How to Disclose Affiliate Links Clearly in AI-Generated Answers and Summaries

If an AI-generated answer or summary includes an affiliate recommendation, place a plain-language commission disclosure beside that recommendation or link. Make the financial connection visible in the same text block, rather than expecting readers to find it in a profile, a footer, or a separate policy page. This applies general U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) endorsement guidance to AI answer formats; the cited FTC materials do not establish a separate AI-specific disclosure rule.

What should an affiliate disclosure say?

Say plainly that you may earn money when someone buys through the link. For example: “I may earn a commission if you buy through this link.” The FTC’s endorsement FAQ gives another example: “I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.” Choose wording that accurately describes your arrangement.

Do not assume that “affiliate link” is clear to everyone. FTC staff says consumers might not understand that phrase on its own to mean the publisher is paid when a purchase happens. The FAQ says “Paid link” placed right next to an affiliate link should adequately convey the link’s nature. A direct statement about commissions and purchases is often clearer in a short answer. Where should the disclosure appear?

Put it immediately before or alongside the specific recommendation and its outbound link. FTC staff advises that “The closer the disclosure is to your recommendation, the better”; separating the two can make readers miss which recommendation the disclosure covers.

  • One recommendation: Keep the disclosure, product or service recommendation, and link together in the same visible paragraph or item.
  • Several recommendations: Make clear which links are monetized, placing a disclosure beside each relevant recommendation or grouping only links whose status is unambiguous.

A general disclosure elsewhere may provide useful context, but it does not make a distant affiliate link self-explanatory. The practical test is whether a reader can connect the commission statement to the recommendation without searching.

Make the disclosure noticeable in the answer format

Use straightforward wording and display it where the endorsement appears. FTC influencer guidance cautions against burying disclosures in profile pages, collapsed text, hashtag clusters, or only at the end of a video. It also says platform disclosure tools are not guaranteed to be effective on their own; the brand and endorser remain responsible for effective disclosure. Read the FTC’s Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers and its endorsement FAQ.

For audio, video, or interfaces that hide or collapse text, adapt the disclosure to the surface where the recommendation is encountered. Make it audible or visible with the endorsement, and consider people who see only part of a video or stream. FTC advice about videos and live streams concerns those formats; applying the same approach to an AI answer component is a practical editorial inference, not an AI-specific FTC ruling.

Amazon Associates links need an additional program statement

For Amazon Associates, Amazon’s program guidance requires the statement “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.” Amazon also says to disclose near affiliate links. Treat the required site statement and the disclosure beside a particular recommendation as separate parts of your implementation: the sitewide wording does not by itself tell a reader which link in a short answer earns a commission. Amazon’s agreement page lists an update date of October 15, 2025. See Amazon Associates’ Operating Agreement.

Use this quick check before publishing

  • Specificity: Does the wording say that you may earn a commission or receive payment from purchases?
  • Proximity: Is it beside the recommendation or link it qualifies?
  • Visibility: Can readers see it without opening a profile, expanding unrelated text, or hunting through a policy page?
  • Format fit: Is it readable or audible in the place and format where the recommendation appears?

These are practical checks drawn from FTC guidance, not a formal FTC scoring rubric. An AI platform’s label or feature should not be treated as an automatic substitute for a clear disclosure; FTC materials caution that platform tools may be insufficient.

What the guidance does—and does not—establish

The cited FTC sources address endorsements and digital or social communications. They support applying clear, conspicuous, nearby disclosure principles to affiliate recommendations in AI-generated answers, but they do not provide an explicit, current FTC interpretation tailored to AI-generated answer snippets or summaries. Accordingly, describe this as a practical application of general U.S. guidance, not as a special AI-specific legal mandate. These sources also do not settle requirements in jurisdictions outside the United States.

A 2018 study in Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction examined more than 500,000 YouTube videos, 2.1 million Pinterest pins, and a user study of 1,791 participants. In the content sampled, only about 10% of affiliate marketing content on both platforms contained any disclosure; explanatory disclosures were more readily noticed and understood than less explanatory forms in that study. It did not examine AI-generated answers, so its results should not be generalized to current answer engines. The FTC’s 2023 announcement of its revised Endorsement Guides notes changes including a definition of “clear and conspicuous” and caution about platform disclosure tools.
