theft Auto Online (Xbox Series X|S).
- Select the product and choose Install.
You can also use the Xbox website: search for Grand Theft Auto V, open the Xbox One & Xbox Series X|S listing, choose Install To, and select the destination device. Rockstar says Xbox One digital owners can download the Series X|S version through the product description page. Physical-disc owners cannot use that described digital-upgrade route, because the disc does not convert the entitlement into a standalone digital Series X|S license.

For a new purchase, open the Microsoft Store listing for GTA Online or the GTA V edition that includes it, verify the Series X|S designation, complete checkout, and install from the owned-games library. If multiple editions appear, compare the platform labels before selecting Install.

How to install GTA Online on Xbox One
Search the Microsoft Store for an Xbox One-compatible GTA V or GTA Online listing. The detailed Rockstar steps above focus on the Series X|S version, so Xbox One users should not assume every menu label or upgrade behavior is identical.
- Open the Microsoft Store on Xbox One and search for Grand Theft Auto V or GTA Online.
- Open the listing and confirm that Xbox One is included in the supported platforms.
- Buy the product or select the download option if your account already owns it.
- Open your library and start the installation on the selected console drive.
- Install updates, launch the game, and complete the requested account sign-in for online play.
If you own a physical Xbox One disc, insert it when the console requests ownership verification. A disc-based entitlement should not be treated as the same thing as a digital Series X|S upgrade.

Not always. On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, Rockstar documents a standalone GTA Online product sold through the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store. On PC, the commonly listed product combines GTA V and GTA Online, so the storefront listing determines what you purchase. On PS4 and Xbox One, select the generation-compatible listing and read whether GTA Online is included or sold separately in your region.

Rockstar also has a support article explaining how to purchase GTA V Story Mode after buying the standalone version of GTA Online. That relationship is edition-specific: owning standalone GTA Online does not automatically grant every Story Mode entitlement on every platform.
Console subscriptions and the former free trial
Rockstar’s November 11, 2025 support notice described a temporary GTA Online free trial on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S running November 11–17, 2025. That promotion has ended. After the trial, the notice said players needed the standalone version and the applicable PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass requirement returned. Subscription policies can vary by region and can change, so check the current console store page and service terms attached to your account before assuming online access is included.
GTA+ is optional. Rockstar says it is available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S through platform-specific purchase channels, but it is not required to install or play GTA Online.
Storage, downloads, and first launch
PC storage
The Steam Enhanced listing specifies 105 GB of available space and an SSD. Reserve additional room for temporary update files and future patches rather than filling the drive to its limit. Epic, Steam, and Rockstar may display different requirements for different editions or updates; use the value shown for the exact product you are installing.
Console storage
Console store pages show the current download size for the selected edition. Keep the console connected to power and a stable network during a large download, and leave free space for updates. A product that includes both current- and previous-generation versions can require more space than a single-version install.
First launch
The first launch can install or update Rockstar components, verify ownership, and request account sign-in. Do not close the launcher or console download queue while those checks are running. If Story Mode and GTA Online appear as separate tiles, select the online tile associated with the installed entitlement.
Common installation problems and fixes
The game is missing from a PC library
- Sign out and back in to the storefront account that made the purchase.
- On Epic, reset Library filters, restart the launcher, and clear its cache, as Epic recommends for a missing Enhanced entitlement.
- On Steam or Rockstar Games Launcher, confirm that the purchase is visible in the account’s order or library history.
- Check that you did not buy a different regional, platform, or generation edition.
Rockstar account or launcher errors
- Install the current Rockstar Games Launcher components when prompted.
- Verify the internet connection; PC activation and periodic entitlement verification require connectivity.
- Use the Rockstar account associated with the Steam or Epic entitlement rather than creating a second account.
- Restart the computer after a launcher update, then launch from the storefront where you own the game.
The console says you do not own the game
- Switch to the PlayStation or Xbox account that purchased or claimed the product.
- Open the library instead of searching for a similarly named product, and compare the generation label.
- For a disc copy, insert the disc and wait for ownership verification.
- For Series X|S, use My Games and Apps → Full Library → Owned Games and look specifically for Grand Theft Auto Online (Xbox Series X|S).
Online play is unavailable after installation
- Confirm that the game has finished updating.
- Check the current PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass requirement for your region and entitlement.
- Sign in to the Rockstar account requested by the game.
- Do not rely on the expired November 2025 free-trial terms as a current entitlement.

Console online-service requirements and store catalogs can change, so verify the current regional listing before paying or troubleshooting an installation.
