The API exposes several named variants, but the largest variant is not guaranteed to exist for every video.
You need the video ID and either an API key or an OAuth token. Saving the thumbnail image is separate from downloading the video itself, and having access to an image does not automatically give you permission to republish it.
What you are downloading
A thumbnail is a still image associated with a video resource. The YouTube Data API returns available thumbnail objects in snippet.thumbnails. Each object can include an image URL and, sometimes, its width and height.
The documented variant names are:
| Variant | Nominal dimensions | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
default |
120 × 90 | May be absent or have different returned metadata. |
medium |
320 × 180 | Availability depends on the video resource. |
high |
480 × 360 | Use the dimensions in the response rather than assuming them. |
standard |
640 × 480 | Not returned for every video. |
maxres |
1280 × 720 | This is a documented variant, not a guarantee that every video has it. |
Some responses omit width or height even when they include a URL. Treat the returned URL as authoritative and select the highest available object instead of assuming that maxres exists.

Step 1: Find the YouTube video ID
The ID is the value passed to the API’s id parameter. For a normal watch link such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbCdEf12345, it is the value after v= and before any additional parameter.
- Short link: in
https://youtu.be/AbCdEf12345, the path segment is the ID. - Shorts: in
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/AbCdEf12345, the segment after/shorts/is the ID. - Embed: in
https://www.youtube.com/embed/AbCdEf12345, the segment after/embed/is the ID. - Extra parameters: discard everything after the ID, such as
&t=30sor&list=....
Video IDs are case-sensitive. Copying one character incorrectly produces an empty result or a “video not found” response.
Step 2: Call the official API
Create or select a Google Cloud project, enable the YouTube Data API, and create credentials. The API reference requires an API key or an OAuth token for requests. An API key is normally sufficient when you are only reading a public video resource; OAuth is used when an authenticated account is required.
cURL request
curl "https://www.googleapis.com/youtube/v3/videos?part=snippet&id=VIDEO_ID&key=API_KEY"
Replace VIDEO_ID and API_KEY. A successful response contains an items array. The first item’s snippet.thumbnails object contains the available image variants.
Python request
import requests
video_id = "VIDEO_ID"
api_key = "API_KEY"
response = requests.get(
"https://www.googleapis.com/youtube/v3/videos",
params={"part": "snippet", "id": video_id, "key": api_key},
timeout=30,
)
response.raise_for_status()
resource = response.json()
items = resource.get("items", [])
if not items:
raise RuntimeError("No video resource returned; check the ID and permissions.")
thumbnails = items[0]["snippet"].get("thumbnails", {})
for name, image in thumbnails.items():
print(name, image.get("width"), image.get("height"), image["url"])
Node.js request
const videoId = 'VIDEO_ID';
const apiKey = 'API_KEY';
const query = new URLSearchParams({
part: 'snippet',
id: videoId,
key: apiKey
});
const response = await fetch(`https://www.googleapis.com/youtube/v3/videos?${query}`);
if (!response.ok) throw new Error(`YouTube API returned ${response.status}`);
const data = await response.json();
const item = data.items?.[0];
if (!item) throw new Error('No video resource returned; check the ID and permissions.');
for (const [name, image] of Object.entries(item.snippet.thumbnails ?? {})) {
console.log(name, image.width, image.height, image.url);
}
Keep the key on the server or in an environment variable. Do not put unrestricted credentials in a public web page or commit them to a repository. Google can apply project quotas and credential restrictions; follow the limits and security settings shown in your Cloud project.
Step 3: Open and save the image
- Choose one of the URLs printed by your script. Prefer the largest available image whose dimensions meet your needs.
- Paste that URL into a browser address bar. You should see the image by itself.
- Right-click (or use the equivalent menu on a phone) and choose Save image as or Download image.
- Choose a filename and format. The browser is simply saving an image URL; this is not a separate YouTube video-download function.
If you need a specific format, open the downloaded file in an image editor and export it as PNG, JPEG or WebP. Re-encoding cannot create detail that was not present in the returned thumbnail.

