Recommended Free Tools
The most reliable way to discover unfamiliar video game franchises is to search by the things you enjoy—genre, mood, mechanics, theme and creator—rather than by publisher size. Combine store filters, creator pages, human-curated showcases and playable demos, then verify availability on the platform and in the region where you play.
This approach works for released games and upcoming projects. Steam offers the broadest set of search and recommendation tools; Nintendo, PlayStation and Xbox provide curated channels for independent releases. None is comprehensive, and “indie” is each platform’s own label rather than a guarantee that a game comes from a tiny studio or represents a brand-new franchise.

What “new franchise” means in this guide
A franchise can be new to you without being newly announced. You may have missed an earlier game, overlooked a series from a small studio, or encountered a debut that has not yet become a household name. The discovery methods below cover all three situations:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Released but unfamiliar: games already available in a store that you have not played.
- Upcoming: announced projects that you can follow, wishlist or try through a demo.
- Series discovery: finding a creator’s other games after one title catches your attention.
The official platform pages describe tools and showcases, not guaranteed hit rates. An algorithm can repeatedly surface games that resemble your past activity, while a curated list can omit excellent titles outside its editorial focus. Treat every route as a way to build a shortlist, not as proof that a game is popular, high quality or genuinely independent.

Choose a discovery route that fits your situation
| Route | Best for | Timing | How you discover games | Try-before-buy option | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam search and recommendations | PC players who want a broad catalog | Released and upcoming | Tags, descriptive searches, personalized suggestions, curator recommendations and the Discovery Queue | Some individual store pages offer demos | Recommendations reflect available catalog data and your activity; they are not a complete map of smaller studios |
| Steam creator pages | Players who liked one game and want related work | Released and announced releases | Developer or publisher pages, series listings and creator follows | Depends on each title | A creator may have a mixed catalog, and following does not mean every future project will match your taste |
| Steam Next Fest | PC players willing to test upcoming games | Upcoming | A temporary event built around demos and developer visibility | Playable demos are the central feature | It is time-limited; event dates and participating games change |
| Nintendo Indie World | Switch owners who prefer a curated shortlist | Released and upcoming | Official presentations and lists focused on independent games | Check the linked Nintendo eShop page for each title | Catalog, release status and demos vary by region |
| PlayStation Indies | PlayStation players looking for selected independent games | Released and upcoming | Editorial features, game pages and selected spotlights | The program includes downloadable demos for some games | The page is a selection, not the full PlayStation catalog; store details can change |
| ID@Xbox | Xbox players browsing independent releases | Released and upcoming | Indie game listings and selected games playable through Game Pass | Check the current store listing or subscription catalog | Game Pass inclusion and regional availability are not universal |
Use open catalog search when you want breadth, creator pages when you want continuity, showcases when you want a manageable shortlist and events when a demo lowers the risk of trying an unreleased game. The table describes practical differences in format; it is not a measured ranking of which route finds the best games.
Start with your taste, not a publisher name
Before opening a store, write down two or three elements you already enjoy. Be specific enough to search, but not so narrow that you reproduce the same blockbuster series. Useful starting points include:
- Genre: turn-based tactics, immersive simulation, deck-building roguelike, life simulation or narrative adventure.
- Mood: cozy, tense, melancholic, comic, mysterious or contemplative.
- Mechanics: parrying, base building, time loops, dialogue choices, procedural exploration or local co-op.
- Setting and presentation: folklore, science fiction, historical fantasy, pixel art, hand-drawn animation or first-person perspective.
Then add one adjacent quality. If you like a large open-world role-playing game, search for the smaller-scale qualities you actually value—party relationships, tactical combat or exploration—rather than “open world” alone. Adjacent searches expose you to different production sizes and series structures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKeep a simple note with three columns: why it looks interesting, what you need to verify and your decision. This prevents a striking trailer from making you forget practical questions such as platform, accessibility options, multiplayer support or whether the game is still in development.
Use Steam as a set of separate discovery tools
Steam is most useful when you treat its features as different search modes instead of relying on one recommendation carousel. The Steam Discovery Update documentation describes tag and description searches, personalized suggestions, curator recommendations, the Discovery Queue and controls for reducing unwanted recommendations.

