The Sphinx fight in Valor Mortis is best approached as a two-stage encounter. In the reported opening stage, wait for the attack to commit, dodge only when necessary, and take a short punish before resetting your position. When the Sphinx becomes enraged, stop counting on that opening rhythm: stay mobile, preserve stamina for unblockable attacks and escapes, and react to each committed animation instead of rolling on a memorized schedule.
Exact frame timings, damage values, hitbox data, rewards and a complete move list have not been published. The advice below separates the game’s documented combat rules from the Sphinx-specific details reported in secondary coverage and preview footage.

What is known about the Sphinx encounter
Secondary guides and preview footage describe Sphinx, Devourer of the Unworthy as a four-legged boss wearing a golden headpiece. Those reports place the encounter in Chapter 4, after a cart ride through a dark mine. They also describe two broad stages rather than a single unchanging pattern:

The placement and visual description are secondary evidence, not an official encounter sheet. The developer had not published a complete boss list in the material available for this guide, so treat a later patch, regional build or official guide as authoritative if it changes the fight.

How dodging works in Valor Mortis
Valor Mortis uses a first-person Soulslike combat model. Blocking consumes a small amount of health, while dodging is the intended answer to attacks signaled as unblockable. Correctly timed parries can create devastating damage opportunities. William also carries a flintlock pistol that can stagger enemies through weak points, but ammunition is scarce. Transmutations and Catalysts provide additional build options; Catalysts can improve stats including stamina and health.
Those are general systems documented for the game, not proof that every Sphinx attack has a particular classification. Do not assume a move is parryable, unblockable or vulnerable to a pistol stagger until its animation and your combat feedback establish that behavior in your version.
Stage one: learn the telegraph, then punish
Start at a distance that lets you see the animation
Use the first stage as reconnaissance. Keep enough space to see the Sphinx’s body and head rather than standing directly against it. A crowded camera makes a telegraph harder to read and encourages panic rolls. Avoid backing into walls, mine structures or the edge of the arena; you need room to move when the attack is committed.

The useful timing rule is “late, not early.” Hold your dodge while the Sphinx is beginning an animation, then roll or sidestep when the strike is actually committed toward your position. A pre-emptive dodge can finish before the hit arrives and can leave you without stamina for the follow-up. Because no frame-by-frame data has been published, a guaranteed number of frames or an exact invulnerability window would be misleading.

Take a short punish and reset
After an attack passes, look for the recovery portion of the animation. If the Sphinx has clearly missed and is returning to a neutral stance, deliver a conservative hit or a brief sequence that you know you can finish safely. Then return to a neutral position. The goal of the opening stage is to learn which attacks create real recovery, not to force the largest possible combo.
Record behavior, not a fixed combo list
On an early attempt, mentally label attacks by their visual beginning and result: a lunge that crosses space, a sweep that catches your side, a pause before a heavy impact, or any move that carries the game’s unblockable signal. These descriptions are a practice method, not official Sphinx move names. Confirm how each animation behaves in your build before relying on it.
Stage two: what changes when the Sphinx enrages
Discard the first-stage rhythm
The reported second stage is erratic and faster-changing. An opening that was safe to punish once may chain into another attack after the transition. Do not continue dodging on the same beat simply because it worked during the first health segment. Watch the current animation and wait for a new commitment.
Keep moving without panic-rolling
“Stay mobile” does not mean continuously spend stamina. Walk, strafe and reposition when there is no immediate strike; reserve a full dodge for an attack that is about to connect or for an emergency escape from a bad angle. Repeated panic dodges can exhaust the resource before an actual unblockable arrives, leaving you unable to evade the hit.
Prioritize escape routes over damage
In the enraged stage, a safe reset is more valuable than an extra attack. If the Sphinx drives you toward an obstacle, move laterally or around its flank before committing to offense. Once you have space and stamina, wait for the next clearly finished animation. The available evidence does not establish a fixed phase threshold, so do not plan around a particular percentage of health.
Dodge, parry or block? A decision rule for each attack
| What you observe | Preferred response | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The game’s unblockable signal appears | Dodge at the attack’s commitment | Dodging is the documented response to unblockable attacks; blocking is not a reliable substitute. |
| A normal, readable strike that you have confirmed is parryable | Parry if your timing is reliable; otherwise create distance and dodge | A successful parry can produce heavy damage, but a failed attempt costs health and position. |
| An attack classification is uncertain | Use space and a late dodge while observing the result | No Sphinx-specific move list or classification has been published. |
| You are out of stamina or trapped near terrain | Stop attacking, move toward open space and recover before the next commitment | A reserve is needed for genuine unblockables and repositioning. |
Blocking can still be a situational defensive choice against attacks you have confirmed are blockable, but the game’s general rule means it costs a small amount of health. Do not treat it as a free way to absorb the Sphinx’s pressure.
Two workable plans for the fight
Neither approach is established as a single best build. Choose according to how clearly you can read the animation and how consistently you manage stamina.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Patient parry-and-punish | Requires a clear read of attacks you have confirmed are parryable | Usually saves dodge stamina when the parry is accurate; a miss can create a severe recovery problem | Higher if you keep parrying after the tempo changes | Can reduce the need for pistol ammunition, but failed attempts may cost health |
| Mobility-first | Works with less certainty about parry windows, provided you can see the commitment | Uses more stamina during repeated repositioning; controlled movement is safer than panic rolls | Lower if you preserve an escape reserve and stop forcing counterattacks | Leaves your flintlock and transmutations available for confirmed opportunities rather than requiring them |
A practical hybrid is to learn with mobility first, then add a parry only for an animation you can recognize consistently. This avoids making an unverified Sphinx move classification the foundation of your strategy.

