The safest way to update a Nothing phone is the built-in over-the-air (OTA) updater: connect to stable Wi‑Fi, open Settings > System > System Update, download the offered package, and let the phone restart and finish without interruption. Nothing recommends beginning with at least 50% battery (or leaving the phone connected to a charger) and backing up important data first. This procedure applies to the update offered to your particular phone; Nothing’s generic instructions do not establish which build or rollout is currently available for every model.
What a Nothing OS update does
A system update is software delivered for the phone’s operating system. Nothing says updates may fix software problems and can sometimes add features or optimise performance; the exact changes depend on the model and build you receive. An OTA update is downloaded and installed by the phone itself. It is different from manually flashing a firmware file with developer tools. For an ordinary update, Nothing’s documented route is the OTA screen in Settings, not a separate download site.
Because Nothing distributes software by device, an update seen in a news report or on another Nothing phone is not necessarily ready for yours. Your model, installed build and rollout status determine what the updater shows. The safest answer to “Which version should I install?” is therefore the version offered by your own phone through the system-update screen.

Prepare the phone before checking
Use a reliable Wi‑Fi connection
Join a stable Wi‑Fi network before checking for or downloading the update. Nothing’s online instructions specifically say to download an available update using Wi‑Fi. Avoid starting where the signal repeatedly drops or where a captive portal may interrupt the connection. A connection that works for ordinary browsing can still be unsuitable if it disconnects repeatedly during a large system download.
Keep the phone within dependable range of the router and avoid switching networks halfway through the download. If the network requires a sign-in page, complete that sign-in first. Do not assume that mobile data is the preferred route simply because the phone can use it for other tasks; Nothing’s documented download instruction is Wi‑Fi.
Back up important information
Nothing’s OTA installation guidance recommends backing up important data before you begin. Use the backup method you normally trust for photos, contacts, messages, authenticator data and other files that would be difficult to replace. Check that the backup has actually completed rather than merely starting it.

A routine OTA update is designed to preserve your data, but a backup protects you if the process fails or the phone later needs service. Keep any recovery codes or other information that is normally stored only on the phone available through your chosen backup method. Do not delete the backup until the phone has restarted normally and you have confirmed that your important information is present.
Have enough charge
For routine preparation, Nothing recommends a battery level of at least 50% or keeping the phone connected to a charger during the installation. A compatible charger is sufficient; Nothing does not specify a required connector, wattage or brand in this guidance. Keep the cable firmly connected if you choose to charge during the process, and place the phone where the cable will not be pulled out accidentally.
The higher 50% figure is the conservative preparation advice. Nothing’s troubleshooting article uses a separate 40% minimum when diagnosing a failed OTA attempt. Treat those as different instructions: prepare normally at 50% or on a charger, and make sure the phone is above 40% when a troubleshooting retry is blocked by its charge check.
Make room for the package
Check that the phone has adequate free storage. The update package must download completely and the installer also needs working space to unpack and apply it. Nothing’s failure guidance specifically lists insufficient storage as something to check.

If storage is nearly full, remove or move unneeded files before retrying rather than repeatedly starting a download that cannot complete. Large videos, duplicate downloads and unused apps are practical places to look, but preserve anything you have not backed up. Avoid filling the phone with new photos, recordings or app downloads while the update is waiting to install.

Record useful details if something goes wrong
Before installing, note the phone model, the current software version and any error message shown by the updater. Also note whether the failure happened while checking, downloading, installing or restarting. Those details let Nothing Support identify the device and the failed stage if you need help.
A generic guide cannot predict the rollout schedule or build offered to an individual model. Recording the displayed version prevents confusion if you later compare the phone with another device or contact support about a missing update.
How to download and install the update
1. Connect and secure the phone
- Connect the Nothing phone to stable Wi‑Fi.
- Finish your backup of important data.
- Confirm the battery is at least 50%, or connect the phone to a charger that will remain attached.
- Check that there is adequate free storage for both the download and installation.
- Close activities that could distract you during installation and keep the phone in a place where it will not be unplugged accidentally.
These checks are deliberately simple. They address the conditions Nothing identifies as important without changing system settings or installing another updater.

