How to Download a Google Site for Offline Viewing

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To save a Google Site you own, use Google Drive or Google Takeout to export its data and download an archive. To browse a published site offline when you do not need to edit or re-import it, use HTTrack to make a local mirror. These methods create different results: an owner archive preserves site data, while a mirror copies what a visitor can fetch. Neither guarantees that every login-protected feature, live script, or embedded service will work without an internet connection.

Choose the right way to save the site

Your goal Use What you get
Keep a backup of a Google Site you own or administer Google Drive or Google Takeout export A downloadable archive of available Sites data and related content. It is the preservation-oriented option, not a guarantee of a fully functioning offline website.
Browse a published site locally without internet HTTrack A visitor-style copy of pages and fetchable assets arranged for local browsing. It does not turn the copy into an editable Google Site.
Keep both a preservation copy and a locally browsable snapshot Use both methods An owner archive plus a separate mirror for offline reading.

Choose based on access and intended use, not just the word “download.” You need permission to export the owner’s data for the first route; a mirror is limited to material a visitor can access and that you are allowed to copy.

Export a Google Site you own with Drive or Takeout

Google’s documented route is to export and download Google Sites data from Google Drive. The available export can include draft and published sites, embedded URLs and full pages, table of contents, image carousels, text and collapsible text, buttons, custom paths and navigation links, themes, fonts, colors, logos, favicon, navigation bars, announcements, file cabinets, attachments, lists, page templates, and site-owner information. Which data is available can depend on account access and export policy.

  1. Check access. Make sure the Site is in an account and Drive location you can export. If it is a work or school account, organization policy may affect whether data is downloadable.
  2. Open Google’s export workflow. Select Google Drive/Sites data in the export options. Google may provide other Drive data in the same archive, depending on your selections.
  3. Create the archive. Start the export and wait for Google to prepare it. A large export can fail if it exceeds maximum export size limits.
  4. Download and extract it. Save the archive locally, extract it, and inspect the included HTML and other files. Do not assume that a downloaded archive is itself a ready-to-browse offline copy.
  5. Verify what matters. Open the exported files and check important pages, images, attachments, and navigation. Separately note any element that relies on a live Google service, login, or third-party embed.
  6. Keep a second copy. If the archive is important, store another copy on a separate device or removable storage. A single local copy can be lost or damaged.

What the archive does—and does not—preserve

The export is useful for retaining Site data and associated settings, but downloading it does not prove that all live behavior will work offline. Authentication, server-side interactions, scripts that call online services, and embedded content can still depend on network access. Treat the archive as a backup to inspect, not as a promise that the published experience has been reproduced exactly.

Account and size limitations

Google warns that exports exceeding maximum size limits can fail. Work or school accounts may have data unavailable for download, and administrators have separate organization-export controls. If an export is unavailable or fails, check account permissions and organizational policy, and consider whether the export is too large. A visitor-style mirror is a different approach; it does not bypass permissions on private content.

Mirror a published Google Site with HTTrack

HTTrack is a third-party website mirroring program. Its documentation describes it simply: “HTTrack copies a website to your disk so you can read it offline.” It recursively downloads HTML, images, and other files, preserves the relative link structure, and lets you browse the local copy in a browser. It can also resume an interrupted download and update an existing mirror.

  1. Start with the published URL. Use the public address visitors use, rather than assuming a draft or private site will be accessible to the crawler.
  2. Install HTTrack for your operating system from the HTTrack project site.
  3. Create a project in HTTrack and enter the Google Site’s published URL as the address to mirror.
  4. Keep the crawl within the site’s domain unless you intentionally want to include linked domains. Following external links can greatly expand what is copied and may capture material outside the site you intended to save.
  5. Run the mirror to completion. If the download is interrupted, HTTrack can resume; it can also update an existing mirror when you need a newer copy.
  6. Open the generated local start page in a browser after the crawl finishes.
  7. Test it offline. Disconnect from the internet and try several pages, navigation links, images, and attachments that matter to you. This distinguishes files actually saved to disk from elements that only appeared to load while online.

What an HTTrack mirror can miss

HTTrack mirrors what a visitor can fetch. It cannot make private pages accessible when the crawler lacks authentication, and a local copy may not reproduce login-dependent views, server-side interactions, scripts that need the live service, or some embedded media. A link may be present in the copied page while its destination remains online-only. Offline testing is therefore part of the download, not an optional final check.

Permission and scope

Only archive or mirror content you are allowed to copy, and respect the site owner’s rights and the site’s terms. For a site you administer, the Drive/Takeout export is the better preservation route; HTTrack can be an additional visitor-style snapshot. For someone else’s published site, mirror only material you have permission to keep.

Can you save an entire Google Site as HTML?

HTTrack can create a set of local web files for browsing, but it is a mirror of visitor-accessible content rather than a complete export of the site’s editable Google Sites project. The owner export is broader as an archive of available Sites data and settings, but should not be confused with a guaranteed standalone HTML site. If you need both an archive and something convenient to click through offline, use the two methods for their respective purposes and test the results separately.

Or skip the browser setup

If your actual need is to keep a visual record of a page—not a browsable offline copy or an export of a whole Google Site—ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot from one GET request. It does not download a complete site for offline browsing; use Drive/Takeout or HTTrack for that.

For example, replace the URL with the published page you want to capture:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://sites.google.com/view/example-site -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up free for ScreenshotNeo.

Troubleshooting offline downloads

  • Google export is missing or unavailable: Confirm you are using the account and Drive location that contain the Site. For a work or school account, ask the administrator whether organization policy restricts exports.
  • Google export fails: Google warns that exceeding maximum export size limits can cause failure. Check the export’s size and account availability; do not assume repeated attempts will overcome a policy restriction.
  • The extracted Google archive is hard to browse: Inspect the included HTML and files rather than expecting the archive itself to behave like a published site. Use HTTrack separately if you need a visitor-style local rendition.
  • HTTrack saves only part of the site: Check whether the relevant pages are publicly accessible and whether the crawl stayed within the intended domain. Private or login-dependent pages may not be fetchable.
  • Pages open, but embeds or controls fail offline: The element may depend on a live service, authentication, a server-side action, or a script that is not reproduced locally. Test offline and use the owner export if you need to preserve available Site data.
  • The local copy has broken external links: A mirror may not include linked domains when the crawl is kept within the original domain. Include another domain only deliberately and only when you have a reason and permission to copy it.
  • The downloaded copy is stale: A mirror represents what HTTrack fetched at the time of the crawl. HTTrack can update an existing mirror; an owner archive should likewise be treated as a dated backup and recreated when you need a newer one.

Practical choice

Use Google’s Drive/Takeout export when you own or administer the Site and want an archive of available site data. Use HTTrack when you need a browsable local rendition of a published site and do not need to re-import it into Google Sites. Use both when you want preservation and a visitor-style offline snapshot. In every case, test the downloaded result and retain a second copy of an important archive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I edit an HTTrack copy in Google Sites?

No. HTTrack creates a local mirror for browsing; it is not an editable Google Sites project or an import route.

Will an offline copy show pages that require a Google account?

Not necessarily. A mirror can only fetch what is accessible to it, and authentication-dependent content may remain unavailable offline.

Can I use a screenshot as a substitute for downloading the site?

No. A screenshot records a page’s appearance; it is not a set of linked pages or a site archive.
