If Nvidia or AMD has grown into a large part of your investments, diversification starts with measuring your exposure across every account—not with swapping one semiconductor stock for another. List your direct shares and the Nvidia or AMD exposure inside funds and workplace plans, choose a stock, bond and cash mix that fits your time horizon and ability to tolerate losses, then redirect risk across asset classes, industries, companies and, where appropriate, regions.
There is no SEC-prescribed percentage that every investor should keep in NVDA or AMD. The right decision depends on your goals, time horizon, liquidity needs, risk tolerance, taxes and the rest of your financial picture. Diversification can reduce portfolio risk, but it cannot guarantee gains or prevent losses.

Why an Nvidia- or AMD-heavy portfolio is concentrated
Concentration means that a large share of your portfolio depends on one company, one industry or another narrow investment exposure. If that exposure falls, the effect on your total wealth can be much larger than the effect of a similar decline in a diversified portfolio.

Moving money from one semiconductor company to another may therefore leave much of the original risk in place.

The SEC’s Investor.gov guidance describes diversification in two dimensions: between asset categories and within each category. A portfolio can hold many stocks yet remain concentrated if those stocks are in the same industry or respond to the same economic forces. Diversification is intended to lower overall portfolio risk; it does not ensure a profit or eliminate the possibility of loss.
Look beyond the brokerage account
“Heavy” should describe your complete investable picture, not just one account screen. Include taxable accounts, individual retirement accounts, workplace plans, inherited assets and other investment accounts that you control. A broad-looking fund can own Nvidia or AMD, so direct shares may understate your actual company exposure.
Employer stock, restricted shares and stock received as compensation deserve separate attention because selling may involve vesting rules, trading windows, withholding or tax consequences. Treat those holdings as part of the same portfolio review rather than as a separate exception.
How do I diversify a portfolio that is heavy in Nvidia or AMD stock?
Use the following sequence as a framework. It is a decision process, not a fixed sell order or a universal allocation formula.
1. Build a complete exposure map
- Gather statements from every account. Record the security, number of shares, current value, account type and whether the holding is direct or inside a fund. Include cash and bonds, not only equities.
- Open each fund’s current holdings page or prospectus. Note the percentage in Nvidia, AMD and other large positions, the largest industry weights, geographic mix and whether the fund is a broad-market, sector, thematic or single-country product. Holdings change, so use the most recent information available from the fund provider.
- Calculate each exposure as a share of investable assets. A simple calculation is
position value ÷ total investable assets × 100. For a fund, multiply your fund value by the fund’s Nvidia or AMD weight to estimate the look-through exposure, then add that amount to your direct shares. - Separate overlapping risks. Group holdings by company, industry, asset class and region. Several funds may own the same large companies, and several technology holdings may move together even when their names differ.
| Item to record | Why it matters | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Direct Nvidia or AMD shares | Shows your visible single-company exposure | Brokerage or plan statement |
| Fund exposure to Nvidia or AMD | Reveals concentration hidden inside pooled investments | Fund holdings file, fact sheet or prospectus |
| Industry weights | Shows whether several holdings share semiconductor or technology risk | Fund classification and holdings data |
| Asset-class mix | Shows how much of the portfolio depends on equities versus bonds or cash | Account statements and fund descriptions |
| Account and tax status | Determines which transactions may create taxes or plan restrictions | Brokerage, plan and tax records |
Use values from the same date when possible. Market prices move continually, so your percentages are a snapshot rather than a permanent label.
2. Set the portfolio’s risk boundaries before choosing replacements
Asset allocation should follow your time horizon and risk tolerance, two factors emphasized in the SEC’s asset-allocation education. Your time horizon is when you expect to need the money; your risk tolerance is how much market decline you are willing to accept. Also consider your capacity to withstand a loss, upcoming withdrawals, income stability, emergency reserves and other assets that are not in the investment account.

