Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhen one stock has risen enough to dominate your portfolio, treat the change in weighting as a new risk decision—not as proof that you must sell everything. Recalculate the stock’s direct and indirect share of your investable assets, compare it with your goals, time horizon and ability to tolerate losses, then examine diversification options and the tax lots you would sell. Broad exposure can reduce dependence on one company, but a fund’s label alone does not guarantee diversification.
For a US taxable brokerage account, the practical sequence is: map concentration and fund overlap, inspect basis and specific lots, compare the tax and trading effects of selling now versus over time or redirecting new contributions, and document a rebalancing rule you can follow. US federal tax guidance does not determine your state tax or personal outcome, so material decisions may warrant individualized advice.

Why a run-up can create a concentration problem
Your portfolio weights can change even when you do nothing. If one holding appreciates much faster than the rest, it becomes a larger percentage of the account. The SEC’s Investor.gov asset-allocation guidance notes that market movements can make an allocation drift from its intended mix, which is why investors periodically rebalance.
Consider an illustrative, not predictive, example: a stock worth $20,000 rises to $60,000 while the rest of a portfolio remains at $80,000. The stock has not been sold or bought, yet it now represents 43% of the $140,000 portfolio instead of 20% of the original $100,000. The dollar gain is welcome; the portfolio’s dependence on that company is a separate question.

Concentration has several layers. You may own the company directly, through an employer plan, or indirectly inside mutual funds and ETFs. A large position can also create sector concentration: a technology company and several technology-sector funds may rise and fall for related reasons. The relevant exposure is the combined economic sensitivity, not just the ticker shown on your brokerage statement.
Investor.gov summarizes the principle this way: “Diversification is a strategy that can be neatly summed up as: ‘Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.’” Diversification cannot prevent losses or guarantee a profit, but it can reduce the effect of one company, industry or asset class on the whole portfolio.
Step 1: Measure the exposure you actually have
Use investable assets, not one account in isolation
List taxable brokerage accounts, retirement plans, employer stock, savings earmarked for investing and any other assets whose value affects your financial plan. Include indirect holdings when you can identify them. If an employer plan or fund does not disclose current positions, mark that exposure as uncertain rather than assuming it is zero.

Set a target from circumstances, not a universal percentage
There is no single concentration limit established by the SEC or IRS that fits every investor. A person with a long time horizon, a secure income and a high tolerance for losses may make a different choice from someone who needs the money soon or whose job already depends on the same company.
Write down:
- What the money is for and when it may be needed.
- How much temporary or permanent loss you could tolerate without abandoning the plan.
- Whether your salary, bonus, pension or benefits are tied to the company or sector.
- Which asset categories you intend to hold, such as stocks, bonds and cash equivalents.
- Whether the account is taxable or tax-advantaged and whether withdrawals are imminent.
This statement of purpose is a decision reference, not a promise that a particular allocation will be safe.

