For a one-off sum, percentage, or conversion, start by simplifying the arithmetic rather than opening a spreadsheet. Break the numbers into friendly parts, calculate each part, and combine the results. For example, 47 + 32 becomes 47 + 30 + 2 = 79. If the problem has several steps or you need an exact check, use your phone’s built-in calculator; for hands-busy situations, a voice calculator may be useful.
Choose the lightest tool for the job
Spreadsheets are designed for persistent tables, repeated formulas, and comparisons across many values. They add unnecessary setup for a single calculation. Use this decision guide instead:

| Situation | Best first choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One small sum, difference, or product | Mental arithmetic | You can simplify the numbers and finish without opening an app. |
| A percentage or conversion you want to check | Built-in phone calculator | It provides an exact result with little setup. |
| Several operations in sequence | Built-in calculator | Entering each operation reduces the burden on working memory. |
| Your hands are occupied | Voice input | A voice calculator can accept spoken percentages and multi-step calculations, according to its App Store listing. |
| A recurring calculation or a list of values | Spreadsheet | Rows, formulas, and saved data are more useful when the work must be repeated or compared. |
No controlled comparison establishes that one method is universally fastest, most accurate, most accessible, or most private. Choose based on the number of steps, the consequences of an error, and whether you need to save the result.

The most reusable technique is decomposition: rewrite a difficult number as smaller pieces that are easy to handle, then combine those pieces. The mental-math excerpt from Secrets of Mental Math, attributed to Arthur Benjamin and Michael Shermer, uses this approach for addition.

Add tens before units
Separate a two-digit addend into its tens and units. For 47 + 32:
- Split 32 into 30 + 2.
- Add the round part: 47 + 30 = 77.
- Add the remainder: 77 + 2 = 79.
This keeps each step small and avoids trying to hold the entire operation in your head at once. The same pattern works with larger numbers. For 268 + 145, calculate 268 + 100 = 368, then +40 = 408, then +5 = 413.
Group by place value
When adding several numbers, group hundreds, tens, and units separately. For 126 + 243 + 31, add 126 + 200 = 326, then +40 = 366, then +3 = 369, and finally +31 = 400. You can also pair numbers that make round totals, such as 18 + 42 = 60, before adding the remaining values.
Use compensation for awkward numbers
Move a small amount from one number to make the other easier, then account for it. To calculate 58 + 27, turn 58 into 60 by borrowing 2 from 27: 60 + 25 = 85. To calculate 103 − 48, use 103 − 50 + 2 = 55. Compensation is especially useful when a number is close to 10, 50, 100, or another round value.
Fast methods for common everyday operations
Subtraction
Subtract in round chunks, then finish with the remainder. For 742 − 286, subtract 200 to get 542, subtract 80 to get 462, and subtract 6 to get 456. If borrowing across several places feels cumbersome, round the subtrahend and correct: 742 − 300 = 442, then add back 14, giving 456.
For a quick check, add the difference to the smaller number. If 742 − 286 produced 456, verify that 456 + 286 = 742.

Multiplication
Break one factor into parts using the distributive property. For 23 × 7, calculate 20 × 7 = 140 and 3 × 7 = 21, then add them for 161. For 48 × 25, use 48 × 100 ÷ 4: 4,800 ÷ 4 = 1,200. Multiplying by 25 is equivalent to multiplying by 100 and dividing by 4, which often removes awkward intermediate steps.
For numbers near a round base, expand around that base. For 19 × 6, calculate 20 × 6 − 1 × 6 = 120 − 6 = 114. For 101 × 34, calculate 100 × 34 + 1 × 34 = 3,434.
Division
Look for a nearby multiplication fact. To compute 144 ÷ 12, recognize that 12 × 12 = 144, so the quotient is 12. For 735 ÷ 5, divide by 10 and double: 735 ÷ 10 = 73.5, then ×2 = 147. When a division does not come out evenly, separate the whole-number part from the remainder, such as 157 ÷ 12 = 13 remainder 1, because 12 × 13 = 156.
Percentages
Translate a percentage into a fraction of 100. Ten percent is one tenth; five percent is half of ten percent; one percent is one hundredth. For 18% of 225, calculate 10% (22.5) plus 5% (11.25) plus 3% (6.75), for a total of 40.5. Apple’s support documentation uses “What’s 18 percent of 225?” as an example of a percentage question for Siri.
For discounts, calculate the discount first and subtract it from the original price. A 15% discount on 80 is 12, so the sale price is 68. For an increase, add the percentage amount instead: a 15% increase on 80 is 80 + 12 = 92. For a percentage change, divide the change by the original value, then multiply by 100; keep the original value as the denominator.

Convert to a form that makes the operation easier. Half of 86 is 43; a quarter is half of a half, so one quarter of 86 is 21.5. To add 0.75 and 1.6, align place values: 1.60 + 0.75 = 2.35. For money, keep two decimal places while calculating and round only at the end unless a local rule requires rounding each item.

Ratios and per-unit amounts
Find the value for one unit before scaling up. If six items cost 18, one item costs 18 ÷ 6 = 3, so ten items cost 30 at the same rate. This method makes it easier to spot a misplaced zero or a reversed ratio.
Estimate first, then calculate exactly
An estimate is a guardrail, not a substitute for an exact result when the stakes are high. Round each number to a convenient value and predict the range. For 398 + 204, an estimate of 400 + 200 = 600 tells you the exact answer should be close to 600; the exact result is 602. If your calculator later shows 6,020, the estimate exposes a likely extra zero.
For multiplication, round both factors when you need a quick scale check. 49 × 21 is close to 50 × 20 = 1,000, so an exact result around 1,000 is plausible. For division, estimate the quotient by using nearby multiples. Estimation is particularly valuable before entering a long expression into any device.

