To save one webpage for offline reading in desktop Chrome, open it, select More (⋮) → Cast, save, and share → Save page as…, choose a folder, and select Save. Open the saved file later from your computer. On Android, tap More → Download, then open the page from Chrome’s Downloads list.
Chrome must be connected to the internet while it creates the copy. The resulting file is a snapshot of the page you viewed—not a guaranteed offline copy of every page on the website or every interactive feature.
Save a webpage for offline use on desktop Chrome
- Connect your computer to the internet and open the page you want to keep.
- Select More (the three-dot menu) in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Cast, save, and share, then select Save page as….
- Pick a folder and, if needed, change the filename or file type.
- Select Save. Chrome downloads the local copy and its associated resources.
Google’s Chrome Help instructions state, “You must be online to save a page.” If you try while disconnected, reconnect and repeat the procedure.
Open or remove the saved page
When you are offline, open the saved file from your computer’s file manager. Chrome loads the local copy in a tab. To remove it, delete the saved file (and any companion resource folder) from the folder where you stored it.

Choose a useful storage location
Create a folder such as Offline pages in Documents so saved files are easy to find and back up. Use descriptive filenames containing the site and date when you expect to save revised copies, for example project-guide-2026-09-30.html.
Download a page in Chrome on Android
- While connected, open the webpage in Chrome for Android.
- Tap More (⋮).
- Tap Download.
- When you need it offline, open Chrome’s Downloads list and tap the saved page.
From the Downloads list you can read, delete, or share the item. Google also notes that the initial save requires an internet connection. When you are connected again, Reload opens the live version instead of relying on the old local copy.
What Chrome actually downloads
Chrome’s built-in consumer workflow saves the page currently open in your tab. It is not documented as a crawler that follows every link across an entire domain. Saving a home page does not automatically download its articles, linked documents, or other sections.
The saved copy may include HTML, styles, images, and other resources that Chrome can retrieve during the save. Offline behavior still depends on how the page was built. A form that submits to a server, a login session, a live feed, streaming video, or an app that fetches data after loading can stop working without a network connection.
Reading list versus a downloaded file
Desktop Chrome’s Reading list is reached through More → Bookmarks and lists → Reading list → Add tab to reading list. It is useful for organizing pages you plan to read later. Chrome’s Help documentation presents that feature separately from the explicit Save page as… download workflow.

If your requirement is a file that you can locate, copy, archive, or open without Chrome’s reading-list interface, use Save page as… on desktop or Download on Android.
Can you download an entire website?
Not with Chrome’s ordinary Save page command alone. You must save pages individually, and each page may have different assets or access requirements. A domain-wide mirror is a different job that needs a crawler or archiving tool, permission to retrieve the content, and enough storage.
Before attempting broader archiving, check the site’s terms, copyright conditions, robots guidance, and account restrictions. Do not try to bypass paywalls, authentication controls, bot checks, or other access protections.

Use MHTML when you need a single-file archive
For extension or developer workflows, Chrome’s official chrome.pageCapture API can save a tab as MHTML (also called MIME HTML). MHTML packages a page and captured resources in one archive rather than leaving a separate HTML file and resource directory.
Chrome documents an important restriction: “for security reasons a MHTML file can only be loaded from the file system and that it can only be loaded in the main frame.” In practical terms, open the archive as a local file; do not expect it to work when embedded as a frame or served like an ordinary web page.

When MHTML is a good fit
- You need one file to attach, archive, or move between computers.
- You are building a Chrome extension or internal capture workflow.
- You want a reproducible snapshot of the tab rather than a live page.
When it is not a complete solution
- Server-side actions, accounts, live APIs, and streaming media still need network access.
- Some pages rely on scripts that only run correctly at their original origin.
- The file-system and main-frame restrictions can affect how another application opens it.
Extensions that capture more resources
Chrome Web Store’s Web Page Downloader listing describes downloading HTML, images, CSS, JavaScript, and embedded documents for offline viewing. Those are the vendor listing’s claims, not a guarantee that every site or dynamic function will work offline.
Extension permissions, maintenance, availability, reviews, and program terms can change. Before installing, inspect the current permissions and publisher information, read recent reviews, and test the result on a non-critical page. Prefer Chrome’s built-in saving when a single static page is all you need.

Troubleshooting saved pages
The Save page as command is missing
Confirm that you are using desktop Chrome and open the three-dot More menu. The current path is Cast, save, and share → Save page as…. A managed work device may restrict downloads; ask your administrator if the option is disabled.
The file opens but looks incomplete
Reconnect and save again after the page finishes loading. Expand sections or scroll through lazy-loaded content first, because resources that never load in the tab may not be present in the copy. If the page still depends on API calls, accept that its offline version may only contain the initial shell.
Images or styles are missing
Check that Chrome was online throughout the save and that you kept the companion resource folder next to the HTML file. Moving only the HTML file can break relative links to downloaded assets. Saving again to a folder where you have write permission can resolve a partial capture.

Android cannot find the download
Open Chrome’s More menu and choose Downloads. Use the item’s share or delete controls there. If it is absent, verify that the download completed while online and repeat the download.

A downloaded page is a snapshot. Reconnect and open the original URL for current content, then save a new copy if you need an updated offline version.
