Choose how you want to keep your photos and videos

Facebook describes both options in its information tools. A transfer is a separate route from downloading a copy to your device.

How to download Facebook photos and videos
- Open Accounts Center and look under its information and permissions settings for Download your information. Menu labels and locations can vary; follow the current prompts shown in your account.
- Choose whether to download all available information or select specific categories. For a media-only backup, choose the relevant photo, video, or other content categories offered in the interface.
- Set the date range you want. Check it carefully so the request covers the period you intend to save.
- Review the selections and submit the download request using the on-screen instructions.
- When you receive and save the export, put it somewhere you can find again. If using external storage, check the export’s actual size before choosing a drive.
Facebook’s help information confirms that users can choose all categories or selected categories and date ranges, but the exact category names and current button-by-button sequence may differ in the live interface. Follow the controls displayed to you rather than relying on an outdated walkthrough.

How to transfer a copy to another service
If your goal is to move content directly to another service, use the separate transfer-a-copy option in Accounts Center rather than the device-download path. Facebook says the tool can transfer photos, videos, posts, or other information; choose the content and destination offered in your current interface.

Destination availability is not fixed by historical announcements. Meta announced Dropbox and Koofr as additional photo and video destinations in September 2020, and in April 2021 listed Backblaze, Dropbox, Google Photos, and Koofr as then-supported options. Those announcements document availability at those times, not a current guarantee for every account or region. See Meta’s September 2020 announcement and April 2021 announcement.
Back up before deleting your Facebook account
If you plan to permanently delete your account, request and save the information you want to retain first. Facebook recommends downloading a copy before deletion and warns that content you added cannot be retrieved after the account is deleted. Follow Facebook’s account deletion guidance and do not treat a pending request or transfer as a saved backup until you have confirmed you can access the copy.

Make the copy useful as a backup
- Choose a date range that matches what you need to preserve, rather than assuming a partial export includes your entire history.
- Keep the downloaded copy in a location you can access later. A computer or optional external drive can serve as local storage; there is no single drive capacity that suits every account.
- If relying on a service-to-service transfer, verify that the destination you want appears in your current picker and that the copy arrives there.
