The quickest way to download one webpage is your browser’s built-in Save Page command. Choose a complete/resource option when you need pictures, stylesheets and other files that make the page render; choose HTML-only when a single markup file is enough. If you want one portable file, a SingleFile-style extension can package resources into one HTML document. For repeatable automation, GNU Wget can fetch one page and its requisites without crawling the rest of the site.
“Entire webpage” normally means the page currently open plus the assets required to display it. It does not mean every page linked from that page; downloading a whole website is a separate, broader crawl.
Choose the right kind of offline copy
| Goal | Best method | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Read one page offline with minimal setup | Browser complete-page save | An HTML file plus a companion folder containing images and other requisites |
| Keep only markup and text | Browser HTML-only save | One HTML file; pictures and other assets are generally omitted |
| Carry one file | SingleFile browser extension | One HTML archive containing captured resources where the site permits it |
| Automate downloads or run them in scripts | GNU Wget | A local page and referenced resources, with optional link conversion for offline viewing |
| Produce a visual screenshot or PDF rather than editable HTML | ScreenshotNeo | PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF returned by an API request |
Any local copy can differ from the live page. Login sessions, server-side searches, video streams, forms, maps, ads, analytics and other network-dependent features may stop working offline. Treat the result as an offline reference, not a guaranteed functional clone.
Save a complete webpage in Firefox
- Open the page you want to keep.
- Open the Firefox menu and select Save Page As.
- Choose a filename and destination.
- In the format selector, choose Web page, complete.
- Save the file, then keep the generated companion folder beside it when moving or sharing the copy.
Firefox’s complete option saves the page together with pictures and other files needed for display. Mozilla notes that the original HTML link structure may not be preserved exactly. The same dialog’s Web page, HTML only option stores the original page without pictures and preserves the HTML link structure in one file. A text-file option keeps readable text rather than the original markup relationships.

When to select HTML only
Use HTML-only when you need searchable source text, a lightweight archival note or a page whose images are irrelevant. Missing images in this mode are expected, not an error.
Download a page for offline reading in Chrome
- Open the target page in Chrome.
- Use Chrome’s page menu and choose the command to download or save the page for offline reading.
- Select a location if Chrome asks for one, then open the saved result with your default browser.
Chrome’s labels and exact placement can vary by operating system and browser release. If your menu looks different, use the current Chrome Help instructions for your version. Before closing the original tab, open the saved copy once and check that the text, images and layout you need are present.
Save the page as one HTML file
The SingleFile project provides extensions for Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. It captures a page and attempts to embed resources such as images, stylesheets, fonts and frames into one HTML file. That makes the result convenient to email, archive or store in a document system without a separate asset directory.
- Install SingleFile from the browser’s official extension store or the project’s own distribution page.
- Load the complete page and wait for images or other lazy-loaded content to appear.
- Activate SingleFile and let it finish processing.
- Save the generated HTML file, then open it locally to inspect the result.
Packaging is not a promise that every dynamic element will reproduce. A site can require JavaScript calls, authentication, cross-origin resources or a live server after the file is saved. If an interactive panel is important, preserve the original URL and consider a PDF or screenshot as a second record.

Use GNU Wget from the command line
GNU Wget 1.25.0 can download one HTML page and the files it references without enabling recursive crawling. It parses common HTML and CSS references, including href, src and CSS url() values. The following command keeps the scope to one starting page and converts downloaded links to local paths:
wget --page-requisites --convert-links --adjust-extension https://example.com/article
Wget writes the page and its requisites into the current directory. Open the resulting HTML file in a browser and verify it before moving the directory. The conversion step is what makes many links point at local files instead of the original URLs.
Keep Wget from becoming a site crawler
Do not add recursive options such as -r or a high depth unless you intentionally want a broader crawl. Recursive mode follows links beyond the current page and can retrieve far more content than expected. A single-page command still depends on the site’s responses: authentication walls, robots policies, generated content and unusual JavaScript loaders can prevent assets from being fetched.
Useful Wget variations
- Choose a destination directory: add
-P saved-pageso the downloaded files are grouped in a named folder. - Inspect the transfer: leave Wget’s normal output enabled; it reports requested URLs and failures.
- Retry a transient failure: run the same command again. Already downloaded files can often be reused, while failed resources are requested again.
- Preserve a private page: supply the authentication mechanism the site requires, such as a cookie file or header, only when you are authorized to access that content.
What “entire” does—and does not—include
- Included when available: the current HTML document and referenced images, stylesheets, fonts, scripts or frames that the selected method can retrieve.
- Usually not included: pages reached through ordinary links, server databases, content loaded only after an API call, streaming media, browser extensions and data behind a login you did not provide.
- Potentially changed: relative links, generated IDs, scripts that expect a particular origin, and layout that depends on live network requests.
Downloading one page is therefore different from mirroring a website. A site-wide mirror needs deliberate scope, storage planning and permission from the owner; it is not the normal meaning of “save this webpage.”

