Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →You can download a YouTube thumbnail without downloading the video. Extract the video’s ID from its link, place that ID in a thumbnail URL such as https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg, open the resulting image, and save it. Because not every upload has every size—especially maxresdefault.jpg—try the fallback filenames in this guide or use the YouTube Data API to select an available image programmatically.
Fastest method: turn the video URL into an image URL
- Copy the YouTube link.
- Extract its video ID.
- Replace
VIDEO_IDinhttps://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpgwith that ID. - Open the completed image URL in a browser.
- Right-click (or press and hold on a phone) and choose Save image as, Download image, or the equivalent command.
For example, if the ID is dQw4w9WgXcQ, the large-thumbnail URL is https://img.youtube.com/vi/dQw4w9WgXcQ/maxresdefault.jpg. The alternative host i.ytimg.com can be used with the same path: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/dQw4w9WgXcQ/maxresdefault.jpg.
Find the video ID in each kind of YouTube URL
Standard watch links
In https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID, the ID is the value after v=. Stop at the next ampersand, which starts another parameter. Thus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ&list=PL123 still uses dQw4w9WgXcQ.
Short youtu.be links
In https://youtu.be/VIDEO_ID, the ID follows youtu.be/. If the link has a query string such as ?si=..., remove everything from the question mark onward before building the image URL.

Shorts links
For https://www.youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID, the ID is the path segment after /shorts/. Use that segment in the same /vi/VIDEO_ID/... template.
Embed links
For https://www.youtube.com/embed/VIDEO_ID, take the segment after /embed/. Remove any following query string.
Links copied with extra parameters
Tracking, playlist, start-time, and other parameters do not belong in the thumbnail path. Keep only the eleven-character video ID (normally a mix of letters, numbers, hyphens, and underscores), then URL-encode it only if your own parser requires that step.
Thumbnail filenames and expected sizes
YouTube exposes several practical filename variants through the image hosts. Start with maxresdefault.jpg when you need the largest standard 16:9 image, but treat it as optional: YouTube says the max-resolution size is available for only some videos, and dimensions can vary by resource and upload.
| Filename | Typical or intended use | Documented typical dimensions | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
maxresdefault.jpg |
Largest standard video thumbnail | Up to 1280×720 (maxres) |
Only some videos |
sddefault.jpg |
Standard-size fallback | Often around the standard tier; exact dimensions vary | Not guaranteed |
hqdefault.jpg |
High-quality fallback | Typically 480×360 (high) |
Common, but check the response |
mqdefault.jpg |
Medium fallback | Typically 320×180 (medium) |
Common, but check the response |
default.jpg |
Smallest standard thumbnail | Typically 120×90 (default) |
Common, but check the response |
0.jpg, 1.jpg, 2.jpg, 3.jpg |
Generated video-frame variants | Varies | Depends on the video |
The YouTube Data API names its available sizes default, medium, high, standard, and maxres. Its video resource can return a URL, width, and height for each size that exists. The typical dimensions documented for those fields are 120×90, 320×180, 480×360, 640×480, and 1280×720 respectively; an individual upload may differ.
What to do when maxresdefault.jpg fails
- Try
sddefault.jpg. - Try
hqdefault.jpg. - Try
mqdefault.jpg. - Use
default.jpgas the most broadly available fallback.
A missing or unexpected max-resolution file does not necessarily mean the video has no thumbnail. It usually means that variant was not generated or is not exposed for that upload. If you need the largest image that actually exists rather than a fixed filename, query the video’s snippet.thumbnails object through the YouTube Data API and choose the returned entry with the greatest width (and then height as a tie-breaker).
Download from a browser on desktop or phone
Desktop
Paste the completed image URL into a new tab. Wait for the image itself to load, not the YouTube watch page. Use the browser’s image-save command and keep the original .jpg extension unless you have a reason to convert it.
Android and iPhone
Open the image URL in the browser, press and hold the image, and select the download or save-image action. If the browser opens a preview instead, use its share or download control. Saving the direct image URL avoids accidentally saving a screenshot of browser chrome.