Choosing the right variant
Use the actual response rather than a guessed “full-size” URL. A video can expose default, medium, high, standard, maxres, or only a subset. Select the available object with the greatest pixel area, or select a named size when your layout has a fixed requirement.
A larger image is not necessarily a better crop for every use. Check whether your design expects a 16:9 frame, a 4:3 frame, or a vertical presentation. The API’s width and height fields, when present, let you validate the aspect ratio before downloading.

If you own the video
YouTube Studio lets a signed-in creator manage or upload a custom thumbnail. That workflow is for setting a thumbnail on your own video; it is not documented as a general export tool for downloading another video’s existing thumbnail.
For a new custom thumbnail, YouTube’s help guidance recommends a 16:9 image in JPG or PNG, with a recommended 3840 × 2160 canvas and a minimum width of 640 pixels. The retrieved desktop upload limit is 50 MB and the mobile limit is 2 MB. These are creation and upload requirements, not promises about the resolution of an already-published thumbnail. Vertical videos can appear with an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on some mobile surfaces even when a 16:9 custom image is supplied.
Thumbnail image versus video download
Downloading a still image does not download the underlying video. YouTube’s creator download features through Studio or Takeout apply to videos uploaded by the signed-in account; they do not provide a general way to download somebody else’s video. Treat tools that claim to bypass those limits separately from this thumbnail-saving procedure.
Copyright and permitted reuse
A publicly visible image is not automatically free to republish. YouTube explains that an original work such as a video is usually protected by copyright as soon as its creator makes it. Before using a thumbnail in an article, advertisement, presentation, app or social post, check the creator’s license or obtain permission.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Permission: ask the rights holder for permission that covers your intended use and territory.
- Creative Commons: verify the exact license and follow its attribution and other conditions.
- Public domain: confirm that the work really is public domain where you will use it.
- Copyright exceptions: fair use and similar exceptions depend on the facts and jurisdiction; public availability alone is not enough.
YouTube cannot grant you rights to another creator’s work. Keep a record of the license or permission associated with the image you publish.
Or skip the browser setup
If you already have the thumbnail URL from the API response, ScreenshotNeo can fetch that URL and return an image without setting up browser automation. Replace VIDEO_ID below with the ID and, when necessary, substitute the exact URL returned by the API for the example image URL.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request parameters and response headers.

Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/hqdefault.jpg' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`ScreenshotNeo returned ${res.status}`);
const image = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', image));
ScreenshotNeo is useful when the source page needs browser rendering: it can accept cookie or consent banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets. You can turn each cleanup step off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

“API key not valid” or “forbidden”
Confirm that the key belongs to the Cloud project where the YouTube Data API is enabled. Check HTTP referrer, IP or application restrictions, and make sure you did not paste surrounding spaces. Use OAuth when the operation requires an authenticated account.

The response has an empty items array
Check the video ID character by character. The video may be deleted, private, age-restricted to an account you are not authenticating, or unavailable in your region. A URL copied from a playlist or timestamp is not necessarily the video ID.
The requested maxres image returns an error
Do not construct a URL by guessing a filename. Select a URL actually returned under snippet.thumbnails; some videos do not publish that variant.
The image looks soft or oddly cropped
Inspect the returned width, height and aspect ratio. Choose another available variant, and remember that enlarging a smaller source cannot restore detail. If the crop is wrong for your layout, obtain permission to create a separate design rather than altering the creator’s image without authorization.
The browser downloads an HTML error page
Open the returned URL directly and inspect the HTTP response. A stale, copied URL may have expired or been malformed. Request the video resource again and use the newly returned URL. With ScreenshotNeo, check X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed to distinguish a failed load from a successful capture.
Your script exposes the API key
Move the key to an environment variable, rotate any key that was committed publicly, and add application restrictions in Google Cloud. A client-side application should call your own backend rather than shipping an unrestricted key.
FAQ
Can I download a thumbnail without an API key?
The documented YouTube Data API route requires an API key or OAuth token. Other browser techniques are unofficial and can change, so they should not be treated as a stable or endorsed interface.
Is “full-size thumbnail” guaranteed?
No. The API documents a maxres variant with a nominal 1280 × 720 size, but availability varies by video. Use the largest URL that the response actually provides.
Can I use a downloaded thumbnail commercially?
Only if your use is covered by permission, an applicable license, public-domain status or a copyright exception in your jurisdiction. Saving the file does not transfer copyright.
