Owning the camera footage alone may not be enough: a song playing in the background, a clip, or other third-party material can still be claimed.
First, distinguish a live interruption from an archived-video claim
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects a match, it may show a warning; if the material remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. That is separate from a Content ID claim on the archived recording: YouTube says such claims are made after the live stream ends if you choose to archive the video. The ordinary Content ID dispute process applies to that archived video.

A Content ID claim is not automatically a copyright strike. A claim can affect a video by monetizing it, tracking it, or blocking it, depending on the claim. A copyright removal request is a different process; if it results in removal, the video may be subject to a strike.

- Footage: Did you record the images yourself, or does the segment include someone else’s recording or a broadcast?
- Audio: Is there background music, a song, or other audio you did not create or license?
- Other material: Does the segment contain clips, overlays, or other third-party content?
- Rights and permissions: Do you have the necessary rights for each matched element and for the relevant use?
If third-party content is licensed for a livestream, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist to help prevent live interruption. Owning a copy of a song or video, giving credit, or choosing not to monetize does not by itself establish a valid basis for disputing a claim.
Dispute an active claim in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, open Content and find the archived livestream.
- Under the video’s restrictions, locate the Copyright claim and open See details.
- Review the matched content, claimant, and claim effect. Confirm that the claim concerns material for which you have a sound basis to dispute.
- Select Take action, then Dispute. Labels and the exact flow can vary between desktop and app interfaces.
- Choose the reason that accurately applies and explain the facts clearly. Do not claim rights you do not have or rely only on credit, possession of a copy, or lack of monetization.
- Keep relevant records, such as original camera files, project files, dated recordings, licenses, permissions, and correspondence. These are practical records to retain; YouTube’s cited dispute guidance does not prescribe a particular evidence package.
- Check the claim status in Studio and respond to any available next step based on the outcome.
YouTube says the claimant has 30 days to respond to an initial dispute. YouTube also says it cannot decide whether you should dispute a claim; proceed only if you are confident you have a valid basis and the necessary rights.

Choose the next step based on the claim’s status
| What happened | Possible next step | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| The archived video has an active Content ID claim | Dispute it if the match is mistaken or you have a valid rights or copyright-exception basis; otherwise consider another available resolution, such as removing the claimed content. | A dispute is not the same as an appeal or a counter notification. |
| The initial dispute was rejected | Review whether an appeal is available and decide whether to use it. | The claimant has seven days to respond to an appeal. An appeal may carry greater risk than an initial dispute. |
| The claim blocks the video and Studio offers “Escalate to Appeal” | Some creators may be able to skip the initial dispute stage and appeal directly. | This gives the claimant seven days to respond, but rejection can lead the claimant to request removal. |
| The video was removed after a copyright removal request | Consider whether a counter notification is appropriate. | This is a legal request, not the ordinary way to contest an active Content ID claim. |
Appeal and counter notification are not interchangeable
Appeal after a rejected dispute
If YouTube makes an appeal option available after a rejected dispute, assess the claim and your supporting basis again before proceeding. The claimant has seven days to respond. For some blocking claims, YouTube may offer Escalate to Appeal, which skips the initial dispute stage. Because a rejected appeal can prompt a removal request, do not treat the faster route as a routine shortcut.
Counter notification after removal
YouTube describes a counter notification as a legal request to reinstate content removed because of a copyright removal request. It is not the normal dispute button for a still-active Content ID claim. YouTube requires legal statements, a full legal name and contact information, and a signature; it shares the counter notification with the claimant. After a valid counter notification is forwarded, the claimant has 10 US business days to provide evidence of legal action to keep the content down. Consider legal advice if you are unsure whether this step is appropriate.

What happens to revenue while a claim is disputed?
For an eligible monetized video, YouTube may hold revenue while a claim is disputed and pay it to the appropriate party after resolution. If you dispute within five days of the claim, the hold begins from the claim date. If you dispute later, it begins when you file the dispute. This timing concerns revenue handling; it does not establish that a dispute is valid.
Common problems and what to do
- “I recorded it myself, so why is there a claim?” The claim may concern audio or another element captured in your footage. Check the matched segment and determine whether you have rights to all of it.
- The music was only in the background. Background placement does not by itself establish permission or a copyright exception. Check whether you have the necessary rights or another sound basis to dispute; otherwise consider an available resolution such as removing the claimed content.
- You have a license, but the livestream was interrupted. Ask the rights owner whether your channel needs to be added to its Content ID allowlist for the licensed live content.
- You are unsure whether your use qualifies for a copyright exception. That depends on the facts and applicable law; YouTube’s claim workflow does not decide that question for you. Consider legal advice before escalating.
- You are looking at a strike or removal rather than a claim. Confirm the notice type and follow the process that applies. A counter notification is relevant only after removal following a copyright removal request, not as a substitute for disputing an active Content ID claim.
