To reduce dependence on the biggest U.S. companies, diversify in four directions: add companies of different sizes and sectors, include markets outside the United States, use assets such as high-quality bonds or cash for a different risk profile, and maintain the mix with a written rebalancing plan. Start by mapping your complete exposure—retirement accounts, taxable accounts, employer stock and overlapping funds—because several ETFs can still own the same mega-cap companies.

There is no universal percentage for international stocks, bonds or any other category. The appropriate mix depends on when you need the money, how much loss you can financially and emotionally withstand, your tax situation, fees and account rules. The framework below helps you make those decisions without trying to predict which market will lead next.

Why a portfolio of many funds can still be concentrated

Owning a long list of tickers is not the same as being diversified. Two broad-looking funds may hold the same largest companies, while a technology fund can duplicate the sector exposure already dominant in a U.S. large-cap index. Investor.gov cautions that narrowly focused mutual funds and ETFs do not necessarily diversify a portfolio.

Market-capitalization indexes also increase a company’s weight as its market value rises. When a handful of companies become unusually large, an index that follows market value assigns them a larger share. Vanguard’s Q2 2025 ETF Industry Perspectives says this is only one concentration issue: reducing large-company exposure inside the United States does not remove geographic home bias.

Vanguard’s figures illustrate the point without establishing a recommended allocation for everyone. Its Portfolio Analytics and Consulting team reported that the median client portfolio held 75% of its stocks in U.S. equities as of June 30, 2024. For comparison, MSCI data cited by Vanguard showed 63% U.S. equity exposure in global benchmarks as of March 31, 2025—a 12-percentage-point difference. The client figure covered 1,747 portfolios over the 12 months ended June 30, 2024; neither number describes all U.S. investors today.

Figure What it measures Date and qualification

Vanguard’s 2006–2022 segment-ranking chart likewise shows leadership moving among emerging markets, developed markets outside the U.S., U.S. large-cap stocks, U.S. mid- and small-cap stocks, and real estate. It demonstrates how difficult it is to identify the next winner; it is not a forecast.

Step 1: audit your actual exposure before adding anything

Use account statements, fund fact sheets and employer-plan records to build one household-level view. Include assets that are easy to overlook, such as restricted stock, options, a former employer’s shares, a concentrated taxable position, or a cash balance needed for a near-term goal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. List every holding and its market value. Record the account type, ticker or fund name, number of shares and approximate value. Note whether the account is taxable, tax-deferred or tax-free.
  2. Look through each fund. Capture its mandate, benchmark, geographic scope, sectors, company-size mix and largest holdings. A fund labeled “global” may include U.S. companies; a regional or country fund is narrower than a broad international fund.
  3. Group exposures. Add totals for U.S. large-cap, U.S. mid-cap, U.S. small-cap, international developed, emerging markets, bonds, cash and any alternatives. Also group by sector and investment style, such as growth or value.
  4. Identify duplicate top holdings. If several funds each list the same companies among their largest positions, treat that as one combined exposure when assessing concentration.
  5. Mark non-fund risks. Employer stock, a business you own, real estate, debt obligations and an emergency reserve affect how much investment risk your household can absorb.
  6. Write the purpose of each holding. Label it growth, diversification, income, stability, liquidity or automatic allocation. If you cannot explain a holding’s role, pause before buying more.

This inventory tells you what a new investment would actually add. A small-cap fund may broaden company size but leave you entirely U.S.-focused; an international fund may add countries while duplicating a global fund you already own; a sector fund may increase concentration rather than reduce it.

Four dimensions of diversification

Company and sector

Holding businesses from different industries reduces reliance on one company or economic driver. Broad-market funds generally spread exposure across sectors. A sector fund can be a deliberate satellite position, but its narrow mandate means it should not be described as portfolio-wide diversification by itself. Check sector weights and top holdings before deciding that a second fund is complementary.

Company size and investment style

Large-cap stocks dominate many market-cap indexes. Adding mid- or small-cap exposure changes the size mix and can introduce companies at different stages of development. A value-oriented fund changes style exposure relative to a growth-heavy portfolio. These segments can lag one another for long periods, so use them to meet a diversification objective rather than to chase the most recent leader.

Country and region

Companies outside the United States operate under different economic cycles, currencies, valuations, laws and political conditions. International exposure can therefore spread company and country risk, but it adds risks of its own. A broad international fund, a global fund, a developed-markets fund and a single-country fund are not interchangeable.

Asset class

Stocks, bonds and cash respond differently to growth, inflation, interest rates and market stress. Real estate, commodities, precious metals and private equity are additional categories some investors use, but each has category-specific risks and is not automatically safer. Diversification lowers reliance on one exposure; it cannot guarantee a gain or prevent a loss.

