Use Selenium WebDriver to put the application into a known state, then hand a screenshot at each deliberate checkpoint to a visual comparison layer that stores approved baselines and makes changes reviewable. Selenium drives the browser; the comparison workflow—not WebDriver alone—decides whether a visual difference is intentional or a regression.
What visual UI testing adds to Selenium
Functional tests can confirm that a button works or a page contains expected text without detecting that a layout has shifted, a control is obscured, or a style has regressed. Visual regression testing captures the rendered interface at selected states and compares each capture with an approved baseline. The first reviewed run commonly establishes that baseline; later differences need review before they are accepted. See the Selenium documentation for WebDriver’s browser-automation role and the visual regression testing overview for the general comparison workflow.
A dependable setup has three parts: stateful browser automation, repeatable screenshot capture, and a review process for differences. A baseline is a reference, not proof that the interface is correct: an unreviewed defect can be captured and preserved as the initial expected result.
Build the workflow around meaningful checkpoints
- Choose user-visible states. Select screens where appearance matters: an initial page, a menu or dialog after interaction, validation errors, loading or empty states, and responsive layouts relevant to your users.
- Drive the application with WebDriver. Navigate and interact as a user would. Capture only after the intended state is present, not simply after navigation has returned.
- Wait for a relevant condition. Use an explicit readiness condition that matches the interface—for example, a dialog becoming visible—rather than relying on a fixed delay when a state-based wait is available. Selenium’s documentation treats waits as a core WebDriver subject: WebDriver waits.
- Name checkpoints consistently. Use names that identify the page and state, such as
checkout-validation-error. Avoid duplicate names; Percy’s Python integration documents snapshot names as unique. - Compare and review. Inspect changes against the accepted baseline. Accept and save a new baseline only when the change is understood and intended; reject unexpected changes and investigate them.
- Run where it matters. Browser and viewport coverage should reflect the environments you support. Selenium Grid can distribute browser tests, but a capture in one browser is not evidence that every browser renders identically. See Selenium Grid.
Example: Selenium driving a Python test
The following runnable pattern demonstrates browser setup, a state-based wait, and a screenshot checkpoint using Selenium’s built-in screenshot method. It saves an image; it does not itself compare that image with a baseline or provide review. Connect the saved capture to your team’s chosen comparison layer to complete visual regression testing.

Install Selenium with python -m pip install selenium. Selenium Manager can manage browser drivers for supported setups; if browser startup fails, check that your installed browser and the driver-management configuration are compatible. Replace the example URL and selector with your own application and a condition that actually signals visual readiness. For a comparison product, use its documented Selenium integration and snapshot API rather than treating save_screenshot as a baseline system.
Make screenshots repeatable without hiding defects
Visual noise often comes from capturing different states, not from a faulty comparator. Keep test data, browser size, and application state controlled; wait for the relevant content; and decide explicitly how to handle animation, rotating content, timestamps, ads, maps, avatars, and other volatile regions. These are practical engineering controls, not a universal Selenium configuration recipe.

Use capture controls narrowly
Percy’s Python Selenium integration documents options including animation freezing, injected CSS, ignored-region selectors, and full-page capture. These are Percy-specific controls; confirm the package’s current requirements and behavior in its repository documentation. Ignore only small regions that genuinely cannot be made stable, and document why. Ignoring a region means the test no longer checks it, so masking a large area can conceal regressions.
Choose viewport, element, or full-page scope
A viewport screenshot shows the visible browser area. An element or region capture narrows attention to a component. A full-page capture includes content beyond the viewport, but may require special support, scrolling, or stitching. Sticky and floating elements can move during scrolling and produce artifacts in stitched images. Choose the scope deliberately and verify how the selected browser and capture tool implement it; full-page behavior is not interchangeable across tools. Applitools’ older screenshot help article illustrates the underlying caveat, while Percy documents a full_page option in its Selenium integration.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Baselines and change review
When a checkpoint is first captured, review it before adopting it as the reference. For each later difference, determine whether it is a deliberate product change, a defect, or capture noise. Save intentional baseline updates through the team’s normal change-review process so that the reason for the new reference is visible. Do not accept every changed image merely to make a suite pass.

Useful review questions include:
- Did the test reach the expected application state before capture?
- Is the difference consistent across repeated runs, or does it indicate unstable data or timing?
- Does the changed area affect a user-visible behavior or layout?
- If a region is excluded or styled for capture, is the exclusion narrow and documented?
When Selenium Grid or WebDriver BiDi matters
Use Grid when you need to distribute browser automation across machines or cover multiple browser environments. Treat each relevant browser and viewport as a distinct rendering check rather than assuming a single screenshot represents all of them. Selenium describes WebDriver BiDi as a newer bidirectional protocol using a WebSocket connection to stream browser events such as network requests, console messages, and JavaScript errors. Selenium says BiDi support is still being implemented while maintaining as much backwards compatibility as possible; it can help with event-aware automation and diagnostics, but it is not a prerequisite for screenshot comparison and the cited documentation does not establish a BiDi screenshot workflow. See Selenium WebDriver BiDi.
Choosing a visual comparison layer
Selenium does not prescribe a team’s baseline review policy or provide the whole visual-diff workflow. When evaluating a comparison service or integration, check its language and runner support, viewport and full-page behavior, element or region capture, animation and volatile-region controls, baseline approval flow, browser coverage, data-storage and privacy requirements, CI fit, and total cost. The documentation establishes these integration examples, not a neutral ranking or current price comparison.

Troubleshooting visual test failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Screenshot is blank or incomplete | The test captured before the relevant UI was ready, or the page failed to load. | Wait for a state-specific element; inspect browser and application errors; confirm the intended state is visible before capturing. |
| Differences appear on every run | Volatile content, animation, timing, or uncontrolled test data changes the image. | Stabilize the state and data first. If needed, apply a documented, narrow capture control such as animation freezing or an ignored region. |
| Full-page capture has displaced or duplicated elements | Scrolling and stitching interacted with sticky or floating UI, or the tool’s full-page behavior differs from expectations. | Try a viewport or targeted capture, or validate the selected tool’s full-page method in the target browser. |
| Snapshot is missing or cannot be matched to a baseline | Checkpoint naming may be absent, inconsistent, or duplicated. | Use stable, unique names for each page state and follow the comparison tool’s documented naming rules. |
| Browser does not start | Browser installation, driver setup, or environment configuration is incompatible. | Confirm the browser is installed and supported by the Selenium setup; inspect startup errors and driver-management configuration. |
| A baseline update makes the test pass but the page still looks wrong | An unexpected change was accepted without review. | Revisit the diff, restore the prior approved reference if appropriate, and investigate the underlying UI or capture-state change. |
