A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11The practical answer: download a Wikipedia ZIM archive from Kiwix, then open that archive with either Kiwix Reader or kiwix-serve. Reader is for one device; kiwix-serve runs a local HTTP website that phones, tablets and computers on your network can open in an ordinary browser. A desktop, NAS or Raspberry Pi can host it. The archive’s edition, language and file size determine your storage requirement, so check the Kiwix catalog immediately before downloading.
What you are building
An offline Wikipedia setup has two separate parts:
- Content: a Kiwix ZIM file containing a particular Wikipedia language and edition. The ZIM file is the downloadable archive; without it, the software has nothing to display.
- Access software: Kiwix Reader opens the archive on one computer or mobile device, while
kiwix-servepublishes one or more ZIM files as a website on your local network.
Kiwix describes kiwix-serve as a command-line HTTP server for sharing ZIM files over a network. Other devices do not need a Kiwix app: they browse to the host’s local IP address using a normal web browser. The default arrangement is local access, not a public website.

Choose the right Wikipedia archive before downloading
Language and edition
Open the Kiwix Library/catalog and select the Wikipedia language you need. Then choose an edition that fits the host’s available disk space. Kiwix produces Wikipedia downloads in three flavours, so two entries that look similar can have materially different storage requirements and content coverage.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Record the edition date and displayed file size before starting the transfer. Catalog values change as new snapshots are produced, and no single “Wikipedia ZIM size” applies to every language or flavour. The catalog entry, rather than an old filename quoted in a forum post, is the authoritative choice for your installation.

Plan storage for the complete file
“File size is always an issue when downloading such big content,” Kiwix notes in its FAQ. Treat the catalog size as a minimum for the archive itself. Leave additional room for a temporary download, a second edition during an upgrade, filesystem overhead and a backup if the host will store one.
- For a laptop or desktop, use a drive with more free space than the selected ZIM’s displayed size.
- For a Raspberry Pi, plan the storage separately from the board. The board, power supply and case do not automatically provide enough space for a large archive.
- For a NAS, check the share’s free space and permissions before copying the file.
- If you want several languages or flavours, add their sizes together instead of planning for only the largest individual file.
Keep the catalog metadata
Save the filename, edition date and any checksum information shown by Kiwix alongside the download. This makes it possible to identify which snapshot is installed and to verify a later copy. Do not rename files casually if you rely on scripts or a directory-based server command.
Download the ZIM file safely
- Open the Kiwix catalog. Filter for Wikipedia, select the language and choose the required flavour and edition date.
- Confirm the displayed size. Compare it with free space on the destination drive, allowing room for a temporary copy and future replacement.
- Download to durable storage. A ZIM file can be very large, so avoid a nearly full system partition or a removable device that may disconnect during the transfer.
- Retain the filename and metadata. Keep the catalog information and checksum data, when available, in the same folder or in your backup notes.
- Check the completed file. If Kiwix provides a checksum, calculate the matching checksum with your operating system and compare the results before attempting to serve the archive.
A failed or incomplete download commonly appears as a file that is smaller than the catalog’s value, an archive that Kiwix cannot open, or a server that stops while indexing it. Delete the bad copy and download it again rather than trying to repair the ZIM manually.
Kiwix Reader or Kiwix Server?
| Need | Kiwix Reader | kiwix-serve |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Read ZIM content on the device where the app is installed | Serve ZIM content as a local HTTP website |
| How another device connects | Install Reader and open the archive there | Open the host’s LAN address in a normal browser |
| Multiple archives | Opened through the Reader interface | Can serve one or many ZIM files from a command |
| Best fit | A single laptop, tablet or phone | A household, classroom, lab or field network |
| Always-on host required | No | Yes, while other devices need access |
Reader and Server are not competing archive formats. Both use the same ZIM content. If you only need Wikipedia on one laptop, Reader is the simpler choice. If several people should browse from their own devices, run kiwix-serve on a machine that stays powered on.
Pick a host: laptop, NAS, Raspberry Pi or Hotspot
Kiwix describes the server as multiplatform and lightweight, including support for Raspberry Pi Zero and NAS appliances. A Raspberry Pi 5 is a practical compact host when you want a small, dedicated computer, but the archive determines the storage purchase. Kiwix’s official Hotspot is an assembled Raspberry Pi 5 appliance containing ZIM files and described as an optimised, plug-and-play device. Confirm the current contents, edition and price before buying because those details can change.
| Host option | Upfront cost | Storage expansion | Power and portability | Maintenance | Simultaneous readers | Arrives assembled? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Laptop or desktop | Not stated; may use hardware you already own | Internal drive or attached storage, depending on the computer | Usually less portable while in use; power draw varies by computer | Install and maintain the operating system and server | Not stated by Kiwix; depends on hardware, network and archive use | No dedicated appliance is implied |
| NAS | Not stated | Designed for attached or installed storage; exact expansion depends on the NAS | Normally stationary and intended for continuous operation; power draw varies | Maintain NAS software, permissions and the server process | Not stated by Kiwix | No |
| Raspberry Pi | Not stated; board, power, case and storage may be separate | Choose storage large enough for the selected ZIM; exact expansion depends on the storage device | Compact and portable; power draw varies by model and peripherals | Maintain the Pi operating system and server | Not stated by Kiwix | No, unless purchased as part of an appliance |
| Kiwix Hotspot | Current price not stated here; verify before purchase | Contains ZIM files; current storage and included editions must be checked | Designed as a portable local-access appliance; hardware is based on Raspberry Pi 5 | Lower setup effort than assembling a host, but content and device still require care | Not stated by Kiwix | Yes; Kiwix describes it as plug-and-play |
Choose the machine that can remain available and has storage appropriate to the archive. Do not assume that a faster board compensates for insufficient disk space, and do not treat simultaneous-reader capacity as a published benchmark: Kiwix does not provide a named independent study or a universal reader limit for these options.

