To keep a Steam game that is leaving the store, buy it on the account you intend to use while its purchase option is still available, then install it from your Library and let the download finish before the announced cutoff. You can also create a Steam Backup for compatible titles. Neither step guarantees perpetual access, future updates, or online play.
Before the game leaves the store: buy and install it
- Check the title’s specific deadline. Read the notice on its official Steam store page or the publisher’s announcement. Follow the stated date, time, and time zone; removal timing and purchase availability vary by game.
- Purchase it on the right Steam account. Complete the transaction before the purchase option disappears. Save the confirmation and verify the transaction in that account’s purchase history.
- Install it before the cutoff. In the Steam client, open Library, select the game, and choose Install. Wait for the download and installation to finish. This puts the game files on your local drive, but does not ensure that online services will keep running or that the game will receive future updates.
Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement describes access to Steam content through account subscriptions and states, “The Content and Services are licensed, not sold.” The agreement also notes that access requires a Steam account and may require the Steam client or an internet connection; individual games can have additional terms. That language is context, not a promise that every delisted game will remain available indefinitely or a conclusion about consumer rights in every jurisdiction. Does a delisted game stay in your Steam Library?
Removing a game from sale is not the same thing as removing it automatically from every existing owner’s Library. Valve’s developer-facing Steamworks documentation says, “The store page for the game remains accessible, but is removed from listings in the store.” Its documentation also explains that a Steam package grants applications and depots, and that package contents determine what a customer may download and launch. In practice, whether you can install or reinstall a particular game depends on your account’s entitlement and the title’s package and downloadable files. These general descriptions are not a guarantee of indefinite access for every title.

Should you make a Steam Backup?
A completed installation gives you a local copy on the library drive you chose. Steam’s built-in Backup feature can create a separate copy for restoring compatible game files, which may be useful if you want to preserve a copy somewhere with enough free space, such as another drive. It does not guarantee that saves or custom content are included for every game, and it cannot preserve account access or online functionality.
Steam warns that games using third-party installers or downloaders may not work with Steam Backup. Check Steam Support’s instructions for using the Steam Backup Feature and the game’s requirements before relying on it.

If the game is missing or marked uninstalled
- Confirm the account. Check that you are signed in to the account that bought the game, then inspect its purchase history for a completed transaction. Steam Support’s missing-games guidance covers account and purchase checks.
- Check Library visibility. Review hidden games and clear Library filters before concluding that access is gone.
- Let Steam locate existing files. If the game files are still on the drive but Steam shows the game as uninstalled, starting installation can prompt Steam to recognize files in the correct library location. Follow Steam’s instructions for installed games appearing as uninstalled.
A non-Steam shortcut is not a Steam copy
Adding a separately installed game to your Steam Library creates a shortcut, not a Steam purchase or package entitlement. Steam says non-Steam shortcuts do not enable Steam downloads or updates for that game. Use this option only to launch a game you already have through another route; it does not preserve Steam ownership. See Steam Support’s instructions for adding non-Steam games.
