Chrome does not have one universal “turn off AI” switch. On a desktop, you must manage Gemini in Chrome, Chrome’s on-device AI models, the AI Mode button in the address bar, and saved AI Mode activity separately. Android has a separate Gemini auto-browse control, while work or school computers may be governed by an administrator. Use the section that matches what you want to stop: hiding an icon, revoking permissions, deleting local model files, or removing account history are different actions.
Chrome AI controls at a glance
The right setting depends on whether you are trying to remove a shortcut, stop a capability, delete local files, or erase activity associated with your Google Account. The controls below are independent; changing one does not automatically change the others.

How do I turn off AI in Chrome on a desktop?
Work through the relevant controls below. You can disable one feature without disabling the others, or use all of them for the closest available equivalent to an “AI off” configuration.
1. Turn off Gemini in Chrome’s visibility and permissions
- Open Chrome on your computer.
- Select the three-dot menu, then choose Settings.
- Open AI innovations and select Gemini in Chrome.
- Under Preferences, turn off the options that show Gemini in the browser, the Mac menu bar, or the Windows system tray. The exact options shown depend on your operating system and account eligibility.
- Under Permissions, turn off any capability you do not want Gemini to use. The documented controls include Precise location, Microphone, sharing the current tab by default, and Let Gemini browse for you.
These switches change where Gemini appears and what it can access; they do not uninstall Chrome or remove every AI service connected to Google Search. If you disable precise location, Google says Gemini cannot use your precise location and can derive only an estimated location from your IP address.

Gemini in Chrome is rolling out, so the section or some individual options may not appear for every user. Availability can vary by Chrome version, account, country, and rollout status. If the section is missing, update Chrome through its normal About Chrome screen and check again later; do not assume that a missing menu means all AI functions are disabled.
2. Disable on-device AI and remove Chrome’s local models
Use this control when your concern is generative-AI model files stored on the computer or features that run with those models.
- Open Chrome’s three-dot menu and choose Settings.
- Select AI innovations.
- Switch On-device AI off.
- Confirm the change if Chrome displays a confirmation prompt.
Google states that turning this setting off deletes the on-device generative-AI model files. Features that rely on those models stop working, and Chrome will not download the models again while the setting remains off.

Google does not recommend that approach, and deleting files yourself may not prevent Chrome from downloading them again when the controlling setting is still enabled.
Disabling on-device AI is narrower than disabling Gemini or web-based AI. It affects models stored and used locally by Chrome; it does not remove cloud processing, AI Mode in Google Search, or every Gemini integration.

3. Hide AI Mode and related controls in the address bar
If you mainly want the AI Mode button out of sight, use the address-bar menu:
- Open any Chrome window.
- Right-click the address bar (the omnibox).
- Turn off Always show AI Mode.
Chrome may also hide the Add tabs and more control as part of this address-bar preference. This action changes the interface only. It does not disable AI Mode on the web, prevent AI-generated results in Google Search, revoke Gemini permissions, or delete past activity.

If the control reappears after a profile reset, Chrome update, or policy change, repeat the same address-bar action and check whether the browser is managed. A policy can override a local preference.
4. Delete AI Mode history and associated account records
Removing the button does not remove searches that were already saved. To delete AI Mode activity:
- Open a New Tab page.
- Open AI Mode history.
- Delete an individual entry, or choose the option to delete all AI Mode history.
Google cautions that deleted searches can remain visible in My Activity for a short period. They are automatically deleted there within 24 hours, or you can open My Activity and delete them manually sooner.

For a complete removal of a particular search, also delete it from Search history. One interaction can create two Search history entries when you begin with an AI Overview and then continue into AI Mode, so deleting only the AI Mode-history entry may leave a related Search history record.

History deletion is separate from disabling features. You can erase past activity while leaving AI Mode available, or keep AI Mode hidden while retaining existing account records.
How do I remove Gemini from Chrome?
“Remove Gemini” can mean several different things. Chrome does not document a single uninstall procedure for Gemini in Chrome. Use the combination that matches your goal:
- Remove the visible entry points: In Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome, turn off the options that show Gemini in Chrome, the Mac menu bar, or the Windows system tray.
- Stop specific access: In the same page’s Permissions area, disable precise location, microphone access, default current-tab sharing, and Let Gemini browse for you as needed.
- Remove local generative-AI files: Turn off On-device AI in Settings > AI innovations. This is the documented method that deletes Chrome’s local model files and blocks their redownload while disabled.
- Remove past interactions: Delete AI Mode history, then check My Activity and Search history for related records.
Hiding Gemini’s icon does not delete its models, and turning off on-device models does not disable cloud-based Gemini or AI features on the web. Treat these as separate privacy and interface decisions rather than steps in one uninstall wizard.
How do I disable AI Mode in Chrome?
Chrome provides a local visibility control, not a universal switch for AI Mode everywhere. To hide the address-bar option, right-click the address bar and turn off Always show AI Mode. This removes the shortcut from the omnibox, but AI Mode can still be available through Google Search on the web.