Install Kiwix server software
Linux package
On Linux distributions that package it, install kiwix-tools. Package names and installation commands vary by distribution, so use the distribution’s normal package manager and confirm that the installed command is available:
kiwix-serve --help
The help output confirms that the executable is installed and displays the options supported by that build. Put the ZIM files in a dedicated directory such as /data, and ensure the account launching the service can read the files.
Official container image
Docker users can use Kiwix’s documented image, ghcr.io/kiwix/kiwix-serve. Mount the host directory containing the archives into the container and publish a host port to the container’s port 8080. A representative invocation is:
docker run --rm
-v /path/to/zim:/data:ro
-p 8080:8080
ghcr.io/kiwix/kiwix-serve
/data/*.zim
Replace /path/to/zim with the real host directory. The read-only mount prevents the container from modifying the archive. Check the current Kiwix Docker README for image-specific arguments and wildcard handling before putting the command into an automated deployment; container versions and startup conventions can change.
Start a simple local server
For a native installation with archives in /data, the minimal command is:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →kiwix-serve -p 80 /data/*.zim
The -p 80 option selects HTTP port 80. The wildcard passes every matching ZIM in that directory, allowing one server process to present multiple archives. If your account cannot bind to a low-numbered port, choose an unprivileged port such as 8080 instead:

- CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
kiwix-serve -p 8080 /data/*.zim
Keep the terminal open while testing. A foreground process makes errors visible and confirms whether the files are readable. Once the test works, configure your operating system or container runtime to restart the service after a reboot; the exact service-manager steps depend on the host operating system and are not prescribed by Kiwix’s server page.
Open Wikipedia from another device
- Find the host’s LAN address. On the host, use its operating system’s network settings or address command and identify the private address on the same network as the client device.
- From a phone, tablet or computer connected to that network, open a browser.
- Enter
http://HOST-IP/when the server uses port 80. If you selected another port, include it, for examplehttp://HOST-IP:8080/. - Select the desired archive from the Kiwix page and search or browse normally.
Use the numeric LAN address first. A local hostname may work, but it depends on name-resolution settings that differ between routers and operating systems. If the page opens on the host but not on another device, the process is probably running while the network path, firewall or address is wrong.
Make the service dependable
Give the host a stable address
A DHCP reservation in the router keeps the host’s LAN address consistent without requiring a manually configured address on the machine. A static address configured on the host is another option, but it must be chosen within the network’s addressing plan. Record the address and port for users who need to connect.
Start after a reboot
Enable the server through the host operating system’s normal startup or service mechanism. Test by rebooting the host, waiting for the operating system to finish, and opening the URL from a second device. A process that only works after someone manually runs the command is not an always-available server.
Protect the archive
Keep the original ZIM and its backup separate from the running copy when practical. Back up the archive to another disk or storage system, and retain the edition date and checksum metadata. If a new edition is downloaded, stage it alongside the old one, test it, then remove the old copy only after the replacement is usable.
Check updates deliberately
Wikipedia editions are snapshots, not a live connection to Wikipedia. To update the content, download a newer catalog edition and replace the old ZIM. Because file sizes are substantial, schedule transfers when the network and storage can accommodate them, and keep the previous edition until the new file has passed its checksum and serving tests.

