Twitch requires you to enable past-broadcast storage before going live; YouTube can archive streams automatically only when they stay under 12 hours; and Kick replays expire after 7 or 30 days depending on channel verification. The safest routine is to record locally while streaming, download the platform copy promptly, and place another copy on a separate drive or backup destination.
What to do before you go live
A platform replay is a convenience, not a permanent archive. Retention rules can change, accounts can be inaccessible, and a stream can fail to save because of settings or connectivity. Set up the following checks before each broadcast.

1. Turn on Twitch past-broadcast storage
Twitch says past-broadcast storage is not enabled by default. In Twitch, open Creator Dashboard → Settings → Stream, find the option to store past broadcasts, and enable it before starting the stream. After the broadcast, saved videos appear under Creator Dashboard → Content → Video Producer.

2. Keep YouTube streams under the archive limit when possible
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be archived automatically. It also warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For any long event, split the broadcast into sessions or make a local recording so a platform-side failure does not become your only copy.

3. Know Kick’s replay deadline
Kick creates a replay after a livestream ends, but the replay is temporary. The Help Center article dated May 21, 2026 lists different limits for verified and non-verified channels. Plan your download as soon as the stream finishes rather than waiting for the final day.
4. Start a local recording
Use the recording function in your streaming or encoding software at the same time as the live broadcast. A local file protects you from a missed platform archive, a retention deadline, or a later account problem. Check that the recording location has enough free space and that the file is actually growing before you begin.
Retention and download options at a glance
| Platform | When archiving happens | Published replay retention | How to obtain a copy | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Twitch | Must enable Store Past Broadcasts before streaming | 7 days for general broadcasters; 14 days for Affiliates; 60 days for Partners, Prime, and Turbo users | Video Producer menu → Download, or individual Export to a connected YouTube account | No official bulk download; audio muted by Twitch’s Audio Recognition system remains muted in the downloaded file |
| YouTube | Automatic archive is available for streams shorter than 12 hours | Retention period is not specified in the cited archive guidance | YouTube Studio owner download, or Google Takeout for all uploaded videos | A stream over 12 hours may not be captured; documented owner downloads are MP4 at 720p or 360p depending on file size |
| Kick | Replay appears after the livestream ends | Up to 30 days and 30 replays for verified channels; 7 days and 16 replays for non-verified channels | Kick’s May 22, 2026 help article describes third-party sites and a manual m3u8 playlist method | The documented methods are external; Kick does not document a built-in download control in that article |
The Twitch and Kick figures above are the limits stated in the platforms’ 2026 help articles. Recheck the relevant Help Center page if your account type or the date of your stream changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to download a Twitch VOD
Step 1: Confirm that the VOD was saved
- Open Creator Dashboard.
- Select Content → Video Producer.
- Look for the finished broadcast in the list. If it is missing, check that Store Past Broadcasts was enabled and consider whether a network interruption or incompatible configuration prevented the save.
Step 2: Download one video
- Find the VOD in Video Producer.
- Open the menu beside that video.
- Choose Download and select a local destination when your browser asks where to save it.
Download important broadcasts immediately. Twitch’s stated window is 7 days for other broadcasters, 14 days for Affiliates, and 60 days for Partners, Prime, and Turbo users. A vertical VOD version expires after 7 days; the horizontal version remains for the account’s ordinary retention period.
Step 3: Export to YouTube when that suits your workflow
- Open Twitch’s Connections settings and connect your YouTube account.
- Return to Video Producer and open the menu for the individual VOD.
- Choose Export and follow the prompts.
Export is an individual-video action, not an account-wide migration. Twitch explicitly says it does not offer bulk downloads, so a large backlog must be handled one VOD at a time. Prioritize irreplaceable events, tutorials, sponsored streams, and broadcasts approaching their expiry date.
What the Twitch file may not contain
Twitch’s Audio Recognition system can mute portions of a VOD. Twitch notes that audio muted by this system remains muted in the downloaded video. A local recording made during the broadcast is therefore the only practical way to preserve the audio you captured yourself if the platform copy is later altered.

