Advanced cross-browser testing is a risk-based, repeatable test matrix—not an attempt to run every browser, operating system, version, and device combination. Start with the browsers and devices your product supports and the user journeys that matter most. Reuse one automated suite across selected configurations, add visual comparisons for stable screens, and verify the actual environment whenever a platform-specific result matters.
Build a browser matrix around users and risk
Write down your supported configurations before choosing a test runner. Treat browser engine, branded browser, operating system, viewport or device class, and version policy as separate dimensions: a test labeled “Chrome” does not by itself describe the operating system or exact browser version.
Prioritize configurations that represent a distinct rendering engine or a meaningful user risk. For example, a team might select Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit for engine coverage, then add a branded browser or device profile when product support or a critical capability requires it. This is a planning approach, not a requirement imposed by Playwright. Do not run the full Cartesian product of every dimension by default; it can create a large, costly suite without proportionate coverage.
- List the browser and device classes your product promises to support.
- Rank them by user impact and the importance of the workflows performed there.
- Identify platform-sensitive features, such as behavior that may vary by operating system or browser implementation.
- Record which combinations are tested in routine CI and which receive targeted or scheduled coverage.
Reuse one suite with Playwright projects
Playwright projects let you run tests with different browser or device configurations while keeping common workflows in one suite. The documentation describes a project as a “logical group of tests running with the same configuration.” Projects can also represent environments such as staging and production, or states such as logged-in and logged-out users. Keep assertions shared when the expected behavior should be the same. Add a project-specific setting or assertion only when the product genuinely behaves differently on that platform. This keeps the suite understandable and helps distinguish a real compatibility issue from accidental divergence in test code.

Exercise critical journeys and browser-sensitive behavior
Run the workflows that would most affect users if they failed: navigation, authentication, forms, and payment flows where applicable. Add focused checks for capabilities your product depends on that may have differing platform implementations. These are useful planning examples, not a prescribed workflow list from Playwright.

Preserve the failure artifacts and exact environment details rather than immediately adding a broad workaround to shared test code.
Add visual regression checks selectively
Use screenshots for stable, high-value pages or components where a visible change matters. Avoid treating every page and transient state as a visual baseline: dynamic content can make comparisons noisy and harder to maintain.

Keep the operating system and browser versions consistent between a visual baseline and its comparison run. Playwright’s best practices recommend matching those environments for visual regression. Differences in fonts, rendering stacks, or browser versions can otherwise produce image changes that look like product regressions even when the application has not changed.
Keep runs current and failures diagnosable
Update Playwright and its browser binaries regularly, and retain enough metadata to reproduce a failure. Record the browser name and version, operating system, viewport or device profile, and relevant test artifacts alongside the result.

Do not assume Playwright’s Chromium build is identical to the latest branded Chrome or Edge release: its documentation notes that Chromium can be ahead of branded browser releases, and that some features vary by platform. If support for a branded browser or a particular OS version is important, test that environment deliberately rather than treating an engine label as a substitute.

Extend coverage beyond local machines when needed
Local automation is useful for repeatable engine coverage, but it may not provide every operating-system and browser combination your support policy calls for. A hosted browser service can fill that gap. BrowserStack documents supported Playwright browser and OS combinations; check its Playwright browser and OS support and confirm which environment a run actually selected.
That verification matters for mobile testing. BrowserStack warns that a mobile capability can fall back to regular mobile Chrome, so a successful run does not necessarily mean the requested platform was used. Treat emulated device profiles and actual device/OS coverage as distinct forms of evidence when the distinction is material.

Web Platform Tests is a cross-browser suite for testing web-platform behavior. It can help inform standards and implementation interoperability checks. It does not replace your application’s end-to-end tests or establish that your own login, checkout, or other user journeys work.

Does running Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit mean every browser is covered?
