Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

The grid decides how cards fit; srcset and sizes help the browser choose an image file for each card’s displayed width.
Build a grid that adapts to its container
For a directory with a changing number of entries, CSS Grid can create as many columns as fit while maintaining a minimum card width. This example uses a 16rem minimum where space permits, a 1rem gap, and a single column when the container is narrower than that minimum.
<ul class="directory">
<li class="site-card">
<a href="https://example.com/">
<img
src="/images/example-640.jpg"
srcset="/images/example-320.jpg 320w,
/images/example-640.jpg 640w,
/images/example-960.jpg 960w"
sizes="(min-width: 70rem) 20rem,
(min-width: 42rem) 30vw,
calc(100vw - 2rem)"
width="960"
height="600"
alt="Example site's home page"
>
<span>Example</span>
</a>
</li>
</ul>
.directory {
display: grid;
grid-template-columns: repeat(auto-fit, minmax(min(100%, 16rem), 1fr));
gap: 1rem;
list-style: none;
padding: 0;
}
.site-card img {
display: block;
width: 100%;
height: auto;
aspect-ratio: 8 / 5;
object-fit: cover;
object-position: center;
}
Adjust the minimum card width, gap, page gutters, and breakpoints for the actual design. The sizes values shown are examples, not universal breakpoints: they should describe the card’s likely CSS width at each layout size.
Choose whether thumbnails crop or show the whole image
The example gives every thumbnail an 8:5 box. With object-fit: cover, the image fills that box and excess content is cropped. This creates consistent card geometry, but inspect the result: a crop can remove important page content. Set object-position to move the visible focal area—for example, object-position: top when the top of a page screenshot matters most.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use object-fit: contain when the entire screenshot or logo must remain visible. It may leave unused space inside the box; give the image or its wrapper a deliberate background color if that space would otherwise look accidental. Avoid forcing both width and height in a way that stretches the image. A fixed-ratio box combined with object-fit preserves the intended treatment.
Match source files to the displayed thumbnail size
CSS determines the image’s rendered size. HTML’s width-descriptor srcset supplies alternative files, and sizes tells the browser the expected CSS slot width under layout conditions. The browser can use those hints to select a suitable candidate; sizes does not set the displayed dimensions. Keep src as a fallback. See MDN’s responsive images guide.

Offer multiple width candidates when you have image derivatives at materially different sizes. The candidate widths should reflect the actual pixel widths of those files, and the sizes conditions should account for the grid, gaps, and page gutters. Incorrect slot hints can lead the browser to choose an unnecessarily large file or one that looks soft at the rendered size.
Use <picture> when you need art direction, such as a deliberately different crop for a particular condition, or when choosing among formats with fallbacks. For ordinary resolution selection of the same composition, srcset and sizes are usually the more direct tools. See web.dev’s Images guide.

Reserve image space and load at the right time
Set accurate width and height attributes based on the source image’s intrinsic dimensions or representative ratio. The image can still be fluid with width: 100%; the attributes give the browser a ratio to reserve space before the bytes arrive, reducing layout movement. In the example, 960 by 600 describes the 8:5 source ratio.
Use loading="lazy" for directory thumbnails meaningfully below the initial viewport. Do not automatically lazy-load a prominent image near the top: delaying it can make important content appear later. For important imagery, eager loading and a high fetch priority may be appropriate. See web.dev’s responsive images guidance.

Give thumbnails useful alternative text
Decide what the image contributes in the context of the linked card. If the screenshot communicates information not present in the adjacent link text, describe that information in alt. If the visible card text already identifies the destination and the thumbnail adds no information, use alt="" to mark it as decorative. Do not omit the attribute, and avoid repeating the destination name unless that repetition helps. The right wording depends on the card’s purpose.
Common implementation problems
- Columns overflow on narrow screens: allow the minimum track to shrink with
minmax(min(100%, 16rem), 1fr), or choose a smaller minimum suited to the container. - Thumbnails look stretched: avoid a forced fixed height without a fitting rule. Use a known aspect ratio and select
coverorcontain. - Important content disappears in the crop: switch to
containor adjustobject-position; check representative screenshots, not just one tile. - Images download at an unnecessarily large size: check that each
srcsetwidth matches its actual file and thatsizesreflects the card width after the grid’s gaps and page gutters. - Cards shift as thumbnails load: provide accurate
widthandheightattributes and keep the CSS ratio consistent with the source. - Below-fold entries load too early, or the lead image appears late: lazy-load only images outside the initial viewport; do not apply lazy loading indiscriminately.
