You can downgrade from iOS 26 to iOS 18 only if Apple is still authorizing the exact iOS 18 build for your exact iPhone model. The process is not an in-place update: it erases the iPhone and restores an authorized firmware file from a Mac or Windows computer.
If the iOS 18 build you want is no longer signed, Finder, Apple Devices, and iTunes cannot install it through the normal restore process. Check signing status and confirm that you have a compatible pre-iOS-26 backup before erasing anything.

First, determine whether your downgrade is possible
Apple’s software-authorization system checks whether a particular operating-system build is currently authorized for a particular device. Having an iOS 18 IPSW file does not make that file installable. Apple uses signing and device-specific authorization to prevent unauthorized or replayed system software from being restored.
That makes the answer depend on three details:
- Your exact iPhone model. Open Settings > General > About and record the model name and model number. “iPhone 15,” “iPhone 15 Pro,” and regional variants should not be treated as interchangeable firmware targets.
- The exact iOS 18 build. iOS 18 is not one single restore file. A late iOS 18 release, such as an iOS 18.7 build, may be signed for one model and unavailable for another.
- Apple’s signing status at the time of restore. Signing can change without notice. A status page or IPSW index is useful for an initial check, but Apple’s authorization server makes the final decision during the restore.
Signing status is intentionally not stated here as a universal current claim: verify the exact model and build immediately before you begin. If the desired build is marked unsigned, stop. Do not erase the iPhone, because an old IPSW download will not bypass Apple’s authorization check.

What the ordinary Restore button will do
Apple’s normal Restore command installs the latest version that Apple makes available for the device. It does not necessarily install the older iOS 18 version you have in mind.
If your exact iOS 18 IPSW is still signed, you may need to select that file manually using the platform’s standard modifier-key workflow: hold Option on a Mac or Shift on Windows while selecting Restore, then choose the matching IPSW file. The exact app interface can vary, but the authorization rule does not: the restore still fails if Apple no longer signs that build.
Protect your data before you restore
A downgrade is an erase-and-restore operation. Apple’s computer restore procedure removes the iPhone’s information and settings, so treat the backup stage as mandatory rather than optional.
The best backup to use
The safest rollback source is a backup made before iOS 26 was installed:
- An encrypted backup made with Finder on a Mac or Apple Devices on Windows is usually the most complete local option.
- An iCloud backup made before the beta or iOS 26 installation may also be usable, provided it is compatible with the iOS 18 release you are restoring.
- Keep the pre-iOS-26 backup separate and do not overwrite it with a newer backup.
A backup made while the iPhone is running iOS 26 may require iOS 26 or a later release and may not restore to iOS 18. Consider that backup valuable for preserving data, but do not assume that it can be placed on an older operating system. Apple’s beta guidance specifically directs users returning to a prior release to use a backup made before the beta installation.
When making a computer backup, turn on encryption and remember its password. Apple notes that unencrypted backups do not transfer Health and Activity data from an iPhone or Apple Watch. If you cannot remember the encryption password, do not erase the phone until you have another plan for the information stored on it.
Pre-restore checklist
- Confirm the exact iPhone model and target iOS 18 build.
- Confirm that Apple still signs that build for that model immediately before starting.
- Preserve a compatible pre-iOS-26 backup.
- Make a final backup of the current phone as an additional data copy, without replacing the older backup.
- Know the Apple Account email address and password used on the iPhone.
- Know the device passcode.
- Have a current Mac, Apple Devices app on Windows, or iTunes where applicable.
- Use a reliable data cable and a direct computer connection rather than an unreliable hub.
- Make sure the computer will not sleep or lose power during the restore.
Choose the correct cable
The cable must support data and must match both the iPhone and the computer. It cannot bypass Apple’s signing system.

Supported downgrade procedure when iOS 18 is still signed
These steps apply when the exact iOS 18 IPSW is authorized for the exact iPhone model.
1. Update the computer and prepare the firmware
Install available updates for macOS or Windows. On a Mac, use Finder; on a current Windows installation, use the Apple Devices app; on older supported Windows setups, iTunes may be the applicable Apple tool.

