To show the current kirtan track inside your live video, add an OBS text source that reads a title file updated by the player or a metadata helper. This on-screen overlay is different from changing the YouTube video’s title field: the YouTube Live Streaming API can update that metadata, but it does not draw text over the video.
Choose where the title should appear
| Approach | What viewers see | What it needs | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS text overlay fed by player metadata or a file | The title rendered in the video image | A title source or integration, an OBS text source, and updates when tracks change | Showing each kirtan title during playback |
| YouTube Live Streaming API title update | The YouTube video’s title metadata | An authorized API client and broadcast update logic | Changing the video listing title as the broadcast changes |
| Manual text editing | Depends on whether you edit an overlay or YouTube metadata | An operator to make changes at track transitions | Occasional updates or a low-automation program |
If viewers should read the song name without opening the video details, use an in-picture overlay. Changing the YouTube title field is not a substitute.

Show the current song title in an OBS overlay
1. Find the actual playback source
Identify what is playing the kirtan audio: an OBS VLC Video Source, an external VLC player, another media player, or a separate streaming or automation system. The overlay can only show a current title if that playback setup exposes track metadata or provides another dependable way to identify the item.
2. Get a changing title into a text file
Use an integration that reads the actual playback source and writes the current title to a file. OBS community resources describe two possibilities: Now Playing To File can write media-session fields to files when information changes, and VLC Now Playing Monitor monitors VLC metadata and can export it to a text file.

These are community tools, not official guarantees for every operating system, player version, or unattended 24/7 arrangement. Check the resource’s current instructions and confirm that it detects the player you actually use. A tool can only report what the player or track metadata makes available; it cannot reliably infer an accurate title from missing or incorrect tags.
3. Add the file as an OBS text source
- In OBS, open the scene used for the live stream and add a Text source.
- Enable the source’s read-from-file option and select the title file generated by your helper. The OBS community resource Now Playing To File describes this setup.
- Set the font, size, color, and placement so the title is legible without covering important video content. Preview it in the scene before going live.
The overlay is part of the encoded picture. Viewers see only the text OBS renders, not the file or the helper that supplies it.

4. Test transitions and recovery before leaving it unattended
Test several tracks, including one with no title tags, and check what happens when playback is paused or stopped. Restart the player and OBS to verify whether the helper resumes updates and the text source continues reading the file. These are operational checks to perform on your own setup; the community documentation does not establish that any particular combination will recover automatically in a 24/7 stream.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose a fallback for tracks without usable metadata. A consistent filename convention or a manually maintained title is better than presenting an old title as if it were current. Make sure the displayed text changes at the track transition you intend viewers to see.

Use VLC playlists when they fit your playback setup
OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes a VLC Video Source that can play playlists and loop them. VLC must be installed for that source, and the source has a loop-playlist option; see the OBS Media Sources guide. Playlist looping and title display are separate jobs: the playlist can keep playing while the overlay still needs a working metadata path to identify the current track.
Update the YouTube video title field instead
If by “now playing title” you mean the title shown in YouTube’s video listing or watch-page metadata, use the YouTube Live Streaming API. Its liveBroadcasts.update method can update snippet.title for a broadcast, which represents one YouTube video. This changes video metadata, not the pixels in the stream.

API updates require authorized access with a YouTube scope. The update method documentation says the request body requires an ID and scheduled start time. It also warns that when an update specifies a property group in part, existing values in that group omitted from the request body can be deleted. Preserve the required and existing fields deliberately when constructing updates; do not send a title-only body without accounting for the method’s update behavior.

Keep the metadata dependable
- Check the tags: the title is only as accurate as the media metadata or naming convention feeding it.
- Check the update path: confirm that the helper notices track changes and that OBS reads the generated file.
- Check failure states: decide what the overlay should show when the player stops, tags are missing, or a helper fails.
- Check rights separately: displaying a title does not establish that you have permission to broadcast the recording. Verify the rights for the specific recording and intended use.
Troubleshooting a now-playing overlay
The text never changes
Check that the player is exposing the current item, that the helper is monitoring the correct player or media session, and that it is updating the same file selected by the OBS text source. If the player’s metadata does not change with the playlist, the overlay has no current title to display.

The text is blank or incorrect
Inspect the current track’s tags and the helper’s output file. Missing, malformed, or stale metadata can produce a blank or misleading overlay. Use a maintained filename convention or manual title as a fallback rather than leaving viewers with an unverified title.
The overlay works until OBS or the player restarts
Test the restart sequence: confirm that the player starts, the helper reconnects or resumes monitoring, the output file is available, and the OBS source still points to it. The cited community resources do not promise recovery for every 24/7 configuration, so validate your own setup before relying on it unattended.
The YouTube title changes, but the picture does not
That is expected when you update broadcast metadata. To place the track name inside the video, use an OBS text overlay sourced from the current playback title.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your priority is keeping a pre-recorded kirtan stream live without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for YouTube streams. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not go live from a camera. This can keep the stream running without OBS or your home connection staying on, but it does not create a now-playing overlay from your track metadata.