Use the phone calculator as a quick fallback
Apple’s support guide states: “You can perform arithmetic calculations with a basic calculator.” On an iPhone, open the Calculator app and enter the expression for an exact result without creating a spreadsheet. The same guide documents additional modes and actions:
- Basic arithmetic: enter ordinary addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Scientific functions: switch to the scientific calculator when trigonometric, logarithmic, exponent, or other advanced functions are needed; the available interface can vary by iOS version.
- Unit and currency conversion: use the conversion capability for supported units or currencies rather than building a conversion table.
- Copying a result: copy the displayed answer when you need to paste it into a message, note, or form.
- Repeating the last operation: apply the previous operation again when the same calculation pattern continues.
- Siri questions: ask a percentage question such as “What’s 18 percent of 225?” when speaking is easier than typing.
Labels, available modes, and regional behavior can change with iOS updates. If a control is not visible, check the current Calculator or Siri interface on your device rather than assuming every version has the same layout.
A reliable calculator workflow
- State the operation in words. Decide whether you need a total, a difference, a percentage of a number, a percentage change, or a conversion.
- Estimate the answer. Round the inputs so you know the expected size.
- Enter one clear expression. Use parentheses when the order of operations matters, such as
(120 - 30) / 3. - Read the result with its unit. A bare “12” is ambiguous if the question involved dollars, minutes, kilograms, or miles.
- Check by reversing the operation. Multiply a quotient by its divisor, add a difference to the smaller value, or divide a product by one factor.
- Copy or record the result only if it will be used again. Otherwise, close the calculator and move on.
Voice input for hands-busy calculations
A voice-calculator app is another option when typing is inconvenient. The VoiceCalc App Store listing advertises spoken input for percentages and multi-step calculations. Treat those as listing claims: the listing does not establish independent testing, a permanent feature set, universal availability, or a fixed price.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
How to phrase a spoken calculation
- Say the complete expression, including the operation: “two hundred twenty-five times eighteen percent.”
- For a sequence, speak the intended order clearly: “start with 80, add 15, then divide by 5.”
- Repeat the result aloud and verify the units before acting on it.
- Use a visual calculator instead when the number is sensitive, the environment is noisy, or speech recognition could be misunderstood.
Voice entry is convenient, but it is not automatically more accurate or private than typing. Check the app’s current permissions, language support, availability, and pricing in its store listing before relying on it.

When a spreadsheet is actually the right choice
Skip the spreadsheet for a single result, but open one when the calculation has a data-management problem attached to it. A spreadsheet earns its setup time when you need to:
- apply the same formula to many rows;
- keep a calculation available for later editing;
- compare scenarios or categories side by side;
- combine arithmetic with sorting, filtering, or charting;
- show the inputs and formula to someone else for review;
- retain a dated record for budgeting, inventory, or another recurring task.
If you find yourself repeating the same mental calculation each day, that repetition is a signal to create a saved formula or template. The decision is about persistence and scale, not whether spreadsheets can perform basic arithmetic.

Adding the wrong place value
In 47 + 32, adding 47 + 3 instead of 47 + 30 produces a result that is too small by 27. Write or say the decomposition explicitly—47 + 30 + 2—when the numbers are easy to confuse.
Using the wrong percentage base
“18% of 225” uses 225 as the base. A percentage increase from 225 to another value uses 225 as the original denominator, while a percentage decrease from a new price may use a different base. Name the base before calculating.
Rounding too early
Rounding each intermediate result can accumulate error. Keep the exact cents, decimals, or fractions through the calculation and round once at the end unless the rule you are following explicitly requires intermediate rounding.

Ignoring units
Do not add quantities with incompatible units. Convert minutes to hours, grams to kilograms, or one currency to another before combining values. A calculator can produce a number even when the expression is conceptually invalid.
Trusting an implausible answer
Compare the result with your estimate and perform an inverse check. If 12 items at roughly 10 each produce an answer of 1,200, revisit the entry: the expected scale is closer to 120.
A short practice routine for faster mental arithmetic
Improvement comes from repeatedly simplifying ordinary problems, not from memorizing a single trick. Use a few minutes to practice:

- Choose five two-digit additions and split each addend into tens and units.
- Choose five subtractions and solve half by compensation around a round number.
- Choose products near a base such as 10, 20, 50, or 100 and expand or adjust around that base.
- Estimate every answer before checking it with a calculator.
- For each mistake, identify whether it came from place value, the operation, a percentage base, a unit conversion, or a transcription error.
The goal is not to avoid calculators at all costs. It is to make simple calculations require less setup and to recognize quickly when a result needs verification.
One-minute checklist
- Can I split the numbers into tens, units, or round chunks?
- Would compensation make one number easier?
- What is the expected size of the answer?
- Do the units match?
- Is this a one-off calculation, or will I need a saved table and repeated formula?
- Would a built-in calculator or Siri provide a safer check?
- If I use voice input, have I confirmed what the device heard?
For a small, one-time problem, decomposition is usually the shortest path: simplify, calculate the pieces, combine them, and check the scale. Escalate to the phone calculator when the expression becomes multi-step, and reserve a spreadsheet for work that needs persistence, repetition, or comparison.
