Before moving from one wetland to another, scrub mud and vegetation from boots, nets, buckets, and other field gear, then apply a locally accepted disinfectant for its full contact time. The updated 2022 NEPARC protocol lists 1.6% sodium hypochlorite for at least five minutes when broader pathogen coverage, including Bsal, is needed. Disinfect well away from natural water, rinse with clean water, and let equipment dry where practical. Follow local agency rules and the product label.
Why clean equipment between wetland sites
Chytrid fungi can spread between sites through infected water and direct contact with frogs. Wet or muddy footwear, tyres, and survey equipment may also contribute. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service notes that Bd is not airborne but can be carried on reused contaminated gear such as boots and frog nets. Cleaning and disinfecting between sites reduces that pathway; it does not replace other site-specific biosecurity measures.

NSW environment guidance recommends cleaning and drying equipment and wet or muddy footwear before and between frog sites. The Australian disease strategy also says procedures should account for site risk, habitat, worker safety, environmental impact, legal requirements, and the availability of an approved and effective disinfectant. Some programs may use dedicated gear for different sites as an additional barrier, not as a substitute for required cleaning and disinfection.

Field workflow: clean, disinfect, rinse, dry
- Prepare before leaving the site. Carry brushes or other cleaning utensils, gloves, disinfectant, an applicator or container, and clean rinse water. NSW guidance specifically recommends carrying cleaning utensils and disinfectant when visiting frog habitats.
- Remove visible mud and vegetation. Brush debris from boots, nets, buckets, and other equipment before applying disinfectant. Organic material can reduce disinfection effectiveness, so do not treat a muddy surface as ready for disinfection.
- Apply disinfectant to every relevant surface. Keep surfaces wet or immersed for the full contact time specified by the chosen protocol and product instructions. Use the active concentration required by that protocol; household bleach strengths vary, so do not assume a dilution without checking the product’s sodium hypochlorite concentration.
- Disinfect far from natural water. The 2022 NEPARC protocol specifies at least 150 feet from lakes, streams, and ponds. Chemical disinfectants can harm aquatic organisms, including invertebrates and tadpoles; carry chemicals away for disposal rather than letting them enter a wetland or drain into it.
- Rinse and dry. Rinse treated gear with clean water to limit material damage and prevent disinfectant residue from reaching the next wetland. Allow items to air-dry completely where practical.

Disinfectant concentrations and contact times in NEPARC 2022
These are minimums listed in NEPARC Publication 2022-02, not universal rules; local requirements and product labels take priority. Concentration means the working disinfectant concentration, not a percentage of an unspecified household product.

| Disinfectant | Minimum working concentration | Minimum contact time | Important compatibility and safety notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sodium hypochlorite (bleach) | 1.6% | At least 5 minutes | Check stock strength and calculate dilution accordingly. NEPARC warns that it can harm people, is fatal to amphibians at high concentrations, corrodes metals, fades colors, and breaks down fibers. Organic material and sunlight can inactivate it. |
| Potassium peroxymonosulfate | 1.0% | At least 2 minutes | NEPARC prefers it over bleach for fabric and metals. It may pit galvanized or soft metal if not rinsed, and the protocol notes irritation and eye-damage hazards. |
| Ethanol | 70% | At least 1 minute | Listed for delicate equipment. It is flammable, evaporates, may damage rubber or plastic and deteriorate glues, and can harm amphibians at high concentrations. |

Choosing the right protocol for the pathogens and gear
For broader coverage that includes Bsal
Use the 2022 NEPARC table as a reference when Bsal coverage is relevant: it lists 1.6% sodium hypochlorite with at least five minutes of contact time. A 2023 USGS review explains that the revised bleach concentration is about ten times stronger than the older NEPARC guidance because the stronger level is needed for Bsal effectiveness. Confirm that the protocol is accepted by the responsible agency for your site and that the chemical is compatible with your equipment.

A prior NEPARC document recommended 3% bleach for Bd and most ranaviruses, with a five-minute field contact time. That is an older protocol and should not be combined with the newer Bsal-focused concentration as though the recommendations were interchangeable. A National Park Service page gives a local National Capital Region example of a greater-than-10% bleach solution between sites; that regional wording is not a universal instruction, and it should not be confused with the active sodium hypochlorite percentage.

When bleach is a poor fit for equipment
NEPARC identifies potassium peroxymonosulfate as preferable to bleach for fabric and metals, while warning about possible pitting of galvanized or soft metals if it is not rinsed. It lists 70% ethanol for delicate equipment but notes flammability and potential damage to rubber, plastic, and glues. These options still require attention to contact time, product instructions, worker safety, and material compatibility.