If your objective is to prevent AI Mode from being offered on managed computers, an administrator can use Chrome Enterprise policies for AI Mode integrations. The policy applies only when Chrome is configured with Google as the default search engine. A personal user generally cannot override an enforced organization policy from the browser’s regular settings.
To remove data rather than the shortcut, use the AI Mode history procedure and then review Search history and My Activity. Interface visibility and account-data deletion are independent operations.
Android: turn off Gemini’s “Let Gemini browse for you” feature
Android uses a separate settings path from desktop Chrome. Google’s Android help documentation describes an experimental auto-browse control:
- Open Chrome on your Android phone or tablet.
- Open Chrome Settings.
- Choose Gemini in Chrome.
- Turn off Let Gemini browse for you.
Auto-browse is described as experimental, and you can stop a task while it is running. This Android switch does not imply that desktop Gemini, on-device models, AI Mode history, or address-bar controls have also been disabled. Platform-specific menus and availability can differ, so use the controls shown on the device where you want the change to apply.
What if Chrome is managed by work or school?
On an organization-managed computer, Chrome Enterprise policies can control Gemini integrations, AI Mode integrations, and content sharing. These policies may hide a setting, force a value, or prevent you from changing it.
- Gemini and AI Mode integrations: An administrator can decide whether these integrations are available in the managed browser.
- Content sharing: An organization can control whether Chrome shares content with connected AI features.
- Default search engine requirement: Google notes that the AI Mode integrations policy applies only when Chrome is using Google as its default search engine.
- Web-versus-browser distinction: Chrome’s content-sharing policy does not affect AI Mode used directly on the web.
If a setting is greyed out, repeatedly returns after you change it, or displays a “managed by your organization” notice, contact the administrator. A local profile change cannot reliably override an enforced policy. If you are the administrator, review the relevant Chrome Enterprise policies for Gemini integrations, AI Mode integrations, and content sharing rather than asking each user to change a local preference.
Which control should you use?

Troubleshooting when an AI control is missing or ineffective
The “AI innovations” section is not visible
Gemini in Chrome is rolling out and may not be available to every account. Check that you are using the current desktop Chrome build, then look again under Settings. Regional availability, account eligibility, and staged rollout status can affect the labels you see. On Android, use the separate Gemini in Chrome page instead of expecting the desktop layout.
AI Mode still appears after hiding it
Confirm that you changed Always show AI Mode from the address-bar context menu, not a Google Search preference. The address-bar option controls the shortcut only. AI Mode can still appear on the web, and an organization policy may restore or enforce the browser setting.
Models return after you delete them manually
Use Settings > AI innovations > On-device AI and switch it off. Manual file deletion is not the supported management method and does not necessarily prevent a future download. While the setting is off, Chrome says it will not download the models again.
Deleted history is still visible
Check all three locations: AI Mode history, My Activity, and Search history. Google says My Activity can take up to 24 hours to auto-delete a removed search, although you can delete it there manually. Also look for a second Search history entry if the interaction started in an AI Overview and continued in AI Mode.
A permission switch is unavailable
The option may not be offered for your account, platform, or rollout stage, or it may be controlled by an administrator. On a managed device, contact the organization’s Chrome administrator rather than repeatedly resetting the browser profile.
A practical “AI minimized” checklist
For the least visible and least locally stored AI configuration that Chrome documents, complete the applicable items below on each platform you use:

- On Android, open Settings > Gemini in Chrome and turn off Let Gemini browse for you if you do not want the experimental auto-browse feature.
- If Chrome reports that it is managed, ask the administrator which AI and content-sharing policies are enforced.
Chrome’s current controls are deliberately split by feature and platform. There is no documented single switch that removes every AI capability from every Chrome surface, so verify each setting against the specific behavior you want to stop.