Security: keep the default server local
Kiwix states that kiwix-serve speaks HTTP/1.1 without SSL and recommends a reverse proxy for serious deployments. Do not expose the bare listener directly to the public internet. Anyone who can reach the port may be able to browse the archives, and unencrypted HTTP is not suitable for credentials or sensitive traffic.
Recommended Free Tools
- Keep the host on a trusted LAN or isolated local network when the purpose is offline access.
- Do not create a router port-forwarding rule for the server merely to make it reachable outside the home.
- If wider access is genuinely required, put a properly configured reverse proxy in front of Kiwix, terminate TLS there, restrict who can connect and keep the Kiwix listener off the public interface.
- Use firewall rules to allow the chosen port only from the networks that need it.
The reverse proxy recommendation is about deployment security, not a requirement for a private home test. A same-network browser connection over the host’s LAN address is the straightforward local use case.

“Command not found”
The package is missing, the executable is not on the account’s PATH, or you are using the Docker method without Docker installed. Confirm the installation with kiwix-serve --help, or run the documented container image instead.
The server starts but lists no archives
Check the directory path, filename extension and read permissions. The shell wildcard /data/*.zim must match files in the directory used by the process. With Docker, remember that /data is the container path, not necessarily the host path; verify the volume mount and inspect the container’s view of the directory.
The archive will not open
Compare the downloaded file with the catalog’s displayed size and checksum, if supplied. An interrupted transfer or damaged copy is more likely than a problem that can be fixed by changing the server command. Download a fresh copy and test it before deleting the original.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe page works on the host but not elsewhere
- Confirm that the client is on the same LAN or Wi-Fi network, not an isolated guest network.
- Use the host’s current private IP address and include the non-default port when applicable.
- Check the host firewall for the selected TCP port.
- Verify that the server is listening on an address reachable from the LAN rather than only on a loopback interface.
The browser times out during a search
Check that the host has not run out of storage or memory and that the process is still running. Large archives can make storage performance important, especially on small computers or slow removable media. Test with one known-good ZIM, then add additional archives after the basic service is stable.

Practical deployment patterns
One person, one laptop
Install Kiwix Reader and open the downloaded ZIM locally. This avoids network configuration and is appropriate when another device does not need access. Keep the archive on internal or reliably attached storage and use the catalog’s edition information to identify it.
Family, classroom or workshop network
Place the ZIM on a desktop, NAS or Raspberry Pi that can stay powered on. Run kiwix-serve, reserve the host’s LAN address, and give users the local URL. This pattern lets each person use a familiar browser without installing Reader separately.

Portable offline library
A Raspberry Pi host with appropriately sized external storage can travel with a local network, provided it has power and a way for client devices to join that network. Kiwix’s Hotspot is the assembled alternative: Kiwix describes it as a Raspberry Pi 5-based, plug-and-play device containing ZIM files. Verify the supplied editions and storage before relying on it for a particular language or date.
Several languages or collections
Store the ZIM files in one readable directory and pass them together to the server. Name and catalog each file clearly so users can distinguish language and edition. Add archives one at a time and check that the aggregate storage plan still leaves room for updates and backups.
What the setup can and cannot do
- It can: provide offline browsing of the downloaded Wikipedia snapshot to devices on the local network, using a standard browser.
- It can: serve one or many ZIM files from a single
kiwix-serveprocess. - It cannot: display articles that were not included in the selected archive edition.
- It does not: automatically update itself from live Wikipedia; new content requires a newer ZIM download.
- It is not: a secure public web service when run as the default HTTP listener without a reverse proxy and TLS.
The most important decision is therefore made before installation: select the right language, flavour and edition, and provide enough durable storage. The server command is comparatively small; the archive is the actual offline library.
Quick Recap
Final installation checklist
- Selected the Wikipedia language, flavour and edition date in the Kiwix catalog.
- Confirmed the catalog’s current size and available disk space.
- Downloaded the ZIM to durable storage and retained checksum metadata.
- Tested the archive with Kiwix Reader or the server before deleting any previous copy.
- Installed
kiwix-toolsor prepared the official Docker image. - Started
kiwix-servewith the correct directory and port. - Opened the host’s LAN URL from a second device.
- Reserved the host’s address and configured startup after reboot.
- Backed up the ZIM and kept its edition information.
- Left the service local unless a reverse proxy, TLS and access controls are properly configured.
