Use the Gnasher for point-blank damage, commit to melee only when you can approach deliberately, and fall back to blind fire from cover when a rush is too risky. If you mean Gears 5’s Yank, Mantle, or Counter moves, practice them in Bootcamp’s Close Cover Combat drills.
What to do when an enemy closes in during E-Day
Xbox Wire’s October 6, 2026 E-Day launch guide advises players to stay low and move from cover to cover, avoiding open ground unless deliberately rushing an enemy with a melee attack. In practice, don’t cross an exposed lane just to chase a nearby opponent: use cover to change position and make the enemy approach through a safer angle.

Choose a response based on the opening
- Use the Gnasher at point-blank range. The guide describes it as especially effective for point-blank damage.

The cited E-Day guide does not establish a universal dodge input, exact counter timing, invulnerability frames, or a guaranteed stagger sequence. How to practice counters in Gears 5
If you are playing Gears 5, use Bootcamp’s Close Cover Combat section to practice Yank, Mantle, and Counter. The official Gears 5 Bootcamp announcement, dated July 15, 2019, says these drills let players learn the moves without the pressure of real opponents. That advice is specific to Gears 5; it does not establish the same controls or training setup for E-Day.
