How to Disable or Delete Outlook in Windows 10 Without Losing Mail

There is no single Windows 10 command called disable Outlook. Choose the smallest change that matches your goal: remove one account from classic Outlook, remove an account from new Outlook, delete an Outlook profile, change the default app for email links, or uninstall the Office installation that contains Outlook. Removing an account stops that account from syncing in Outlook but does not close the online mailbox. Deleting a profile removes its account configuration while leaving associated PST files on the computer. Uninstalling Office removes local applications, not documents you created with them.

Back up any required PST files and confirm important calendar items are available in webmail or the provider cloud before making a change. The instructions below separate classic Outlook, new Outlook, Windows 10 Mail and Calendar, and Office installation types so you can avoid deleting data unnecessarily.

Choose the right way to disable or delete Outlook

Your intended result determines the safe procedure. The four common meanings of “disable” have different scope and data consequences.

Action Scope Data impact Reversibility
Remove an account One account inside classic or new Outlook Classic Outlook removes that account’s offline cached content; the online mailbox remains. New Outlook can remove Microsoft Cloud data when you choose removal from all devices. Usually reversible by adding the account again, subject to any cloud-only data deletion.
Delete an Outlook profile Every account configured in one classic Outlook profile Profile account configuration is removed. PST files associated with the profile remain on the computer. Reversible by creating or selecting a profile and adding the accounts again.
Change the default mail app Windows 10 email links and mail handlers No mailbox, cache, profile, or PST data is deleted. Yes. You can select Outlook again later.
Uninstall Office or Outlook Local Office applications in the selected installation The applications are removed. Documents, workbooks, and other files you created remain on the computer. Reinstall the product to use the applications again.

If you only want links such as mailto: to stop opening Outlook, change the Windows default app instead of removing accounts or uninstalling Office. If one account is the problem, remove only that account. Use profile deletion when the profile itself is damaged or contains several accounts you no longer want configured.

Protect mail and calendar data first

Removing a sign-in from Outlook is not the same as deleting the mailbox at its provider. It can still remove the local copy that Outlook kept for offline use, and a new Outlook option can remove Microsoft Cloud data across Outlook clients. Complete these checks before you click Remove.

  1. Identify the Outlook edition. Classic Outlook is the traditional desktop program with a File tab and Account Settings. New Outlook has the newer interface and uses View settings or File > Account info. Windows 10 Mail and Calendar is a separate app that may offer a Try the new Outlook switch.
  2. Locate PST files. A Personal Folders File (.pst) can contain mail, contacts, and calendar data stored locally. Copy any required PST to a backed-up location before deleting a profile or removing an account. Do not assume that an item visible in Outlook is also present in webmail.
  3. Check the provider’s webmail or cloud account. Sign in through the provider’s web interface and verify that important messages and calendar entries are present there. Cloud-only calendars or other items in new Outlook may be permanently lost if you select removal from all devices.
  4. Record account details. Make sure you know the address, password or sign-in method, and any organization-specific setup needed to add the account again. Removing an account from Outlook does not deactivate it, but you may still need administrator or provider assistance to reconnect it.
  5. Close Outlook before file work. Exit Outlook and wait for it to finish closing before copying or moving a PST. A file that is in use may not copy correctly.

The safest sequence is to preserve local files, verify server-side data, and then make the narrowest change that solves the problem. Uninstalling the program is the broadest option and should be reserved for when you no longer need any Office application in that installation.

Remove one account from classic Outlook

Use this procedure when classic Outlook should remain installed but must stop sending and receiving for one account. Microsoft states that removing an email account from classic Outlook does not deactivate the email account itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open classic Outlook.
  2. Select File in the upper-left corner.
  3. Choose Account Settings, then choose Account Settings again from the menu.
  4. On the Email tab, select the account you want to stop using.
  5. Click Remove and confirm the warning.
  6. Restart Outlook and check that the account no longer appears in the account list or in Send/Receive operations.

This action stops sending and receiving for that account in Outlook and deletes its offline cached content from the PC. It does not close the online mailbox, cancel the address, or erase messages that remain on the provider’s servers. Add the account again through File > Add Account if you later need it in this Outlook installation.

When the Remove button is unavailable

An account can be required as the default account or be controlled by an organization policy. If Outlook will not let you remove it, first select another account as the default when the interface permits that choice, then reopen Account Settings. On a managed work computer, contact the administrator rather than deleting files or registry entries to force removal.

Remove an account from new Outlook

New Outlook has a separate account-management path. The exact entry point can be View settings or File > Account info, depending on the build.

  1. Open new Outlook.
  2. Open View settings, or select File > Account info.
  3. Open Accounts, then Your accounts.
  4. Find the account and choose Manage.
  5. Select Remove and read the scope presented in the confirmation dialog.
  6. Choose the local-removal option if you only want the account gone from this Outlook installation. Choose Remove from all devices only when you intentionally want the account and Microsoft Cloud data removed across Outlook clients.

