How to Diversify Agricultural Investments Across Fertilizer, Grain, and Farm Equipment

Diversify by the business or contract exposure you actually hold—not by counting “fertilizer,” “grain,” and “equipment” as three automatically independent bets. Input suppliers, grain-related investments, and machinery makers can respond differently to the agricultural cycle, but they may still share risks such as farm income, weather, crop yields, financing, and policy. Compare the instrument, its drivers, and its overlap with your other holdings before treating it as diversification.

What each agricultural investment actually exposes you to

The label on an investment does not tell you whether you own a company, a commodity-linked contract, or an interest in a fund using contracts. Those structures can have different rights, return drivers, and risks.

Exposure What the investment may represent Distinctive considerations
Fertilizer and crop inputs Shares in companies that sell or distribute inputs, or in integrated agribusinesses that also handle grain. Business results can depend on input supply and pricing, as well as farmers’ ability and willingness to buy. An integrated company may combine input and grain activities rather than isolate either exposure. The Andersons’ 2025 Investor Day presentation describes both fertilizer and crop-input activities and grain handling, storage, and merchandising.
Grain Commodity-linked contracts or funds, or shares in grain handlers and merchandisers. A contract-based product is not the same as owning physical grain. A grain operating company is exposed to business activities such as handling, storage, logistics, and merchandising, not just the market price of a crop. The CFTC’s commodity ETP advisory explains that commodity products can differ from traditional stock and bond funds and may not track a commodity’s long-term price.
Farm equipment Shares in machinery manufacturers, rather than direct ownership of a particular crop or its price. Demand for equipment is cyclical and is affected by farm economics, financing, and other agricultural conditions, as well as company-specific factors. AGCO’s 2025 annual report discusses these influences.

Fertilizer and crop-input businesses

Input exposure can come from a specialist seller or distributor, or from a company with several businesses across the agricultural value chain. The latter may spread revenue across activities, but it does not establish that those activities will offset one another when the agricultural cycle weakens.

As a company-specific illustration—not an industry estimate—The Andersons reported selling approximately 1.9 million tons of fertilizer for the year ended December 31, 2024, in its 2025 Investor Day presentation.

Grain: contracts, funds, and operating companies

Grain exposure varies substantially by route. Futures and options are market contracts; some exchange-traded products and funds use commodity interests; grain handlers and merchandisers are operating businesses. A futures-based fund is not ownership of grain in storage. Futures contracts expire, and positions must be handled through closeout, offset, or delivery arrangements; rolling a position can also affect a fund’s results. The CFTC advisory cautions that a commodity product may not track the underlying commodity over time.

USDA’s Economic Research Service reported in 2020, using 2016 survey data, that nearly 50,000 U.S. farms used futures or options contracts and that more than 90 percent of those contracts were for corn or soybeans. This describes farmers’ historical risk-management use; it is not a count of investors or evidence that contracts produced investment returns. USDA ERS explains the findings and the role of these tools in farm marketing.

Farm-equipment companies

An equipment-maker investment is company equity exposure. Its results can reflect demand for machinery and the financial condition of farms, alongside company execution, product mix, and geographic exposure. AGCO identifies factors including farm income, land values and debt, financing costs, commodity prices, acreage, yields, input costs, policy, and weather in its 2025 annual report.

How to assess whether a mix is diversified

Use these checks to distinguish genuinely different exposures from several holdings tied to the same underlying cycle. They are a comparison framework, not a suggested allocation.

  1. Identify the return driver. Ask whether a holding is primarily linked to grain prices, fertilizer supply and demand, equipment replacement demand, or the earnings of a diversified agribusiness. A broad company may span multiple activities, so its name alone may not reveal its exposure.
  2. Identify the instrument and what it gives you. Separate company shares, direct futures or options, commodity-linked funds, and physical commodities. Read the fund’s prospectus or contract terms to understand how exposure is obtained and what can happen at expiry; commodity contracts do not confer indefinite ownership. The CFTC advisory describes differences between commodity products and traditional funds.
  3. Map shared drivers. Consider whether weather, yields, crop prices, or farm income could affect several holdings at once. A crop-price move can influence farmers’ purchasing decisions, while yields and weather affect crop supply; the USDA ERS overview of agricultural risk and AGCO’s annual report describe relevant farm and business exposures.
  4. Check liquidity and financing needs. Understand whether you can meet cash needs during an adverse move and whether a position entails leverage or margin requirements. USDA ERS identifies liquidity and leverage as risk-management considerations; its article on farmers’ use of futures and options also notes the expertise and time involved in using these tools.
  5. Look through concentration. Check exposure by company, crop, geography, instrument, and value-chain activity. Two different securities may still depend on the same crop, customers, or farm conditions; an integrated agribusiness may combine several of these risks within one holding.
  6. Match the exposure to the purpose and capacity for loss. A producer’s hedge is intended to manage operating risk; a speculative commodity position seeks market exposure; a long-horizon investment in a company depends on business performance. These objectives are not interchangeable.

Why three agricultural labels can still move together

Agricultural exposures can share sources of risk even when their immediate businesses differ. USDA ERS groups farm risks into production, price or market, financial, institutional, and human or personal categories. Its examples include weather, pests and disease; commodity and input prices; interest rates and credit availability; and government decisions. See USDA ERS’s risk framework and its discussion of risk-management strategies.

For example, a poor crop outcome can affect grain supply and farm finances; weaker farm economics can, in turn, influence purchases of inputs and machinery. These links do not mean all holdings will respond identically, but they are reasons not to assume that owning one position in each category eliminates common-cycle risk. USDA ERS notes that diversification works through activities whose incomes do not move in perfect correlation; it is not a guarantee that losses in one will be offset by another.

Instrument-specific risks remain important. The CFTC warns against assuming a commodity pool will outperform stock and bond funds during downturns or track a commodity’s long-term price. Contract expiry and rolling positions can shape results, which differ from those of an equipment-company share or an operating business. Review the relevant CFTC guidance and the product’s current disclosures before investing.

What this framework can—and cannot—tell you

Comparing fertilizer, grain, and equipment exposures can help reveal what drives a portfolio and where its risks overlap. It cannot, by itself, identify suitable securities, determine a suitable allocation, or predict returns. A farm producer deciding how to manage operating risks faces a different decision from an investor seeking long-term company exposure or taking a commodity position.