Step 2: Find overlap before choosing a replacement
Owning several funds does not automatically diversify a portfolio. Two funds can hold many of the same large companies, or both can concentrate in one sector. Review each fund’s current holdings, sector weights and asset-class description in its prospectus and shareholder report. Holdings change, so use the most recent documents available when you make the decision.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Overlap to check | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Company | Does the proposed fund own the stock you are trying to reduce? How large is that position? | A sale of direct shares may leave substantial exposure in the fund. |
| Sector and industry | Do current and proposed funds emphasize the same sector or industry? | Related businesses can be affected by the same economic and regulatory shocks. |
| Asset class | Are the holdings equities, bonds, cash instruments, real assets or another category? | Changing companies within one asset class may not change overall portfolio behavior much. |
| Geography | Is exposure limited to one country or spread across markets? | Country-specific economic, currency and political risks can remain concentrated. |
| Employer and personal exposure | Does your job, compensation or other account depend on the same company or sector? | Portfolio diversification cannot fully offset a simultaneous income shock. |
Do not infer diversification from a fund name alone. Investor.gov explains that mutual funds and ETFs can make it easier to own many securities, yet a narrow fund may hold a small slice of the market. Some ETFs track a single stock, so the fund wrapper itself is not evidence of broad exposure.
Step 3: Compare possible diversification building blocks
Compare each candidate by breadth, overlap, fees, trading costs, role in your allocation, fit with your time horizon and risk tolerance, and taxable-account distributions. The comparison below describes functions, not recommendations for a particular product.
| Vehicle or approach | Potential role | Checks and limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Broad-market mutual fund or ETF | Spreads exposure across many companies and, depending on the fund, sectors and countries. | Verify the index, current holdings, sector weights, expense ratio, turnover and distributions. It may still have meaningful exposure to the company you own. |
| Fund covering a different asset class | Adds exposure outside the original stock category, such as high-quality bonds or cash-oriented holdings. | Assess interest-rate, credit, inflation and liquidity risks; a different label does not make an asset risk-free. |
| International or total-market fund | Can broaden geographic or company coverage beyond a single domestic sector. | Review currency, country, emerging-market, tax and overlap characteristics. |
| Sector fund | Expresses a deliberate sector tilt or fills a specific gap. | Often adds little diversification when the original company and existing funds already share that sector. |
| Single-stock or very narrow ETF | Provides targeted exposure or a trading tool. | It can preserve or increase single-company concentration and should not be treated as a broad substitute. |
An index fund generally seeks to track a basket of stocks and bonds, according to Investor.gov’s introduction to investing. Tracking a broad basket can simplify diversification, but the index methodology and holdings determine what you actually own.
Look beyond the expense ratio
Record the fund’s stated fees, bid-ask spread and any account trading charge. A low expense ratio does not compensate for an unsuitable concentration or a tax cost that dominates the decision. Conversely, a slightly higher-cost holding may serve a distinct asset-allocation role. Compare like with like and note whether a quoted fee is current and recurring.

Assemble your records
- Download the broker’s lot-level report for the concentrated stock and check it against your own purchase records.
- For each lot, record purchase date, number of shares, purchase price and any acquisition costs. IRS guidance generally treats purchase price plus acquisition costs as basis, subject to adjustments.
- Note corporate actions such as splits, mergers, reinvested dividends or transfers that may have changed basis.
- Identify which lots you would sell and ask the broker how the order will be designated. Save the confirmation and year-end tax forms.
If you adequately identify the shares sold, the selected lots determine the basis used for those shares. If you cannot adequately identify them, the IRS says the first-in, first-out method generally applies. Broker default settings vary, so confirm the instruction before submitting an order rather than assuming the default is optimal.
Separate tax questions from allocation questions
A low-basis lot may create a larger realized gain but reduce concentration more efficiently. A high-basis lot may realize less gain but leave more company exposure. Compare the portfolio effect and the tax effect together. Do not let an unrealized gain, by itself, dictate a holding period if the concentration conflicts with your ability to tolerate risk; likewise, do not assume selling immediately is always best.
For a material transaction, a qualified tax professional can evaluate your complete federal and state circumstances. IRS publications and instructions govern filing, but they cannot substitute for advice based on your records.

Step 5: Choose a rebalancing path to evaluate
There is no source-supported universal percentage to sell or universal timetable. The following are alternatives to model against your target allocation and tax-lot information.
| Path | How it works | Trade-offs to examine |
|---|---|---|
| Sell and reallocate now | Sell selected lots and purchase the underweighted holdings in one plan. | Restores the intended mix quickly, but may realize a large gain and incur trading costs at once. |
| Phased sales | Sell portions on a schedule you define, reviewing the portfolio after each phase. | Can spread realized gains and decision points, but leaves concentration and market risk during the phase-in. It does not guarantee a lower tax bill or better price. |
| Redirect new contributions | Stop adding to the concentrated position and direct new money to underweighted assets. | May reduce the relative weight without selling, but it can be slow if contributions are small compared with the position. |
| Combination | Sell selected high- or low-basis lots while directing new contributions elsewhere. | Allows more control over exposure and cash flow, yet requires careful records and monitoring. |
Investor.gov describes calendar-based and threshold-based rebalancing. A calendar method reviews on a regular schedule; a threshold method reviews when an allocation moves a chosen distance from its target. The SEC notes that rebalancing tends to work best relatively infrequently. Whichever method you consider, write the trigger and the permitted action before market volatility tests your resolve.
Fund distributions can create tax even when you do not sell
A mutual fund or ETF may distribute dividends or capital gains to shareholders. The IRS explains that a shareholder can receive a Form 1099-DIV reporting a capital gain distribution even without selling any fund shares: the fund may have sold securities inside its portfolio and passed the resulting gain through to shareholders.

