Firefox can save the page you are viewing, including its pictures and other local resources, but it cannot download an entire website by following every link. Use Save Page As for a page copy, save additional pages one at a time, or use an authorized archiving/export method when you need a multi-page offline mirror.
What Firefox can download
“Download a website” can mean three different jobs:
- One page with its assets: the page currently open, plus files such as images and stylesheets that Firefox can save locally.
- Several chosen pages: repeat the save operation for each page you need.
- A complete site archive: crawl linked pages, rewrite navigation, and preserve a larger offline structure. Firefox’s built-in command does not do this.
The procedure below handles the first job. Treat the third as a separate archiving project, and copy only material you are authorized to download.
Save the page you are viewing
- Open the exact page in Firefox and wait for the content you need to finish loading.
- Open the Firefox menu and choose Save Page As. The menu location and wording can vary slightly by Firefox version and operating system; the command is also available through the page context menu in many desktop versions.
- Choose a folder and a file name.
- In the file-type selector, choose Web page, complete when you want a local copy with supporting resources.
- Click Save and wait for the download to finish.
Firefox creates an HTML file and, for the Complete format, a companion directory containing pictures and other files needed to display the page. Keep the directory beside the HTML file. If you rename or move one, move the other with it; separating them commonly produces missing images, styles, or scripts.

Open and verify the saved copy
- Double-click the saved HTML file, or use Firefox’s File → Open File command.
- Check the headings, images, links, fonts, and any tables or downloads you care about.
- Disconnect from the internet (or use an offline test environment) and open the file again.
A page that looks correct online may still depend on live scripts, APIs, login sessions, advertising networks, web fonts, video hosts, or other server resources. A local file can therefore look different or lose interactive behavior. For important material, keep the Complete-format copy and also export a static PDF or take a screenshot when that representation is acceptable.
Choose the right Save Page As format
| Format | What is saved | Best use | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Web page, complete | HTML plus a companion folder of pictures and supporting files | Offline reading with the closest practical visual copy | May not preserve the original HTML link structure; scripts and external services may still fail |
| Web page, HTML only | The original page in one HTML file | Keeping markup and links in a portable single file | Pictures and other supporting resources are omitted |
| Text files | Readable text | Notes, search, or archival text extraction | Presentation and the original link structure are not retained |
| All files | Equivalent to HTML-only saving, with an option to specify a file extension | When you need to control the extension | Does not turn the save into a complete asset bundle |
Mozilla’s help guidance describes Complete as allowing you to view a page “as originally shown with pictures,” while warning that it may not keep the original HTML link structure. That is the key distinction: Complete favors local appearance, whereas HTML-only favors a compact copy of the document itself.
Save several pages from the same site
Firefox does not turn a page save into a crawler. To keep a small, deliberately selected set of pages:
- Create a folder for the project, with subfolders such as
01-home,02-guide, and03-contact. - Open one target URL at a time.
- Use Save Page As → Web page, complete.
- Record the original URL and save date in a text file or spreadsheet.
- Repeat for every page you are permitted to copy.
- Open representative files without a network connection before relying on the collection.
Links inside the saved pages may still point to the live website, and they may not navigate cleanly between your local files. If you need a browsable archive with rewritten links, asset deduplication, scheduling, or hundreds of URLs, use a maintained offline-archive tool or an authorized site export/backup process instead of pretending that Firefox’s page command provides those functions.

JavaScript and server calls
Modern pages often build their visible content after load, then fetch data from an API. Save Page As may capture the initial document but not the data returned later. A local file can show an empty panel, stale content, or an error when the API is unavailable.
Authentication and private content
Cookies and login tokens are not a portable substitute for permission. A saved HTML file may omit private data, while copying and redistributing it may violate the site’s terms or someone’s privacy. Store sensitive captures securely and obtain authorization.
Cross-origin and file restrictions
Browsers apply different security rules to file:// documents than to pages served by a web server. A script that works at an HTTPS URL can fail when opened directly from disk. Do not “fix” this by disabling browser security globally. If you own the material, test it through a local server or use a static export designed for offline use.
Media, fonts, and embedded viewers
Streaming video, maps, third-party fonts, document viewers, and embedded social posts frequently require a network connection or a separate download. A screenshot or PDF can preserve the visible state, but neither guarantees that the underlying media remains playable.

There is no built-in Firefox switch that recursively follows every link and produces a complete offline website. Decide the scope before selecting a tool:
- Scope control: which hostnames, paths, file types, and maximum depth are allowed?
- Navigation: must links be rewritten to local files, or is a folder of independent captures enough?
- Dynamic support: does the archive need content rendered by JavaScript, authenticated sessions, or form states?
- Maintenance: is the archiving software actively maintained for your operating system and current web standards?
- Permission: do you own the site or have explicit authorization to copy it?
For a site you control, a CMS export, backup, static-site build, or server-side snapshot is usually more complete than downloading what a browser happens to render. For a third-party site, ask the owner for an export or follow its published download terms.
Or skip the browser setup
If your real goal is a clean image or PDF of a URL rather than a recursive offline archive, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API. One request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, while options cover full-page capture, lazy-loaded images, a CSS-selected element, dark mode, device and viewport settings, retina scale, PDF paper and page ranges, custom CSS or JavaScript, clicks, hidden selectors, selector or network-idle waits, blocked ads and trackers, custom headers/cookies/user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify a migration.
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed.
Use the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and option details. The following examples use the supplied endpoint and save the response locally.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`HTTP ${res.status}`);
const data = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', data));
ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is included on every plan. Troubleshooting Firefox saves
The saved file opens as a blank page
Confirm that you opened the HTML file rather than a missing companion resource. Re-save after the page finishes loading, and try Complete instead of HTML-only. If the page is application-driven, capture a PDF or screenshot of the rendered state as a separate record.
Images or styles are missing
Put the companion resource directory beside the HTML file and preserve its generated name. Moving only the HTML file breaks relative paths. Re-save if resources were still loading when you started.
The page works online but not from disk
Check for API calls, login requirements, file-origin restrictions, and third-party embeds. Test through an appropriate local server for material you own, or use a static export. Do not disable browser security to make an untrusted page run.
Links lead back to the internet
That is expected for many saves. Firefox saves the current document; it does not automatically download every destination. Save each required page separately or create a properly scoped archive.
The file is too large or takes a long time
Complete format can include many high-resolution assets. Save only the pages and resources you need, use HTML-only or text for lightweight notes, and remove duplicate project copies after verifying them.
Practical checklist
- Define whether you need one page, selected pages, or a recursive archive.
- For one-page offline reading, choose Web page, complete.
- Keep the HTML file and its companion directory together.
- Test important files with the network disconnected.
- Expect interactive, authenticated, and externally hosted features to differ offline.
- Use an authorized export or maintained archiving workflow for a whole site.
- Use a screenshot or PDF when a fixed visual record is more useful than editable HTML.
FAQ
Can Firefox download every page linked from a website?
No. Save Page As handles the page currently open. Following links and building a multi-page mirror requires a separate archiving workflow.
Which format should I choose for pictures?
Choose Web page, complete. It stores pictures and supporting files in a companion directory; HTML-only deliberately omits those resources.
Can I email the saved HTML file by itself?
Only if you used a format that does not depend on a resource directory. A Complete-format save normally needs both the HTML file and its companion folder.
Will a saved page preserve a login or interactive form?
Not reliably. Authentication, scripts, APIs, and live services can require the original website. Save sensitive material only with permission and verify the offline result.
Is a screenshot the same as downloading a website?
No. A screenshot or PDF is a fixed visual record of a rendered state; it is not a navigable copy of the site’s pages and code.