Broaden U.S. equity exposure

If your portfolio is dominated by the largest U.S. companies, a broad total-market approach can add smaller companies without abandoning U.S. stocks. Dedicated mid-cap or small-cap funds let you change the size mix more deliberately. A value or other style fund can address a style imbalance, but it may overlap with existing holdings.

Approach What it can add What it does not solve Checks before buying
Broad U.S. total-market fund Large-, mid- and small-company exposure in one mandate Country concentration; market-cap weighting may still favor the largest firms Benchmark, size distribution, top holdings and overlap
Dedicated mid-cap fund More exposure to medium-sized U.S. companies International or fixed-income diversification Definition of mid-cap, sector mix and duplication
Dedicated small-cap fund Smaller U.S. companies and a different size profile Potentially higher volatility and continued U.S. concentration Liquidity, volatility, benchmark and top holdings
Sector fund Intentional exposure to one industry Broad diversification; it can increase concentration Sector weight after purchase and role in the overall plan

Ask, “What exposure does this purchase add that I do not already have?” If the answer is only another wrapper around the same mega-cap holdings, it may not improve diversification.

Add international equities with eyes open

U.S.-registered international mutual funds and ETFs are common ways to invest outside the United States. In general:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • International funds usually invest outside the U.S.
  • Global funds may hold both U.S. and foreign companies, so they can overlap substantially with a U.S. fund.
  • Regional funds focus on an area such as Europe or Asia and are narrower.
  • Country funds concentrate on one nation and carry the greatest geographic concentration.
  • Emerging-markets funds invest in markets that may have different political, economic, currency and liquidity conditions from developed markets.

International investing introduces market risk plus currency-exchange and currency-control risk, political, economic and social uncertainty, different accounting and information access, potentially higher costs, less liquidity and different legal remedies. A falling foreign currency can reduce the value of a foreign investment measured in dollars even when the local share price rises.

Before selecting a fund, read the current prospectus and verify:

  • the benchmark and whether it covers developed markets, emerging markets or both;
  • the percentage invested outside the U.S. and any permitted U.S. holdings;
  • country, sector and company-size weights;
  • the largest holdings and overlap with your existing funds;
  • currency-hedging policy, if any;
  • expense and trading costs, account availability and tax-location constraints; and
  • how often the portfolio is reconstituted and rebalanced.

Do not assume a fund that recently outperformed will continue to do so. Vanguard’s historical rankings show that leadership rotated among U.S., non-U.S., emerging-market, size and real-estate segments from 2006 through 2022.

Use bonds and cash for a different risk profile

The SEC’s investor guide describes stocks as offering growth potential with substantial short-term volatility. Bonds are generally less volatile and offer more modest returns, although high-yield bonds carry elevated credit risk. Cash equivalents tend to have lower investment-loss risk but can lose purchasing power to inflation.

Asset class Potential portfolio role Important risks or limits
Stocks Long-term growth Large short-term price declines and company, sector and market risk
Investment-grade bonds Income, diversification and a potentially steadier experience than stocks Interest-rate, credit and inflation risk; prices can fall
High-yield bonds Higher income potential Greater default and equity-like risk than higher-quality bonds
Cash and cash equivalents Liquidity and near-term spending needs Inflation can erode purchasing power; returns may be low
Real estate, commodities or precious metals Possible exposure to different economic drivers Category-specific market, liquidity, price and implementation risks
Private equity Access to private-company investments for eligible investors Illiquidity, valuation uncertainty, fees and loss risk

Bonds do not always rise when stocks fall. Vanguard notes that bonds typically, but not always, go up when stock prices decline; correlations change with market conditions. Choose fixed income for the role it serves—stability, income or a known spending horizon—not as a guaranteed hedge.

Match the mix to your goal and risk capacity

Investor.gov’s asset-allocation guidance says allocation should reflect time horizon, risk tolerance and goals. Add two practical tests: ability to take risk (income stability, emergency savings, debt and when the money is needed) and willingness to take risk (how you react to losses). The lower of those two limits should guide the plan.

Short or fixed spending horizon

Money needed soon generally calls for liquidity and lower price volatility. Keep the amount and timing of withdrawals in view rather than investing near-term expenses in assets that could be sharply down when bills arrive.

Long accumulation horizon

A longer horizon may allow more stock exposure, but it does not remove the need for geographic, size and sector diversification. A long horizon is a reason to tolerate volatility, not a reason to ignore concentration.

Changing circumstances

Revisit the plan after a job change, inheritance, major purchase, retirement, debt change or shift in household income. An employer-stock position may make your overall finances more concentrated than your brokerage statement suggests.

Choose a maintenance method

One-fund lifecycle approach

Lifecycle or target-date funds are diversified mutual funds that automatically shift toward a more conservative mix as the target date approaches. The manager handles allocation, diversification and rebalancing. Funds with the same target year can still differ in glide path, stock allocation, holdings, strategy and costs, so compare those features rather than choosing by year alone.