Before buying a fund in a taxable account, check its prospectus, shareholder report and distribution information. Look for the fund’s distribution history, turnover-related information, expense ratio and current holdings. A distribution can occur after your purchase, so the timing of your trade matters even though the fund’s underlying sale happened inside the fund.

ETF structure may reduce capital-gain distributions compared with similar mutual funds through in-kind transactions, as described by Investor.gov. It does not eliminate taxes, and it does not make an ETF automatically suitable. Investor.gov’s April 1, 2025 discussion of mutual funds and ETFs states that there is no tax difference between the two in a tax-advantaged account; the taxable-account distribution issue is therefore a different consideration from the account’s withdrawal rules.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Rebalancing costs and implementation details
Every trade can involve a bid-ask spread, commission or other transaction charge, and selling can create taxes. Fund exchanges may also have short-term trading policies or account-specific fees. Read the broker’s order preview and the fund’s prospectus before placing an order.
Use an order of operations
- Freeze new purchases of the concentrated stock unless they are part of an intentional, documented plan.
- Update the exposure worksheet, including direct shares and known indirect holdings.
- Choose the target mix based on goals, time horizon and loss tolerance.
- List candidate funds or securities and compare holdings, fees, spreads, distributions and overlap.
- Rank stock lots by basis, holding period and the exposure reduction each sale would provide.
- Model the immediate, phased and contribution-only paths, including estimated trading costs and taxable events.
- Confirm the broker’s lot-selection method, settlement details and cash destination.
- Place trades only after checking the order type, price and account.
- Save confirmations, update the allocation worksheet and review the result on your chosen schedule.
Do not use a market order or a recurring purchase merely because it is convenient if you have not checked the price, spread or resulting allocation. A written process reduces accidental concentration and makes later reviews more consistent.
Common situations and how to reason through them
“The stock is still rising, so selling feels premature.”
Future performance is unknowable. The relevant decision is whether the current weight is appropriate for your plan if the price falls sharply, not whether the recent trend will continue. Recalculate the effect of a severe decline on both the account and your income situation.
“I own several funds, so I must already be diversified.”
Check the holdings. Multiple funds can own the same companies or the same sector. Replace assumptions based on fund count with a look-through view of company, sector, asset-class and geographic exposure.
Best Value
“Selling would create a large gain.”
Identify specific lots and compare a complete sale, a partial sale, phased sales and contribution redirection. A tax estimate should include holding periods and state considerations that the general federal guidance here does not resolve.
“I moved into an ETF, so there cannot be a tax issue.”
ETFs can distribute taxable income and gains in a taxable account, even if their structure may reduce some capital-gain distributions relative to similar mutual funds. Confirm the fund’s actual distribution policy and remember that a single-stock ETF can preserve concentration.
“My employer plan contains the same company.”
Include that position in the exposure calculation. If the plan offers limited choices, document the uncertainty and evaluate whether other accounts or future contributions can reduce the combined dependence.
A review checklist you can keep with your portfolio file
- Current direct shares, market value and percentage of investable assets.
- Known indirect company and sector exposure in each fund and employer plan.
- Goal, time horizon, income dependence and tolerance for losses.
- Target asset categories and the reason each category is included.
- Candidate holdings’ breadth, overlap, fees, trading costs and distribution records.
- Tax-lot dates, basis, holding periods and broker identification instructions.
- Estimated transaction costs and taxable events for each rebalancing path.
- Chosen calendar or threshold review rule and the date of the next review.
- Trade confirmations, updated statements and tax forms retained for your records.
Revisit the worksheet after major purchases, sales, employer-plan changes or a large market move. A review is a prompt to compare the current portfolio with the plan; it is not an instruction to trade every time prices change.
What this process can and cannot do
Diversification can spread company-specific risk across holdings and asset categories, but it cannot remove market risk, guarantee a gain or determine the right allocation for an individual. Tax treatment depends on facts such as basis, holding period, account type, income and jurisdiction. The SEC and IRS materials cited above provide general US guidance, not individualized investment or tax advice. If the concentrated position is large relative to your finances, obtain advice from professionals who can review your complete situation before executing an irreversible transaction.