Obtain the IPSW for the exact iPhone model and the specific signed iOS 18 build you intend to install. An IPSW for a similar-looking model is not a safe substitute. If you cannot verify the model match and signing status, do not proceed to the erase stage.

Make a final backup of the phone as it exists on iOS 26, then preserve the pre-iOS-26 backup separately. The newer backup may not be restorable to iOS 18, but it may still be useful if you need to return to iOS 26 or recover individual information later.
3. Turn off Find My iPhone
On the iPhone, open Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My iPhone, turn Find My iPhone off, and enter the Apple Account password if prompted.
Find My and Activation Lock can prevent a computer restore from proceeding normally. If you cannot turn off Find My because you cannot access the phone, follow Apple’s account and recovery guidance or contact Apple rather than attempting to circumvent Activation Lock.
4. Connect the iPhone to the computer
Connect the phone with a reliable data cable. Use a Lightning data cable for a Lightning connector or a USB-C data cable capable of data transfer for a USB-C connector. If the computer does not detect the phone, try another known-good data cable, another USB port, and the current Apple software before assuming that the IPSW is the problem.

For an iPhone 8 or later, including iPhone models with Face ID:
- Quickly press and release Volume Up.
- Quickly press and release Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button until the recovery-mode screen showing a computer and cable appears. Continue holding past the Apple logo if necessary.
For an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus, hold the Side button and Volume Down button together until the recovery-mode screen appears. For an iPhone 6s or earlier model, hold the Home button and the top or side button together. Apple documents model-specific recovery sequences, so use the sequence for your exact model if these controls differ.
6. Select Restore—not Update—for the downgrade
Open Finder or Apple Devices and select the iPhone when it appears in recovery mode. Choose Restore if your goal is to erase iOS 26 and install the selected iOS 18 firmware.
Update is different: it attempts to reinstall the current operating system while preserving personal data. It can be a sensible first troubleshooting attempt when an installation has failed and saving data matters more than changing versions, but it is not the normal route to an iOS 18 downgrade.

To select a specific signed IPSW instead of allowing the app to install the latest available release, use the platform’s standard manual-selection gesture—Option-click Restore on Mac or Shift-click Restore on Windows, where supported—and choose the exact IPSW file.
7. Let the restore finish without disconnecting
The computer may need to download firmware before the restore begins. Keep the iPhone connected, do not close the restore application, and do not interrupt the computer’s power or network connection.
If the download takes longer than the recovery-mode timeout and the iPhone leaves recovery mode, let the download finish. Then enter recovery mode again and repeat the restore selection. This does not make an unsigned IPSW installable; it only addresses the recovery screen timing out during a legitimate restore.
8. Set up iOS 18 and restore the compatible backup
After the erase and firmware installation, complete the initial setup. When the phone offers an Apps & Data choice, select the option to restore from iCloud if using a compatible iCloud backup, or connect it to the Mac or Windows computer and choose Restore from this backup for the pre-iOS-26 computer backup.

Set up from the compatible pre-iOS-26 backup instead, and keep the newer backup available for a later iOS 26 restore if necessary.
If the iPhone is stuck, blank, or will not boot
Connect it to a computer and put it in recovery mode using the button sequence for the model. When Finder or Apple Devices offers Update or Restore, choose based on the immediate objective:

If the phone is an affected beta device, Apple’s recovery guidance is to connect it to a computer, enter recovery mode, restore using the updated beta or the currently available iOS version, and then restore from a backup. That recovery route can make the phone usable again, but it does not guarantee that an older iOS 18 build is available or signed.
What to do when iOS 18 is no longer signed
If the target iOS 18 build is unsigned for your exact model, the supported downgrade route is closed. Finder, Apple Devices, and iTunes cannot override Apple’s authorization server simply because an IPSW file can still be downloaded.
Your practical choices are:
- Stay on iOS 26 and turn off beta updates.
- Wait for a future public release if your problem is specific to beta software.
- Restore to the currently signed public iOS version, understanding that this also erases the phone.
- Contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider if the device is malfunctioning.
- Use a previously created compatible backup only after confirming that the target operating system accepts it.
Unofficial jailbreak, exploit, SHSH-blob, or “3uTools” downgrade methods should not be treated as dependable consumer instructions. Their behavior can vary by device, chipset, firmware, and signing conditions, and they can introduce security, privacy, or data-loss risks. They are outside Apple’s supported restore process.

