For a classic French manicure, pair a sheer pink or nude nail with a white free edge and a clear top coat. At home, the easiest beginner method is regular air-dry polish: prepare and shape your nails, add a base coat, paint the white tips, apply the sheer shade, then seal the manicure. Guide stickers can help make the smile line even, but they’re optional.
What you need
Gather the basics before you begin:
- Polish remover or a cleanser suitable for your existing polish
- A nail file
- Base coat
- White nail polish
- Sheer pink or nude nail polish
- Clear top coat
- Cotton or a small brush for cleanup
French-tip guide stickers or a fine detail brush are optional. Stickers create a physical boundary for the white edge; a detail brush gives you more control when drawing the curved smile line. How to do a French manicure with regular polish
1. Remove old polish and shape your nails
Start with clean, dry nails. Remove any old polish, then use a file to shape the free edges. Avoid cutting your cuticles: the American Academy of Dermatology Association says cuticles help protect the nails and surrounding skin from infection (AAD guidance on reducing nail damage).

Brush on a thin layer of base coat and let it dry as directed on the product label. A dry base makes it easier to apply the color layers neatly.

3. Paint the white smile line
Paint a narrow white arc across each free edge. If drawing the curve freehand feels difficult, place a French-tip guide sticker where you want the boundary, then paint the exposed edge. ORLY’s tutorial uses two coats of white and removes the sticker after painting; follow the polish label’s directions and allow the white layer to dry before continuing.
4. Add the sheer pink or nude shade
Once the white polish is dry, apply a sheer pink or nude layer over the nail. This creates the soft neutral base associated with the classic look.

5. Seal and tidy the manicure
Apply clear top coat and let the layers air-dry thoroughly before using your hands. For small smudges around the nail, use an appropriate remover with a fine brush or cotton swab. ORLY’s tutorial shows acetone and a brush for cleanup; use remover carefully and avoid getting it on the finished polish.
How to make the French tip line look even
- Use stickers for a defined edge. Place each guide at a similar height and angle before painting. Remove it after painting the white tip, as shown in ORLY’s tutorial.
- Use a detail brush for more control. OPI recommends a detail brush for drawing the smile line, which can help if you prefer to shape each curve by hand.
- Keep the curve narrow and consistent. A modest white arc is easier to repeat across nails than a deep, wide tip. Aim for a similar shape on each nail rather than trying to make every line mathematically identical.
- Let layers dry between steps. Moving on while white polish is wet can blur the edge when you apply the sheer shade or top coat.
Regular polish or gel: which should a beginner use?

Gel is not necessary to create a French manicure. The AAD says gel manicures can contribute to brittle, peeling, or cracked nails, and repeated use can increase the risk of skin cancer and premature skin aging on the hands. If you choose gel, its advice includes applying broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30+ sunscreen or wearing opaque fingertip-less gloves before curing, not picking off the polish, and limiting acetone contact during removal. If you choose an at-home gel system
Follow the instructions for the specific gel polish and compatible lamp you own. In its GELement system tutorial, OPI describes prepping and shaping the nails, then applying base, a neutral pink shade, white polish, and no-wipe top coat, curing each layer with its GELement LED lamp. OPI specifies 30-second curing intervals for that system, curing four fingers and then the thumb. Those timings apply to OPI’s described setup, not to gel products or lamps in general; use the curing directions supplied by your own manufacturers.