Search tags and descriptive terms
- Open the Steam store and enter a genre, mechanic or theme you want to explore.
- Combine a broad term with a differentiator, such as “turn-based tactics” plus “mystery,” or “cozy” plus “management.”
- Open several results in new tabs and read the store descriptions rather than judging only by capsule art.
- Use the tags shown on promising pages to refine the next search. Remove a tag that keeps returning the same familiar type of game.
Tags are useful for finding neighbors of a known favorite, but they are community and catalog labels rather than a formal taxonomy. A game may be tagged inconsistently, and a popular tag can dominate results. Read the description, screenshots and feature list before deciding that a title fits.
Separate personalized suggestions from curator recommendations
Personalized suggestions use your Steam activity and the catalog’s available signals. They are convenient for a quick scan, especially after you have played enough varied games for your account to express multiple interests. Curator recommendations are a different route: a person or publication explains why a title is worth attention. Follow curators whose criteria you understand, and inspect the reasoning instead of treating a positive label as a universal endorsement.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Use both routes deliberately. If recommendations keep circling back to sequels of games you already own, switch to tags or a curator with a different focus. If a curator’s list is too narrow, return to open search for a wider sample.
Work through the Discovery Queue
The Discovery Queue presents a sequence of store pages for quick decisions. Use it as a sampling tool, not a commitment:
- Open a queue item and check the genre, tags, release state and system requirements.
- Wishlist a game you may want to revisit, follow it if you want update notifications, or mark it as not interested when it is clearly unsuitable.
- Write one short reason for each decision. “No local co-op” is more useful than a vague feeling that the game is not for you.
- Return later with a different starting point—such as a tag or curator—so the queue does not become your only source of ideas.
The not-interested or ignore control is valuable when the same unsuitable recommendations recur. It narrows your future feed, but it cannot infer every preference from one click; use it for clear mismatches rather than games you have not examined.

Turn one good game into a creator trail
After you find a game you genuinely enjoy, stop searching the whole catalog for a moment. Open the developer’s or publisher’s Steam creator homepage. These pages can show other releases and series associated with that creator, allowing you to move from one title to a wider catalog.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- From the game’s store page, open the linked developer or publisher name.
- Scan the creator’s earlier releases and any series grouping. Note differences in genre, camera perspective and age; a studio’s catalog is rarely uniform.
- Open the store page for each plausible match and verify current platform support, language, multiplayer mode and reviews.
- Follow the creator when you want recent releases to appear in recommendations and want release notifications.
- Wishlist individual games you may buy later. A creator follow is not a substitute for tracking a specific title.
This method is especially effective for unfamiliar franchises because a studio may have a small but coherent design identity that store-wide recommendations cannot express. It also protects you from assuming that a similarly named game comes from the same team: confirm the creator on the official store page.
Use Steam Next Fest to test upcoming PC franchises
Steam Next Fest is designed for games that are not yet released and centers on playable demos. Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes it as “a weeklong event focused on promoting upcoming games with playable demos.” The documentation says the event recurs three times a year—in February, June and October—but the exact dates and participating titles change, so check the current Steam event page before planning time around it.
- Open the current Next Fest event page during the active period.
- Filter or browse by genre, then save a realistic number of candidates instead of downloading everything.
- Play the opening section of each demo long enough to evaluate controls, pacing and performance.
- Record what the demo establishes and what it cannot answer, such as late-game depth, final pricing or launch stability.
- Wishlist games that interest you and follow their store pages for announcements. Remove a wishlist entry if the project’s direction no longer fits.
A demo is evidence about an early build, not a guarantee about the final release. Note technical problems separately from design preferences: a stutter may be fixed, while a slow combat system is probably intentional. Because the event is temporary, a game can leave the event before you have time to play it; use its regular store page afterward for the latest status.
Find unfamiliar series on Nintendo Switch
Nintendo’s Indie World pages present selected independent games for Switch through showcases and lists. They are useful when you want a concise, editorially chosen set rather than thousands of search results.

- Open the current Indie World page for your region.
- Make a shortlist based on genre, tone and release status, not only on the presentation order.
- Open each game’s Nintendo eShop listing to verify whether it is available in your country, whether it has released, and whether a demo is offered.
- Check the store listing for supported languages, players, file size and any age rating relevant to your household.
- Wishlist or follow the title through the tools available in your regional eShop.
Indie World is a curated selection, so it can make scanning easier while omitting games that would appear in a broad catalog search. Nintendo’s pages and storefronts are region-specific: price, release timing, ratings and demo availability may differ from examples shown in another country. Do not infer that a game shown in one presentation is immediately purchasable everywhere.
Use PlayStation Indies as a curated shortlist
PlayStation Indies highlights selected independent games and includes downloadable demos for some titles. The page is best treated as a starting index that leads you to individual PlayStation Store listings.
- Open the PlayStation Indies feature page and identify games matching one of your chosen genres or mechanics.
- Follow the game’s store link and check the correct console generation, release status and edition.
- Download a demo when one is listed. Confirm the demo’s supported platform and whether progress carries into the full game; the store page is the authority for those details.
- Read the current description for online requirements, accessibility features, local multiplayer and language support.
- Add promising unreleased games to your wishlist or follow their store updates.
PlayStation’s feature page is not a complete directory of independent development. It is a human-selected route that can reveal a series you would not find through a publisher-focused search, but you should return to the regional store page for live availability and pricing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Browse ID@Xbox, then verify subscription access
ID@Xbox promotes independent games and points to selected titles that can be played through Game Pass. Use it as a discovery channel, not as a promise that every listed game is currently included in the subscription.
- Browse the current ID@Xbox listings and filter mentally by the type of game you want; the page’s selection may mix released and upcoming projects.
- Open the individual Xbox store listing to confirm release status, console or PC support and multiplayer requirements.
- If you intend to use Game Pass, check the live Game Pass catalog immediately before installing. Inclusion, edition and regional availability can change.
- For an upcoming title, follow its store page rather than assuming a future subscription launch.
A Game Pass label on a promotional page is not enough to establish access for every country, device or subscription tier. The current Xbox listing and your account’s catalog determine whether you can play it under your plan.

