If more than one matching entry appears, disable each one. This turns off finger touch and the Surface pen input path together, while a physical keyboard and mouse continue to work.
If you only want to stop the on-screen keyboard, or you want to change pen behavior without disabling touch, use the separate Windows settings described below.

Choose the control that matches your goal
Surface has separate controls for the touchscreen hardware, pen preferences, and the touch keyboard. Selecting the wrong one can disable more input than you intended.

Disable the Surface touchscreen, pen, and other touch accessories
This is the supported method when you need to shut down the touchscreen input device. It does not require uninstalling a driver.

- Open Device Manager. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
- Find the touchscreen device. Expand Human Interface Devices.
- Disable it. Right-click HID-compliant touch screen and choose Disable device. Confirm the prompt if Windows displays one.
- Repeat for every matching entry. Some Surface configurations show multiple HID-compliant touch screen entries. Disable each entry if you want all touchscreen input stopped.
- Test non-touch input. Use a physical keyboard or mouse to confirm that your normal desktop controls still work. Those non-touch devices are not disabled by this action.
What this switch disables
Microsoft’s Surface guidance warns that disabling touch also disables touch accessories, specifically Surface Pen, Surface Dial, and the Windows Touch Keyboard. In practice, this is an all-touch-input shutdown rather than a finger-only switch: the pen’s inking and input path depends on the same disabled touch system.
Re-enable touch later
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices.
- Right-click each disabled HID-compliant touch screen entry.
- Select Enable device.
If you disabled several entries, enable each one to restore the complete touchscreen function.
Change pen behavior without disabling touch
If your objective is to change what the pen does rather than shut off touch, use the Pen & Windows Ink page. These controls let you set hand preference and configure the pen shortcut button while leaving the touchscreen available.

Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Open Pen & Windows Ink.
- Adjust the hand-preference and pen-button options shown for your Surface and pen.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Open Pen & Windows Ink.
- Change the hand-preference and shortcut-button settings you need.
These settings customize pen behavior; they do not replace the Device Manager procedure when you need the underlying touch device disabled.
Disable only the touch keyboard
Turning off the touchscreen through Device Manager also removes the Windows Touch Keyboard. If the keyboard is the only nuisance, leave the touchscreen device enabled and change the keyboard’s own setting instead.
Windows 11
- Open Taskbar settings from the taskbar context menu or through Start > Settings > Personalization > Taskbar.
- Find Touch keyboard.
- Set it to Never.
This controls when the on-screen keyboard is shown; it does not disable finger touch, pen input, or other touch accessories.

Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Open Typing.
- Turn off the option that displays the touch keyboard when no physical keyboard is attached.
The wording can vary slightly by Windows 10 build, but the control is located under the Typing settings page.

Why tablet mode is not the touchscreen switch
Tablet mode changes the Windows interface layout and behavior; it does not disable the HID touchscreen device. Disabling the touchscreen in Device Manager is therefore different from changing tablet-style behavior.
Windows 11 has no manual tablet-mode toggle. It switches tablet behavior automatically when a keyboard is detached or attached, or when the device changes form factor. Changing that behavior will not provide a substitute for the Device Manager touchscreen switch.

Troubleshoot a missing or faulty touchscreen entry
The HID-compliant touch screen entry is missing
- Install available Windows updates.
- Install available Surface updates, including firmware updates supplied for your model.
- Use Microsoft’s Surface troubleshooting guidance to restore the relevant touch drivers or firmware.
A missing entry can prevent the normal disable or enable procedure because Windows is not presenting the touchscreen device to Device Manager.
The entry has an error or touch stopped working after a change
- Check Windows and Surface updates first.
- Use the Surface guidance for restoring the touch driver or firmware associated with your model.
- Do not uninstall the touchscreen driver merely to disable touch. Disabling the device is reversible; uninstalling it creates a driver-recovery problem.
Important Surface Pro X warning
Microsoft specifically warns against uninstalling drivers on Surface Pro X. Restoring those drivers requires a full system reset, so use Disable device rather than Uninstall device when your goal is simply to stop touch or pen input.

Common situations and the safest choice
You need a touch-free workstation
Disable every HID-compliant touch screen entry in Device Manager. This also disables Surface Pen, Surface Dial, and the Windows Touch Keyboard, so plan to use a physical keyboard or mouse.
You keep brushing the screen but still need the pen
The documented Surface control does not provide a separate “finger off, pen on” hardware switch. Disabling the touchscreen also disables the pen input path. Use the Pen & Windows Ink settings for pen preferences, and keep the touchscreen enabled if pen input must remain available.
The on-screen keyboard appears unexpectedly
Use the Windows 11 Touch keyboard > Never setting or the Windows 10 Typing setting. Do not disable the entire touchscreen unless you also want to stop pen and other touch accessories.
You detached a keyboard and Windows changed its layout
That is tablet-mode behavior, not evidence that the touchscreen device was disabled. Windows 11 changes tablet behavior automatically according to whether a keyboard is attached and the device’s form factor.

Before you disable touch: a quick checklist
- Save open work, especially if you rely on the touch keyboard for text entry.
- Connect a physical keyboard or mouse if you do not already have one available.
- Decide whether you also need Surface Pen or Surface Dial; both stop working when touch is disabled.
- In Device Manager, note whether one or multiple HID-compliant touch screen entries are listed.
- Use Disable device, not Uninstall device.
Restoring a normal touch setup
To return to the original arrangement, enable every disabled HID-compliant touch screen entry. If touch or pen input does not return afterward, check Windows and Surface updates and follow the model-specific driver or firmware recovery guidance rather than uninstalling drivers. On Surface Pro X, avoid driver removal because recovery requires a full system reset.