Self-managed allocation

Write target ranges for each major exposure and specify how you will rebalance. A simple process is:

  1. Set a target mix based on goals, horizon, risk capacity and willingness to accept losses.
  2. Choose broad, complementary holdings that implement each role.
  3. Review the portfolio on a schedule, such as semiannually or annually, rather than reacting to daily prices.
  4. Rebalance when an allocation crosses a pre-set drift band or at the scheduled review.
  5. Direct new contributions toward underweight categories before selling appreciated assets when practical.
  6. Check taxes, transaction costs, account rules and wash-sale or other applicable restrictions with a qualified tax professional before trading in a taxable account.

The SEC describes rebalancing as restoring the chosen mix after one category grows faster than another. It tends to work best relatively infrequently. Do not abandon the plan simply because one segment has recently led performance.

Comparison axis Questions to answer
Exposure added Which countries, regions, company sizes, sectors and styles are new? Which top holdings overlap?
Portfolio role Is the holding intended for growth, diversification, income, stability, liquidity or automatic goal-date management?
Risk What market, currency, credit, interest-rate, duration, liquidity and inflation risks apply?
Breadth and mandate How many securities are held, what index is followed and how concentrated are the largest positions?
Cost and implementation What does the current prospectus say about expenses and trading costs? Is it available in your account and suitable for its tax location?
Maintenance How will weights drift, and who is responsible for rebalancing?

Current fund-level fees, yields and allocations change. Verify them in the prospectus and most recent holdings report instead of relying on an old comparison.

Common mistakes and practical fixes

Counting funds instead of exposures

Problem: Five funds all own the same largest companies. Fix: consolidate look-through holdings and sector weights before adding another fund.

Assuming “global” means “non-U.S.”

Problem: A global fund includes U.S. stocks and may duplicate your domestic fund. Fix: read the geographic mandate and current country weights.

Using a single-country or sector fund as the core

Problem: A narrow fund creates a new concentration. Fix: use broad exposure for the core and reserve narrow funds for a deliberate, size-limited role you can explain.

Chasing the recent winner

Problem: Buying the segment with the best recent return can lead to repeated turnover and unintended risk. Fix: set an allocation based on your plan and rebalance to it.

Expecting bonds to eliminate losses

Problem: Interest-rate, credit and inflation shocks can push bond prices down, and bonds do not always move opposite stocks. Fix: match bond quality, duration and liquidity to the job the money must perform.

Ignoring taxes and account constraints

Problem: A theoretically efficient trade creates an avoidable tax bill or violates a plan rule. Fix: consider contribution routing, account location and tax consequences before selling, and obtain jurisdiction-specific advice where needed.

Decision paths for typical situations

Mostly U.S. mega-cap funds, long horizon

First map overlap. A broad U.S. total-market holding can add mid- and small-cap companies, while a broad international allocation can address country concentration. Decide whether your risk capacity supports the resulting stock volatility before adding bonds.

U.S. stocks plus a large cash balance for a near-term goal

Separate the money needed soon from long-term assets. Preserve liquidity for the near-term goal, then diversify the long-term portion across company sizes, countries and, where appropriate, bonds.

Several funds but no written target

Stop adding products. Define each holding’s role, choose target ranges, document drift thresholds and establish a review date. A target-date fund may be simpler if you prefer one professionally managed allocation.

Large employer-stock position

Treat the shares as part of total household exposure, not as an isolated account. Review concentration, vesting and tax rules, and create a gradual risk-reduction plan that fits your circumstances.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What diversification can and cannot do

Investor.gov summarizes the concept as: “Diversification is a strategy that can be neatly summed up as: ‘Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.’” Vanguard’s Principles for Investing Success adds: “Although broad market diversification cannot insure an investor against losses, it can help guard against unnecessarily large losses.” Those statements describe risk management, not a promise of positive returns.

A diversified portfolio can underperform a concentrated winner during a particular period. Its purpose is to avoid making one company, one sector, one country or one asset class solely responsible for meeting your goals. Review the full exposure, keep the plan aligned with your horizon and capacity for loss, and rebalance deliberately rather than reacting to headlines.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I invest internationally?

There is no evidence-based percentage that fits every investor. Base the decision on your existing U.S. exposure, goals, horizon, risk capacity, tax situation and the geographic scope of the fund you are considering. Vanguard’s 75% and 63% figures describe specific datasets and dates, not a recommended allocation.

Do I need bonds if I already own several stock funds?

Stock funds diversify companies, sectors or countries but remain one asset class. Bonds or cash may provide different volatility and liquidity characteristics, although they carry interest-rate, credit and inflation risks and do not always rise when stocks fall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a target-date fund automatically diversified enough?

It is designed to provide diversified allocation and automatic rebalancing, but funds with the same target year differ. Check the glide path, current holdings, stock and bond mix, geographic exposure and costs before investing.