Build a repeatable 30-minute discovery session
A routine prevents endless scrolling and gives each unfamiliar franchise a fair evaluation.
- Choose a constraint (2 minutes): select one genre, one mood and one practical requirement, such as “turn-based, atmospheric, playable offline.”
- Generate candidates (8 minutes): use Steam tags, a creator page, an official console spotlight or the current Next Fest page.
- Verify fit (8 minutes): check platform, release state, player count, language, accessibility information and system requirements on the official store listing.
- Try or watch the right amount (10 minutes): play a demo when available. If there is no demo, watch only enough official footage to understand controls and pacing, then read the description for missing facts.
- Make a decision (2 minutes): wishlist, follow, buy, download through a verified subscription, or discard with a recorded reason.
Limit each session to five or six candidates. A smaller list produces useful follow-up actions, while a hundred-item wishlist becomes another form of avoidance.
Evaluate an unfamiliar franchise before spending money
Confirm what is actually available
- Is the game released, in early access, in a demo period or merely announced?
- Does your platform run the listed edition, and does the store page identify a separate console or PC version?
- Does your region show the same price, rating, language support and release date?
Separate design fit from production risk
Read player feedback for recurring, specific observations rather than a single score. Look for comments about controls, save systems, performance, accessibility and unfinished content. For an upcoming game, treat promises as plans and keep expectations proportional to the amount of playable material.
Check the franchise signal
A first game may not yet have a sequel, while an older series can be new to you. Look for the creator’s other releases, consistent naming and official series information. Do not assume that a game is a franchise merely because its store page uses a dramatic subtitle.
Use demos responsibly
A demo can answer whether movement, combat, writing style and interface suit you. It usually cannot establish total length, late-game variety, final optimization or the quality of post-launch support. Keep those unanswered questions in your notes rather than converting a short trial into a prediction.
Common discovery mistakes and fixes
| Mistake | Why it happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Searching only “indie” | The label is broad and may return a repetitive mix of genres | Combine a genre or mechanic with a mood, setting or presentation tag |
| Relying on one recommendation feed | Convenience makes an algorithm feel comprehensive | Rotate among tags, curators, creator pages and showcases |
| Confusing a showcase with a catalog | Official presentations are easier to scan than stores | Use the showcase for leads, then search the full store for adjacent titles |
| Assuming a demo represents the final game | The playable build is immediate and persuasive | Record which questions the demo cannot answer and revisit the store page near launch |
| Assuming subscription access | Promotional pages mention a service alongside selected games | Verify the live subscription catalog, edition and region before relying on access |
| Ignoring regional storefront differences | Videos and articles often show another country’s store | Check your own account’s listing for price, date, rating, language and demo status |
How to combine the platforms without duplicating effort
Start where you already own games. A PC player can use Steam tags to generate a broad list, then move to creator pages and Next Fest demos. A Switch owner can begin with Indie World, verify the eShop listing and then search by the game’s distinctive mechanic for related releases. A PlayStation player can use PlayStation Indies for a shortlist and demos, while an Xbox player can pair ID@Xbox browsing with a live Game Pass check.
Cross-platform discovery is most useful when the same franchise appears in more than one place. Compare the actual edition and feature set: a console version may differ in controls, performance options, downloadable content or multiplayer support. Keep one note per game with the store links you use, the platform you intend to play and the date you verified availability. Store pages change, so a decision made months ago should be checked again before purchase.
A practical checklist for your next unfamiliar series
- Choose two or three taste signals before searching.
- Use at least two discovery mechanisms, such as tags plus a creator page.
- Check whether the game is released, upcoming or an early build.
- Try a demo when one is available, especially during Steam Next Fest or on a PlayStation Store listing.
- Verify your platform, region, edition, language and multiplayer requirements.
- Follow the creator or store page only when you want future updates.
- Wishlist specific games and use not-interested controls for clear mismatches.
- Recheck subscription inclusion and regional availability immediately before relying on access.
The result is a sustainable habit: taste-based search finds possibilities, creator trails reveal related series, curated console pages reduce scanning time, and demos let you test unfamiliar ideas before committing. You do not need to predict the next blockbuster; you need a repeatable way to give different creators a fair look.