Or skip the browser setup
If you need a visual capture rather than a local HTML package, ScreenshotNeo returns a clean PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from one request. Its API accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled.
For a basic capture, create an API key and run:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for authentication, output types and parameters.
Python
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com"},
timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`HTTP ${res.status}`);
const data = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
require('fs').writeFileSync('shot.webp', data);
ScreenshotNeo bills only clean shots. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
Controls for production captures
Beyond a basic URL, ScreenshotNeo supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded; CSS-selector element capture; dark mode; 12 device presets or any viewport; retina scale; PDF paper size, margins, landscape mode and page ranges; HTML/CSS-to-image; custom CSS and JavaScript; pre-capture clicks; hidden selectors; waits for a selector, delay or network idle; ad, tracker, request and resource-type blocking; custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization; timezone and geolocation; transparent backgrounds; image resizing; configurable-TTL caching; signed links for public <img> tags; asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks; bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call; a usage API; and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.
Plans include 1,000 shots per month free with no card, then Starter at $5 for 3,000, Growth at $15 for 15,000, Pro at $39 for 60,000, Scale at $99 for 250,000 and Business at $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to get the 1,000 monthly shots without entering a card.

Troubleshoot a missing or broken offline copy
Images or styling are missing
Check the save format first. HTML-only intentionally omits pictures. In Firefox, repeat the save with Web page, complete and keep its companion folder beside the HTML file. For Wget, confirm that the page actually references the assets in HTML or CSS and review the command output for failed requests.
The file opens as plain text or shows a blank page
Open the HTML file in a browser, not a word processor. If the browser still shows a blank result, the page may depend on scripts that require a live origin, a login or an API response. Try the browser’s complete save, SingleFile, or a visual PDF/screenshot instead.
Links point back to the internet
That can be normal. Complete browser saves may not preserve the original link structure, and Wget only rewrites links when --convert-links is used. Links to pages you did not download cannot work offline.
Wget downloads too much
Remove recursive flags such as -r and depth settings. Use only --page-requisites with the target URL for a one-page job, and write to a dedicated directory so unrelated files are easy to identify.
Best Value
- Plug-and-play expandability
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
A consent dialog or popup obscures the capture
For a browser save, dismiss the dialog before saving and wait for the page to settle. For an automated visual capture, ScreenshotNeo handles known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the shot; you can also hide selectors or run custom JavaScript.
The page requires authentication
Save it only when you are authorized. Browser methods can use your active session; command-line tools require the appropriate cookie or header. Never place credentials directly in shell history or a shared script. ScreenshotNeo supports custom cookies, headers and Authorization for permitted protected pages.
Checklist before you archive the file
- Open the saved copy with networking disabled or in airplane mode.
- Confirm the required images, fonts and styles are present.
- Keep a complete-save asset folder with its HTML file.
- Record the original URL and capture date beside the local copy.
- Test any links, forms or media that your workflow depends on; assume server-dependent features need the live site.
- Respect copyright, terms of use, privacy rules and access controls when storing or redistributing a page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download every page linked from a webpage with the browser’s Save command?
No. Save Page captures the current document and resources needed to render it. Following linked pages requires a separate, deliberately scoped crawl.
Which format is easiest to share with someone who does not have the original asset folder?
A one-file HTML archive made with a SingleFile-style extension is usually the most convenient, although dynamic content may still require the live site.
Should I choose HTML, PDF or an image for a long-term record?
Choose HTML when you need selectable source content, PDF when pagination and print layout matter, and an image when a fixed visual snapshot is the priority.