- Open Settings.
- Tap System.
- Tap System Update.
This is the path given in Nothing’s online upgrade instructions: How do I upgrade the software system online? The labels can vary slightly with a phone’s language or software build, but the system-update entry is the relevant destination. If you cannot find it, use Settings’ own search for “system update” instead of downloading an application that claims to update the phone.
3. Let the phone check
Wait while the phone contacts Nothing’s update service. If an update is offered, review the information shown on the screen and choose the download command. Keep the Wi‑Fi connection active until the package has finished downloading.
Do not assume that a release seen on another model will appear on yours. Update availability can differ by model and rollout stage, and the generic instructions do not give a universal current version. If the screen says there is no update, Nothing’s online guide treats that as the phone having the latest version available to it at that check.
If the updater displays an error before downloading, write down the exact wording. Do not repeatedly tap download while the network is unstable; an incomplete package can produce a later package or verification error.
4. Start installation when prompted
After the download, follow the on-screen installation prompt. The phone may ask you to install immediately or schedule the restart. Choose a time when you can leave the device alone and, if you are charging it, keep the cable connected.

Read the prompt rather than assuming that reaching 100% download means the update is already installed. Downloading obtains the package; installation applies it and normally requires a restart. Keep the phone on a stable surface during this transition.
5. Do not interrupt the upgrade
During the upgrade, do not press the power button, use the phone, disconnect its charger unnecessarily or perform other actions. Nothing’s instruction is explicit: “Don’t press the power button or perform any actions during the upgrade process, and wait for the update to be completed.”
The phone can restart and show a blank or progress screen while the installation is applied; that is not a reason to force a shutdown. Do not remove the SIM, change networks, launch apps or attempt another update check while the installation is in progress. Leave the device alone even if the screen appears unchanged for a while.

Allow the phone to restart on its own. Nothing’s OTA installation guidance says that, after the restart, the phone shows confirmation that it has been updated. Unlock it only after the normal startup screen appears, then return to Settings > System > System Update if you need to check the installed status.
Give the first startup your full attention: confirm that the phone reaches its normal home screen, that the update confirmation is visible, and that essential data is still present. If the phone has not completed the restart, continue to wait rather than forcing power off. If it eventually starts with an error, preserve that message for support.
If no update appears
Nothing’s generic online guide treats an empty update screen as an indication that the phone has the latest version available to it. That statement does not promise that every model receives the same build at the same time, nor does it establish a future rollout date.
First, verify that you selected the correct system-update screen and that the phone completed its check over Wi‑Fi. If the check itself reports a network problem, move to a stable connection and try again. If the phone reports that it is up to date, there is no need to obtain a separate file simply because another device has a newer-looking build number.
If you believe a release should be available, collect the model name, current software version, region and any message shown, then contact Nothing Support. Avoid downloading a package intended for a different model: a file for another device or build can be incompatible even when the names look similar.

What to do when an OTA update fails
Nothing’s troubleshooting guidance identifies four practical checks: network stability, free storage, battery level and interruption during the upgrade. Work through them methodically, then retry once the condition is corrected. Do not jump straight to a factory reset, bootloader unlock or firmware flash; those are not recommended in the cited OTA troubleshooting instructions.

The 40% figure in the table is a troubleshooting threshold stated by Nothing; it is not a replacement for the installation guide’s 50% recommendation. Keeping the phone charged and untouched reduces the chance of another interruption.
A practical retry sequence
- Write down the exact error and the point at which it appeared.
- Check the Wi‑Fi signal and move to a more reliable network if necessary.
- Check available storage and free space without deleting anything you have not backed up.
- Charge above 40%; for a normal retry, aim for at least 50% or keep the charger attached.
- Restart the phone if the previous attempt was interrupted.
- Return to Settings > System > System Update and try the OTA process again.
- Leave the phone untouched during installation and restart.
If the same failure remains after these checks, stop repeating the attempt and contact Nothing Customer Support. Include the model, installed software version, network conditions, available storage and the exact error.

For a routine Nothing OS update, the built-in OTA route is the only method documented in the cited online upgrade instructions. Manual installation is a different operation that may involve a model-specific package and additional recovery or developer steps. The checked Nothing Software Download page lists downloads for the Nothing X and CMF Watch apps, but it does not list a Nothing OS phone firmware package or manual phone-installation instructions on the page reviewed.

The absence of a phone firmware file on that page is not proof that Nothing never publishes a model-specific package elsewhere. It does mean you should not invent a sideloading procedure or obtain an unofficial file when the normal updater has failed. Follow Nothing’s support advice instead.

After the update finishes
Wait for the automatic restart, unlock the phone normally and look for the update confirmation. If the phone starts normally but the update screen still reports the previous state, record the displayed software version and any error text. A second attempt should follow the network, storage and charge checks above; a persistent problem belongs with Nothing Customer Support.
Check your important information after startup, especially anything you backed up before beginning. If something is missing or the phone cannot complete a normal startup, do not experiment with random firmware files.
