Use await browser.disconnect() to detach Puppeteer while leaving the browser running; use await browser.close() to shut down the browser and its pages. To clean up just one isolated browser context, call await context.close().
Choose cleanup by what should remain open

For the usual meaning of “dispose of a Puppeteer connection,” choose disconnect() if Chrome or another browser must keep running, and close() if the browser session is finished. Puppeteer’s browser management guide likewise distinguishes disconnecting from closing: disconnecting does not shut down the browser or close its pages. The guide is labeled Next, so check the documentation for your installed Puppeteer version if behavior or availability is version-sensitive. Puppeteer browser management

Disconnect and reconnect later
Save the browser’s WebSocket endpoint before disconnecting. A later Puppeteer client can connect to that endpoint and close the browser when its work is complete:

Close a context without closing the browser
Use a separate browser context when a task needs isolated pages and you want to discard that task’s context afterward. Close it when the work is done:

Use the lifecycle method, not the lower-level connection API
Puppeteer’s Connection.dispose() reference describes a synchronous void method, but does not establish it as the normal application-level cleanup call. For ordinary application cleanup, use the Browser or BrowserContext method that matches the resource you intend to close. The Connection reference is labeled version 25.3.0. Troubleshoot cleanup that seems to do the wrong thing
- The browser keeps running after cleanup: that is the expected result of
browser.disconnect(). If the browser should stop, callawait browser.close()instead. - Pages remain open after disconnecting: also expected. Disconnect removes Puppeteer’s connection; it does not close pages. Use
browser.close()to close the browser and associated pages. - Closing a context fails or is not appropriate: confirm that it is a separately created context, not the default browser context. Close a non-default context with
await context.close(); usebrowser.close()if the entire browser should shut down. - You are considering
Connection.dispose(): its reference only establishes a synchronous low-level API, not an application cleanup pattern. Prefer the documented browser lifecycle methods above.