Turning off beta updates is not the same as downgrading
On iOS 16.4 and later, beta enrollment is managed at Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates > Off. Turning beta updates off prevents the phone from receiving future beta releases. It does not remove the beta already installed and does not install iOS 18.
Apple’s supported path back to a prior release is to restore the device and then use a backup made before the beta installation—assuming the desired release is still authorized for that iPhone. If the device is running a public iOS 26 release rather than a beta, the beta-toggle setting may not apply at all; the same signing requirement still controls whether iOS 18 can be installed.

The restore installs iOS 26 again
You likely used the ordinary Restore command without manually selecting the iOS 18 IPSW, or the selected iOS 18 build was no longer authorized. Check the exact model and signing status again. A normal Restore installs the latest available authorized release.

The computer says the requested software is not eligible
Recheck the IPSW’s model identifier and version. If both appear correct, the build may no longer be signed, or Apple’s authorization check may have rejected it. Do not keep erasing the phone or repeatedly retrying an unsigned file.
The phone exits recovery mode while the firmware downloads
Let the download complete, then put the iPhone back into recovery mode and start the restore again. Keep the computer awake and connected to power during the download.
The computer does not see the iPhone
Update macOS, Apple Devices, or iTunes; reconnect directly to the computer; try a different USB port; and use a known-good data cable of the correct connector type. Re-enter recovery mode and check whether the iPhone appears. If the buttons are damaged or the phone still cannot be detected, stop before repeated erase attempts and arrange service.
The restore finishes but the backup will not load
This is commonly a version-compatibility problem when the backup was made on iOS 26. Try the pre-iOS-26 backup instead. Do not assume that a backup made on a newer operating system can be restored onto an older one.
Activation Lock or Find My prevents setup
Use the Apple Account credentials associated with the device and make sure Find My was turned off before the computer restore. If you cannot resolve the account requirement, contact Apple; a restore does not remove ownership protections.
When to seek service
Arrange professional help if recovery mode is unavailable, the buttons are damaged, the computer never detects the iPhone, or the phone repeatedly fails during an otherwise valid restore. Apple recommends service when the iPhone remains on the Restore screen or cannot be force-restarted.

An Apple Authorized Service Provider or Independent Repair Provider can be appropriate for hardware or recovery problems. Authorized providers offer Apple-certified in-warranty and out-of-warranty service; Independent Repair Providers may offer out-of-warranty iPhone repairs using Apple genuine parts and Apple repair resources. Neither type of provider can guarantee that Apple will authorize an unsigned iOS 18 build, so service is for a malfunctioning device—not a way to bypass signing.

Can I downgrade from iOS 26 to iOS 18 without a computer?
There is no supported, reliable over-the-air downgrade path. A downgrade normally requires a Mac or Windows computer running Finder, Apple Devices, or applicable iTunes, plus a restore that erases the iPhone.
Will turning off iOS 26 beta updates install iOS 18?
No. Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates > Off stops future beta updates but does not remove the installed system. Returning to iOS 18 requires an erase-and-restore procedure, and Apple must still sign the target build.
Can I use an iOS 26 backup after downgrading to iOS 18?
Do not assume so. A backup made on iOS 26 may require iOS 26 or a later release and may be rejected by iOS 18. A compatible backup made before the iOS 26 installation is the safer restore source.
Why can I download an iOS 18 IPSW but still not install it?
The IPSW file is only the firmware package. Apple’s authorization server also checks whether that exact build is currently signed for your exact iPhone model. An unsigned file cannot be installed through the normal Apple restore process.
Does restoring iOS 18 erase everything?
Yes. A computer Restore erases the iPhone’s information and settings. Back up first, preserve a compatible pre-iOS-26 backup, and make sure you know the Apple Account credentials needed for activation.
Should I choose Update or Restore in recovery mode?