Decide what role the money has. Funds needed soon for a known expense generally cannot be exposed to the same level of share-price volatility as money intended for a distant goal. A long horizon may allow more time to recover from a decline, but it does not make a concentrated company position diversified.
Write down the stock, bond and cash mix you can maintain through both rising and falling markets. This statement is more useful than choosing a target solely because a particular stock has recently performed well. If your circumstances change—such as a new withdrawal need, job change or change in risk capacity—revisit the mix.
3. Diversify the equity portion on more than one axis
Once you know how much equity risk fits your plan, spread that equity exposure across companies, industries and potentially geographic markets. The aim is to avoid replacing one narrow dependence with another.
- Company breadth: Compare how many holdings a vehicle owns, how much its largest positions represent and whether one company can materially drive its result.
- Industry breadth: Check whether the portfolio is balanced across sectors or remains dominated by semiconductors, technology or another single industry.
- Geographic breadth: Consider whether all equity exposure depends on one country or market. Foreign investments add their own currency, political and market risks, so they should be judged against your overall plan.
- Asset-class breadth: Stocks are only one asset category. Bonds and cash have different return and liquidity characteristics, although they also carry risks such as interest-rate, credit and inflation risk.
Compare every candidate by breadth of holdings, overlap with your current Nvidia and AMD exposure, concentration by company and industry, asset class, costs and fit with your time horizon and risk tolerance. Costs are an important comparison axis, but there is no current fee figure established here; read the specific fund’s expense information before investing.
4. Decide whether a pooled vehicle fits the job
Mutual funds, index funds and exchange-traded funds pool many securities and can make it easier to obtain broad exposure. The SEC identifies these vehicles as tools that can support diversification and asset allocation. They are not automatically diversified: a sector fund, thematic fund or concentrated index can still have substantial exposure to a small group of companies.

5. Create a rebalancing method
Rebalancing means bringing the portfolio back toward the allocation your plan calls for after market movements or deposits change its weights. Choose the method before trading:
- New contributions: Direct future contributions toward underrepresented asset classes or industries, when your account rules allow it.
- Partial sales: Sell only enough of an oversized position to move toward your chosen allocation. The amount should come from your written plan, not from a universal NVDA or AMD rule.
- Exchange or rebalance inside a tax-advantaged plan: A workplace or retirement account may have different trading and tax rules from a taxable account. Check the plan’s terms.
- Review schedule: Set a calendar review or a predefined drift threshold. A rule reduces the chance that a dramatic market move, rather than your plan, determines when you act.
Before placing an order, check bid-ask spreads, commissions or other transaction charges that apply to your account. Also consider whether selling an appreciated position creates a taxable gain.
6. Handle taxes and special restrictions before selling
The tax result depends on your jurisdiction, account type, holding period, cost basis, income and the rules that apply to employer or restricted stock. A sale can also interact with loss harvesting, estimated payments or plan limits. The SEC education cited here does not calculate an individual tax outcome.

Depending on individual circumstances, investors may discuss staged sales or charitable transfers with those professionals, but neither approach is suitable for everyone and neither should be treated as a universal recommendation.
How much of my portfolio should I keep in NVDA or AMD?
No single percentage applies to every investor. The appropriate position size follows from your time horizon, risk tolerance, liquidity needs, tax situation and the exposure already present elsewhere. The SEC’s allocation guidance does not establish an Nvidia or AMD cap.
Use these questions to set a personal boundary:
- How much of your total investable wealth would be affected by a severe decline in one company?
- Would a large fall force you to delay a planned withdrawal or change your lifestyle?
- How much of the same company or industry appears inside your funds and workplace plan?
- Are you holding the shares because they serve a written long-term role, or because selling feels difficult after a price increase?
- Can you continue following a rebalancing rule during a period of sharp volatility?
After answering, document a maximum or target range that is specific to your plan and review it when your circumstances change. Avoid treating a limit used by another investor, adviser or online calculator as an appropriate limit for you.