Using the flintlock and transmutations
Do not spend scarce ammunition on guesses
The flintlock can stagger enemies through weak points, but ammunition is limited. The available material does not establish a Sphinx-specific weak point, stagger threshold or guaranteed pistol window. Save shots for a weak point you have actually confirmed through repeated combat feedback, and fire only when the animation leaves you enough time to aim without being hit.
Let your Catalyst choices support the mistake you actually make
Catalysts can improve stamina and health among other stats. If failed dodges leave you unable to escape, a stamina-oriented choice may support a mobility plan; if one mistimed block or parry ends an attempt, additional health may provide more learning room. These are preparation principles, not a claim that a particular Catalyst is required for the Sphinx.
Use transmutations as options, not as a substitute for reading
Transmutations expand William’s combat choices, but no source establishes a Sphinx-specific resistance or weakness. Choose an effect that fits your tested opening and keep enough attention on the boss animation to respond to the next attack. A powerful effect cannot rescue a character who has spent all stamina before the enraged stage’s commitment.

When to punish the Sphinx
Good opportunities
- After a strike has visibly passed your position and the Sphinx is returning from recovery.
- After you have created lateral space and can see the entire next animation.
- After a confirmed parry or a confirmed pistol stagger, provided the follow-up is safe in your build.
Bad opportunities
- During the first movement of an attack, before its range and direction are clear.
- Immediately after a single dodge when you do not know whether a second hit is coming.
- When your stamina is too low for another defensive action.
- When the enraged Sphinx has pushed you against terrain or out of camera view.
Because exact recovery durations have not been published, count a punish as successful only if you can finish the action and still answer the next telegraph. If you are trading damage for a likely hit, the window was not safe enough.

Troubleshooting common failures
“I dodge early and still get hit.”
Delay the input until the attack has committed. Many Soulslike attacks begin with a long visual preparation, and an early roll can end before the active strike reaches you. Use walking or a small strafe during the preparation, then dodge once the direction is unavoidable.
“I run out of stamina in phase two.”
Stop chaining defensive inputs when no attack is imminent. Walk to maintain space, attack less often, and keep a reserve specifically for the unblockable signal or a corner escape. If your build allows it, a Catalyst that improves stamina can increase your margin for error.
“The first phase feels solved, then the transition overwhelms me.”
Change your objective at the transition. Stop looking for the old cadence, back away from hazards, and take only one conservative punish after a clearly finished animation. Treat the enraged stage as a new learning pass rather than an extension of the opening pattern.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“My parry attempt causes more damage than it prevents.”
Return to mobility until you can identify that attack reliably. The general combat system rewards correct parries, but the sources do not confirm which Sphinx attacks are parryable. A dodge that preserves position is preferable to a speculative parry.
“I waste pistol rounds without getting a stagger.”
Stop firing at unconfirmed targets. The flintlock’s ammunition is scarce, and no published source names a Sphinx weak point or stagger requirement. Observe whether the same location and timing produce consistent feedback before spending another shot.
A repeatable practice routine
- Enter the opening stage with a learning goal. For the first attempt, identify the beginning of each attack and whether the game’s unblockable signal appears.
- Use one defensive answer at a time. Dodge a committed strike, or test a parry only against an attack you have already confirmed as parryable. Do not mix several new timings in one exchange.
- Take one punish. After a clear miss or recovery, make a short attack and immediately restore spacing.
- Watch your stamina. If the bar is low, move without attacking until you can afford another genuine dodge.
- At the enraged transition, reset your assumptions. Keep the arena open and test the new pace before attempting a long punish.
- Review what actually happened. Note the animation, your input point and whether a second hit followed. Build your own reliable observations rather than memorizing an unverified frame count.
What is not established yet
No reliable published source in the available material provides a Sphinx health total, phase threshold, damage values, frame-perfect dodge timing, guaranteed invulnerability-frame count, complete move list, named weakness or reward table. A guide that supplies those numbers without an official source or directly documented footage is presenting additional claims that cannot be verified here.
The most defensible strategy is therefore principle-based: learn the readable first-stage telegraphs, punish only committed attacks, conserve stamina, and treat the enraged stage as a change of pace. The game’s broader combat rules support dodging unblockables and parrying confirmed parryable attacks, but they do not turn an unknown Sphinx animation into a guaranteed timing chart.
