To show the current sermon title, update the live broadcast’s title in YouTube Studio for the watch page, and add a separate text or graphic overlay in OBS if you want the title visible over the video. These are independent: changing YouTube metadata does not put text on the picture, and changing an OBS overlay does not change YouTube’s watch-page title.
First identify which title you need to change
- YouTube watch-page title: Appears around the player and in YouTube surfaces. Edit it in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- On-screen sermon title: Appears over the video itself. Add it as a source in the scene your encoder sends, such as an OBS text source or browser source.
A church may use both. Before editing, determine whether the service is a scheduled broadcast or part of an already-live, continuously running broadcast, and make sure the signed-in account has permission to edit it. YouTube’s documented workflow covers streams managed through Live Control Room; it does not establish one universal procedure for every kind of always-on setup.

Change the YouTube watch-page title
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room.
- Select the correct scheduled or current stream, then open its stream settings or metadata controls.
- Edit the title to include the sermon name and any service identification your church wants viewers to see.
- Review the title in Live Control Room or on the watch page before the service begins.
YouTube documents metadata editing during stream creation, from stream settings, or while scheduling. If you reuse a previous stream, check the copied title: YouTube says reuse copies metadata, settings, and the stream key, and the new stream can be edited after creation. Treat the stream key as sensitive; YouTube describes it as the credential that tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Do not put it in a public document or overlay.
Put the sermon title on the video in OBS
Type the title into a text source
- In OBS, select the scene used for the broadcast and add a text source.
- Enter the current sermon title, then position and size the source as a lower-third or other title treatment.
- Check spelling and confirm the source is visible in the active scene and in the outgoing preview.
OBS text sources can render text in a stream or recording layout. For a one-off title, editing the source before the service is the simplest workflow.
#1 Best Overall
Read the title from a text file
- Open the OBS text source’s properties and enable its “Read from file” option.
- Choose a plain text file for the title.
- When the sermon title changes, have the designated operator update that file and verify the revised text in the active scene.
This avoids reopening source properties for each change, but someone still needs to maintain the file. OBS documents that the source reads displayed text from the file instead of its text property.
Use a browser source for a designed graphic
Add an OBS browser source and point it to a local HTML graphic or a URL that displays the title treatment. Browser sources show web content in an OBS scene. The person responsible for the overlay page or file must keep its title current; a browser source does not automatically update YouTube’s broadcast metadata.

Automate changes to YouTube metadata with the API
A developer-maintained integration can use Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API liveBroadcasts.update operation to set snippet.title. It requires OAuth authorization. The API documentation also requires fields in the submitted broadcast resource and warns that a writable property omitted from an update can be deleted. An integration should identify the right live broadcast and preserve the required and current fields rather than send a partial resource copied from an example without checking its effects.

An API update changes broadcast metadata; it does not render a title over the encoded video. Use an OBS source or another graphics system for the on-screen title.
Choose a workflow that fits the church
| Decision | Simpler approach | More automated or designed approach | Choose based on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where the title appears | YouTube metadata only | YouTube metadata plus a separate OBS overlay | Whether viewers need the title visible over the picture |
| Updating the overlay | Manually edit OBS text | Read from a maintained text file or use a browser overlay | Volunteer skills and who owns the weekly update |
| Updating YouTube’s title | Edit in Live Control Room | Use a developer-maintained Live Streaming API integration | Service frequency, technical support, and need for automation |
Service-day checks and common problems
- Wrong title on YouTube: Confirm you selected the intended current or scheduled broadcast. If it was reused, inspect its copied metadata and edit the new stream.
- Title is on YouTube but not over the picture: The watch-page title is metadata, not a video graphic. Add or enable the OBS overlay source in the scene being sent.
- Overlay is missing or stale: Confirm the correct OBS scene is active, the source is visible, and—if it reads from a file—the operator edited the file the source uses.
- API update removes or changes other metadata: Review the full broadcast resource and the API’s update requirements. A partial update can delete an omitted writable property.
- Stream preview is wrong or unstable: Preview in Live Control Room and monitor audio and video during the event, as YouTube’s streaming tips recommend.
If the encoder uses RTMPS, retrieve the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and use an encoder that supports it. YouTube defines RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL; see its streaming tips.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the church wants an uploaded recording or playlist to keep a YouTube channel live continuously, StreamNeo runs that playback in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload the video or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera, and it does not change the sermon title in YouTube metadata or create an OBS overlay. Start the free first day.
