Save purchase histories, receipts, statements, and provider communications, then ask a qualified adviser in your jurisdiction which records matter and how to use them. A charge or record alone does not establish that a purchase was unauthorized, that a refund is owed, or that a claim will succeed.
Start by mapping accounts and payment routes
Before collecting screenshots, make a simple inventory of the systems involved. A game purchase might appear in a game account, a console or device account, an app-store history, and a bank or payment statement. Those records may identify different parts of the same transaction—or fail to identify the game or player at all.

- Child’s game and in-game account identifier.
- Game title, platform or app store, and device used.
- Payment method, such as a bank card, mobile payment, or stored account balance.
- Adult account or payment account that received the charge, if known.
Mark connections as confirmed, possible, or unknown. Do not assume that the person named on a payment account made a particular in-game purchase, or that a game-account record proves who authorized it.

Save records from the game or platform, the app store where relevant, and the payment provider. UK government advice recommends checking bills for money taken without a parent’s knowledge or consent and contacting the game operator or platform provider about unexpected charges. That is practical UK guidance, not a determination about what happened in an individual case. GOV.UK / Competition and Markets Authority parent guidance says its materials are not legal advice.

- Game, platform, and app-store purchase histories or order confirmations.
- Bank, card, or mobile-payment statements showing the amount in real currency and the merchant descriptor.
- In-game transaction history, account notices, or records linking a payment to virtual currency or an item, if available.
- Support tickets, emails, complaint reference numbers, refund requests, and provider replies.
Keep original exports or statements where possible. If you save screenshots, retain enough surrounding context to identify the account, date, and page; note when and how you captured them. These are sensible organization practices, not a guarantee that a record meets any court’s admissibility or authentication rules.
Make a transaction ledger in real currency
Put each identifiable transaction on its own row. Use the payment statement or receipt for the actual money amount; record virtual currency or an item separately. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau warns that in-game currencies and inconsistent exchange rates can obscure real-world costs, so do not treat a number of game coins as cash unless a source record establishes the conversion.

Do not fill gaps with estimates. If two records appear to describe the same purchase, note the possible match and preserve both records rather than silently merging them. If an entry cannot be tied to a game or account, say so.

Keep a separate chronology of discovery and contact
Transactions show payments; a chronology shows what happened next. Record dates as precisely as the source allows, and preserve the underlying messages. Distinguish a verbatim email or support reply from your own summary.

- When you first noticed or learned about the charges.
- When you checked account histories, statements, or device settings.
- When you contacted the game operator, platform, app store, or payment provider—and any case or reference number.
- When you requested a refund, received a reply, changed purchase controls, or saw a refund or reversal.
- Any unresolved discrepancy, such as a bank charge with no matching platform entry.
UK advice points parents to the operator or platform provider about unexpected charges. Separately, UK government information about paid loot boxes describes specific policy and industry commitments, including refunds in that context; it does not establish a universal refund entitlement or guarantee that every game follows those commitments. DCMS guidance on loot-box protections says the participating guidance does not cover the entire UK games sector.
Compare records by what they can actually establish
No single record is a universal proof of who made or authorized a purchase. The useful question is what each record directly shows, what it leaves unclear, and whether another source can fill the gap.

This is a practical comparison, not a formal evidence ranking. A source may be useful for one question and silent on another; record its limits rather than making the document carry more weight than it can support.
Protect the child’s privacy while preserving relevant records
Collect only material related to the spending or claim, and avoid circulating passwords or unnecessary sensitive account information. If you use parental controls to limit purchases or monitor activity, explain them to the child in an age-appropriate way where appropriate. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office notes that parental controls can affect children’s privacy and rights and recommends transparency suited to the child’s age. Its guidance reproduces the GDPR principle that personal data should be processed “lawfully, fairly and in a transparent manner in relation to the data subject.” ICO parental-controls guidance.

Purchase controls can reduce future spending, but their location and functions vary by device and tool. The US Federal Trade Commission recommends setting parental controls across the devices a child uses; check the current settings for the particular device, game, and payment channel rather than assuming one setting covers them all. Ask a local adviser what the records need to prove
The legal effect of a purchase depends on the jurisdiction, the facts, and the type of claim. Before filing or making legal assertions, ask a qualified local lawyer or legal aid service:
- Which records and details are relevant to the potential claim?
- How should electronic records be preserved or authenticated?
- What deadlines, complaint steps, or court route apply?
- How should uncertain attribution or missing records be described?
Regulator guidance is not a substitute for advice on an individual dispute. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says online and mobile games are covered by Australian Consumer Law and provides a way to report potentially misleading conduct, but it does not resolve individual disputes or provide legal advice.