Do index funds or ETFs help diversify a concentrated stock portfolio?
They can, when their holdings add genuine breadth that your portfolio lacks. A broad pooled vehicle may spread exposure across many companies and industries in one purchase. But the label “index,” “ETF” or “mutual fund” does not tell you whether the fund is broad enough for your purpose.

|---|---|---|
| Broad-market index fund | Can provide exposure to many companies and industries | Largest holdings, Nvidia/AMD weights, sector concentration, index methodology and costs |
| Sector or thematic fund | Adds a focused industry or theme | May increase rather than reduce semiconductor or technology concentration |
| Actively managed mutual fund | May hold a varied portfolio selected by a manager | Current holdings, manager mandate, turnover, concentration and fees |
| Exchange-traded fund | Offers pooled exposure traded during market hours | Holdings, spread, structure, trading costs and overlap with existing funds |
| Bond or cash vehicle | Can change the portfolio’s asset-class mix and liquidity profile | Credit quality, maturity, interest-rate sensitivity, inflation impact and access to funds |
Look through each vehicle rather than counting fund names. If a broad fund and a technology fund both hold the same companies, their combined exposure may be much narrower than the number of line items suggests. Compare the resulting portfolio—not each fund in isolation—with your intended asset allocation.
Illustrative review: finding hidden concentration
Consider a hypothetical investor who owns direct Nvidia shares, a broad equity fund and a technology-sector fund. The investor initially sees three separate holdings. The exposure map shows that both funds also own Nvidia and that the sector fund has many semiconductor and technology positions.
- The investor calculates direct Nvidia value plus the estimated Nvidia amounts inside both funds.
- They group the remaining holdings by industry and discover that the funds overlap beyond Nvidia.
- They define the stock, bond and cash mix required for their goal and note the date when the money may be needed.
- They compare a broader equity option, a less concentrated existing fund and non-equity assets for overlap, breadth, costs and tax consequences.
- They choose a rebalancing method, verify the tax basis and plan rules, and set a review date.
This example demonstrates the process only. It does not establish what the investor should sell, what allocation is suitable or what percentage belongs in either company.
Common mistakes when reducing single-company concentration
Swapping Nvidia or AMD for a similar semiconductor stock
A different ticker can still expose you to the same industry cycle, customers, supply chain and market sentiment. Examine the underlying economic drivers, not just the company name.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIgnoring fund overlap
Adding a broad fund without checking its holdings may leave your direct-company exposure almost unchanged. Use the fund’s current holdings and weightings in your calculations.
Best Value
Choosing a fund by label alone
“Index,” “ETF” and “diversified” are not substitutes for reading a fund’s concentration, methodology and costs. A focused fund may be useful for a deliberate satellite allocation, but it should not be assumed to solve concentration.
Selling without a tax and trading plan
Taxable gains, spreads, commissions and account restrictions can change the practical result of a rebalance. Obtain account-specific information before placing orders.
Using a universal percentage
A number that fits one person’s horizon and risk capacity may be unsuitable for another. Base the boundary on your complete financial picture and document why it fits.
Letting recent performance set the allocation
Past gains can make a position occupy more of the portfolio without any deliberate decision. Rebalance according to the plan you wrote, not an assumption that recent market leadership will continue.
Failing to maintain the plan
Concentration can return as prices move or as new contributions go to the same holdings. A scheduled review and a defined drift rule make the process repeatable.
A practical checklist before your next trade
- Have you listed every investment account and included workplace holdings?
- Have you estimated Nvidia and AMD exposure inside each fund?
- Have you grouped holdings by company, industry, asset class and region?
- Have you written down your goal, time horizon, liquidity needs and ability to withstand losses?
- Does the proposed replacement reduce concentration rather than merely change the ticker?
- Have you checked current holdings, weighting method, costs and overlap for each pooled vehicle?
- Have you reviewed cost basis, tax consequences, trading charges and plan restrictions?
- Have you set a rebalancing method and a date or drift rule for the next review?
What the SEC guidance does—and does not—decide for you
Investor.gov’s “Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing” states that “A diversified portfolio should be diversified at two levels: between asset categories and within asset categories.” An SEC Investor Bulletin dated March 31, 2026, similarly defines diversification as investing in a variety of assets to lower overall portfolio risk.
Those principles explain why an Nvidia- or AMD-heavy portfolio warrants a whole-portfolio review. They do not provide a personal sell instruction, a valuation view on either company, a guaranteed number of holdings or a tax answer. Your implementation still requires current fund documents, account information and, where needed, qualified tax or financial advice.
