Switch Windows 11 to a 12-hour clock
- Open Settings.
- Go to Time & language > Language & region.
- Expand Regional format, then select Change formats.
- Open the Short time menu.
- Select a format showing an AM/PM marker, such as a pattern equivalent to
h:mm tt.
The taskbar clock normally uses the short-time pattern. If you also want longer time displays to use 12-hour notation, choose a 12-hour option under Long time as well.

Switch Windows 11 to a 24-hour clock
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Expand Regional format and select Change formats.
- Under Short time, select a pattern that does not show AM/PM.
- Optionally select a matching 24-hour pattern under Long time.
A 24-hour pattern displays hours from 00 through 23, so 1:00 PM appears as 13:00. The exact punctuation and whether seconds are shown depend on the available pattern.
Short time versus Long time
| Setting | Typical purpose | What to choose |

| Long time | Displays that use a longer time pattern, sometimes including seconds | Choose the matching 12-hour or 24-hour style if consistency matters |
Changing these patterns changes how Windows formats the time. It does not change the actual time, date, or time zone.

Do not confuse time format with time zone
To change the location whose local time Windows uses, go to Settings > Time & language > Date & time and adjust Time zone. A time-zone change can alter the displayed hour, but it does not switch between 12-hour and 24-hour notation. Format choices belong under Language & region.
Show or hide the taskbar clock
Clock visibility is a separate control. Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time, then use Show time and date in the System tray. Microsoft states that the date and time are shown in the taskbar system tray by default. Hiding or restoring this control does not change the selected time pattern.

If the 12-hour or 24-hour choice is missing
Check the correct menu
Make sure you are in Language & region > Regional format > Change formats, rather than only the Date & time page. Check both Short time and Long time; they can offer separate choices.
Use the classic Region dialog
Windows 11 releases can present regional controls differently. If Settings does not expose the pattern you need, open Control Panel > Region, select the Formats tab, and inspect Short time. The dialog’s Additional settings area may allow a custom time pattern. This is a fallback, not a guarantee that every missing-choice problem will be resolved.

Refresh an application
Some applications keep their own time-format preference or loaded the previous Windows setting. Check the application’s settings and close and reopen it after changing the Windows regional format.
Check whether the clock is merely hidden
If no clock appears on the taskbar, verify Show time and date in the System tray before troubleshooting the format itself.

Quick rule for choosing a pattern
- AM/PM visible: 12-hour notation.
- No AM/PM visible: 24-hour notation.
- Need consistent longer displays: change Long time too.
- Need a different local hour: change Time zone under Date & time, not Regional format.