How to save a YouTube livestream
Step 1: Stay within the automatic-archive condition
YouTube’s archive guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours can be archived automatically. It warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not treat a long uninterrupted broadcast as safely archived merely because the live player worked; record locally or divide the event into shorter sessions.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Step 2: Check the archive in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio for the channel that hosted the stream.
- Find the completed livestream in your content list.
- Open its settings to adjust visibility or delete the archive if necessary.
Make the archive private or unlisted while you verify the file, then choose the audience setting you actually want. A visibility change does not create an additional backup, so download the file before deleting or substantially editing the only copy.
Step 3: Download an uploaded video
YouTube’s owner-download instructions describe downloading an MP4 from the video’s menu. The documented download can be 720p or 360p depending on the video’s size. Those stated resolutions do not guarantee that the file is the original livestream master or that every quality variant is preserved.
Step 4: Use Google Takeout for an account-wide export
Google Takeout can download all videos uploaded to YouTube. This is the useful option when you need more than one stream and want to avoid opening each video separately. Review the export contents and keep the downloaded archive in a location that is independent of your Google account.
Why a local YouTube recording still matters
YouTube itself recommends recording a local archive as a backup. The recommendation addresses two separate risks: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured, and an owner download may not represent the original quality or every stream variant. Keep the local file until you have opened the downloaded copy and confirmed that the important picture and sound are present.

How to download a Kick replay
Understand the deadline first
Kick’s May 21, 2026 Help Center article states that verified channels can retain up to 30 days of replays and 30 replays, while non-verified channels have up to 7 days and 16 replays. These are separate limits: a channel can reach its replay-count cap before the time limit, so download older broadcasts even when they are not yet 7 or 30 days old.
Method 1: Use a third-party downloader cautiously
Kick’s May 22, 2026 download article lists external services, including Kicklet and Streams Charts, as ways to obtain a replay. Kick’s mention documents that such methods exist; it does not establish their security, availability, download quality, or continued operation. Before using one:
- Confirm that the address is the real service address and that the page uses HTTPS.
- Do not enter your Kick password, authentication codes, or recovery information into a downloader.
- Use a separate browser download location and scan the resulting file before opening it.
- Stop if the site requires an account login, browser extension, executable installer, or unusual permissions.
Method 2: Save the m3u8 playlist manually
For technically comfortable users, Kick’s article describes finding the replay’s m3u8 playlist in browser developer tools. The general process is:
- Open the replay in your browser and start playback.
- Open developer tools and inspect the network requests generated by the player.
- Filter requests for
m3u8or playlist files. - Copy the playlist URL only after confirming that it belongs to the replay you opened.
- Use a media tool that can read an HLS m3u8 playlist to save the stream segments into a local file.
Playlist URLs can expire, require temporary authorization, or change when the page reloads. If the file does not play, first obtain a fresh playlist while the replay is still available. Do not bypass account controls or download content you are not authorized to keep.
A backup system that survives platform expiry
Use the 3-copy sequence
- Record: create a local file during the live broadcast.
- Download: obtain the platform replay immediately after the stream, while it is still listed.
- Duplicate: copy the verified file to a separate drive or backup destination.
A portable external SSD is a practical local archive because it can be disconnected after copying. It is an additional copy, not a replacement for enabling platform storage or recording during the stream. A second off-device backup is useful for creators with valuable or large archives; the platform documentation does not establish a required drive capacity or endorse a particular cloud provider.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Name files so they can be found later
Use a consistent filename containing the date, platform, channel, and stream subject, such as 2026-10-16_twitch_game-name_full-stream.mp4. Keep a small text or spreadsheet index with the stream date, original URL, local filename, and whether the file has been copied to the second destination.
Verify before deleting anything
- Open the beginning, middle, and end of the downloaded file.
- Check that video and audio play together and that the duration is plausible.
- Compare the file size with what you expect from a complete broadcast; an unusually tiny file merits investigation.
- Only remove the platform replay after the local and second copies open successfully.
Choosing the right backup approach
| Approach | Automatic? | Scope | Quality caveat | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Platform replay | Depends on platform settings and limits | Usually one account’s recent streams | Subject to retention, processing, muting, and platform export limits | Quick viewing and an immediate source for a download |
| Local recording | Must be enabled in the streaming software | One file per broadcast | Depends on the recording settings and available storage | Preserving the stream as it was captured, including audio before platform processing |
| Individual download | No | One selected VOD | Twitch has no bulk option; YouTube documents 720p or 360p owner downloads depending on file size | Saving priority broadcasts quickly |
| Google Takeout | No | All videos uploaded to the YouTube account | The cited guidance does not promise original livestream masters or every quality variant | Account-wide YouTube export |
| Separate drive or off-device copy | Depends on your backup setup | Your chosen archive | Requires enough capacity and periodic verification | Protection if the platform account or primary computer is lost |
Troubleshooting common failures
The Twitch VOD is missing
- Check Video Producer rather than the public channel page.
- Confirm that Store Past Broadcasts was enabled before the stream.
- Consider unstable network conditions or an incompatible configuration.
- If the VOD never appears, use the local recording and copy it to both backup destinations.
The Twitch download has missing music or other audio
Audio Recognition muting is retained in Twitch downloads. Use your local recording if it contains the audio you are permitted to keep. Do not assume that an export to YouTube restores muted sections.
The YouTube archive is absent
Check whether the stream exceeded 12 hours. Because YouTube says a stream over that length may not be captured at all, the local recording is the recovery path. For shorter streams, wait for processing to finish and check the Studio content list before concluding that the archive failed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The Kick replay has disappeared
Check both the channel’s verification status and replay count. A non-verified channel’s 7-day window and 16-replay limit are considerably shorter than the 30-day and 30-replay limits for verified channels. If the replay has expired, a local recording or an already-created second copy is required.
A third-party Kick downloader asks for credentials
Cancel the process. Kick’s documentation of external methods is not an endorsement of their login requests. Never give a downloader your account password or one-time codes; use a public replay URL or the manual playlist approach instead.