Open the downloaded file in an image viewer and inspect its pixel dimensions. A file that is only 120×90 is the default variant, even if the URL you first tried contained a larger filename. Also check that the file is a JPEG rather than an HTML error page renamed with a .jpg extension.
Automate selection with the YouTube Data API
A fixed URL is ideal for a one-off download. For a batch job, the API is safer because it reports which variants are present together with their URLs and dimensions. Request the video’s resource, read snippet.thumbnails, filter out missing entries, and select the largest returned width. Store both the chosen URL and its reported dimensions so later processing does not assume that every image is 1280×720.
- Use a fixed template when simplicity and zero API setup matter.
- Use the API when you need reliable size selection, metadata, or many videos.
- Keep the ID separate from the downloaded filename so query parameters and playlist IDs cannot contaminate your path.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo can capture the thumbnail URL (or a YouTube page) with one request. It accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Every feature is on every plan.
Use the API base and parameter names shown in the ScreenshotNeo documentation:
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Replace VIDEO_ID with the extracted ID and check the response headers before treating the result as successful. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Common problems and fixes
The URL shows a broken image or an error page
Check that you removed v=, the slash, and all query parameters from the ID. Then try hqdefault.jpg or default.jpg. A private, removed, or not-yet-processed video can also lack a retrievable image.
The image is smaller than expected
The requested variant may not exist, or the upload may have a different native size. Try the fallback sequence and inspect actual pixel dimensions. Do not assume that the maxres label guarantees 1280×720 for every resource.
A playlist link gives the wrong thumbnail
Use the video ID after v=, not the value after list=. Playlist IDs identify collections, not individual videos.
A Shorts or embed link does not work
Extract the path segment after /shorts/ or /embed/, remove the query string, and rebuild the /vi/VIDEO_ID/VARIANT.jpg path.
Your script downloads HTML instead of an image
Check the HTTP status and the response Content-Type before writing the file. Save only a response identified as an image, and log the final URL so redirects or malformed IDs are visible.
The API returns no maxres entry
That is an availability condition, not necessarily an API failure. Select the largest entry actually returned in snippet.thumbnails and retain its width and height.
Rank #4
Performance, reliability, and cost choices
- One image: construct the direct URL manually; it requires no API key and is fastest.
- Many images: parse IDs consistently, request API metadata when exact availability matters, and cache downloaded files keyed by video ID and variant.
- Large workflows: validate status, content type, and dimensions; retry transient network failures with a limit rather than looping forever.
- Rendered-page captures: use ScreenshotNeo when you need a clean visual capture rather than the raw thumbnail file, or when an AI agent should perform the capture through MCP.
Downloading is not permission to republish
Obtaining the JPEG and having the right to publish it are separate questions. Before placing a thumbnail on your site, in advertising, or in a product, obtain the creator’s permission or confirm a license or another lawful reuse basis. YouTube’s thumbnail policy also prohibits certain material and misleading presentation; violations can lead to removal, strikes, or termination. Keep a record of the permission or license that covers your intended use.
Which method should you choose?
| Method | Simplicity | Control over an actually available size | Automation | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Direct img.youtube.com or i.ytimg.com URL |
Highest | Limited; requires fallbacks | Basic | Occasional downloads |
| YouTube Data API | Lower; requires API setup | High; returns URL and dimensions | High | Batch jobs and size-aware code |
| ScreenshotNeo capture | One HTTP request | Capture-oriented rather than thumbnail metadata | High, including MCP agents | Clean rendered captures and agent workflows |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download a thumbnail without downloading the YouTube video?
Yes. The thumbnail is a separate image resource; build its image URL from the video’s ID and save that file.
What is the maxresdefault thumbnail URL?
Use https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg, replacing VIDEO_ID with the video’s ID. It is available for only some videos.
Are thumbnail URLs permanent?
Treat them as retrievable resource URLs, not as a guarantee of permanent availability. A video can be removed, made private, or have its available variants changed.
Can I use a downloaded thumbnail commercially?
Only when you have permission, an applicable license, or another lawful basis. Download access alone does not grant republication rights.