Security and rights checks
Keep downloaded files in folders with normal operating-system permissions and scan unfamiliar downloads before opening them. Preserve only streams you have the right to store and reuse. Platform archiving guidance does not grant permission to redistribute music, footage, guests’ appearances, or other copyrighted material contained in a broadcast. If a stream includes someone else’s content, check the applicable permission before publishing a clipped or mirrored copy.
A practical schedule for every stream
- Before going live: enable Twitch storage if applicable, confirm the YouTube stream will remain under 12 hours or split it, start local recording, and check disk space.
- Immediately after ending: confirm that the replay appears, then download the Twitch or YouTube copy or obtain the Kick copy while its replay is available.
- After downloading: test the file at several points, rename it consistently, and copy it to a separate drive or off-device destination.
- Before the deadline: process any remaining Twitch VODs individually and prioritize Kick replays approaching the 7- or 30-day limit.
- After verification: change visibility, edit, or delete the platform copy only after both retained copies play correctly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I bulk-download all Twitch VODs?
No. Twitch states that it does not offer bulk downloads. Download each VOD from Video Producer or export individual VODs to a connected YouTube account.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does a YouTube download preserve my original livestream quality?
Not necessarily. The owner-download guidance specifies MP4 at 720p or 360p depending on file size and does not promise the original livestream master or every quality variant.
Is there an official one-click Kick download button?
The cited May 22, 2026 Kick article describes third-party sites and an m3u8 discovery method rather than documenting a built-in download control.
What is the safest copy to keep if a platform replay expires?
Keep a local recording made during the stream and a second copy on a separate drive or backup destination. A platform replay should be treated as a temporary working copy.