Microsoft warns that Remove from all devices removes the account and Microsoft Cloud data across Outlook clients. Cloud-only calendars or other items that are not stored elsewhere may be permanently lost. If your goal is simply to stop synchronization on one PC, do not select the all-devices option.

After removing the account

Close and reopen new Outlook, then confirm the account is absent and that any remaining accounts still work. Verify required calendar entries in the provider’s webmail. Removing the account from the app does not by itself deactivate the underlying mailbox, so the address can continue to receive mail through other clients or web access.

Delete an Outlook profile in classic Outlook

A profile is a container for account configuration, data-file associations, and Outlook preferences. Delete a profile when you want to remove all accounts in that profile, not merely one account.

  1. Open classic Outlook and select File.
  2. Choose Account Settings, then Manage Profiles.
  3. In the Mail Setup window, select Show Profiles.
  4. Select the profile you no longer need.
  5. Click Remove and confirm.
  6. If Outlook asks which profile to use at startup, select an existing profile or create a new one and add the accounts you still use.

Deleting a profile removes the accounts and configuration stored in that profile. Microsoft specifically states that any Personal Folders Files (.pst) associated with the profile remain on the computer. Those files can be opened from another profile through Outlook’s data-file controls, provided you have not deleted or moved them yourself.

Profile deletion versus account removal

Account removal is targeted: it affects one account and its offline cache. Profile deletion is broader: every account in that profile is removed at once, even though PST files remain. If several profiles are listed, select the exact one shown as the profile Outlook uses; deleting a different profile will not change the active setup.

Stop Outlook from opening email links

If Outlook works normally but clicking an email address launches it, change Windows 10’s default email handler. This does not remove an account, profile, PST, or Office application.

  1. Open the Windows 10 Settings app.
  2. Select Apps, then Default apps.
  3. Find the Email category.
  4. Select the current app shown for Email.
  5. Choose the mail application you prefer.
  6. Test a mailto: link in a browser or document. If Outlook still opens, check whether the application that created the link has its own mail preference.

This change affects Windows mail links and handlers only. Outlook can remain installed and signed in, and existing mail remains untouched. You can return to the same Settings path and choose Outlook later.

Uninstall Outlook or the Office installation

Uninstalling is appropriate when you want the local Office applications removed, not merely an account disconnected. The available scope depends on how Outlook was installed.

Microsoft 365 or Office suite installation

In most suite installations, Outlook cannot be uninstalled as an independent application. Microsoft’s supported route is to remove the whole Microsoft 365 or Office product from Control Panel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
  3. Select the listed Microsoft 365 or Office product.
  4. Choose Uninstall and follow the prompts.
  5. Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it.

This removes the Office applications supplied by that product. It does not remove documents, workbooks, or other files you created with them. Outlook data files can still exist on the disk, so preserve any PST files before cleaning up old folders.

Standalone Outlook

A separately licensed, standalone Outlook installation is the exception to the suite rule. If Control Panel lists Outlook as its own product, select that entry and use Uninstall. Do not remove a similarly named shared Office component unless you intend to affect other Office programs.

Microsoft Store installation

Microsoft’s Office uninstall guidance describes removing the Microsoft.Office.Desktop package with PowerShell when a Microsoft Store installation cannot be removed through Settings. This is an administrative operation and should be used only after you have confirmed that the installation is the Store package. Removing the wrong package can affect other Office applications. If the package type is unclear, use Control Panel’s product listing or obtain help from the device administrator rather than running a generic removal command.

Microsoft uninstall troubleshooter

For supported Office versions, Microsoft also provides an uninstall troubleshooter. Use it when the normal Control Panel removal fails, leaves a damaged installation, or reports that the product cannot be found. The troubleshooter removes the installation; it does not close your online mailbox or replace a backup of local PST data.

What to do with the Try the new Outlook switch

The Windows 10 Mail and Calendar apps can display a Try the new Outlook switch. Microsoft states that the switch cannot be turned off inside those apps. In other words, there is no supported Mail-and-Calendar setting that permanently hides the switch for an individual user.

On managed devices, Microsoft recommends removing the Mail, Calendar, and People apps to prevent users from downloading new Outlook through them. That is a device-management decision: removing those apps also removes their Windows 10 mail and calendar experience. Home users who only want Outlook to stop opening links should change the Default apps setting instead of removing Mail and Calendar.

Troubleshoot the result you actually want

Outlook still receives mail after account removal

Check whether another Outlook account is active or whether you removed the account from one profile while Outlook is opening a different profile. Also remember that removing an account from Outlook does not deactivate the online mailbox; webmail and other devices can continue to receive messages.

Old messages disappeared from the computer

Removing an account deletes its offline cached content. Look in the provider’s webmail first. If the messages were stored in a PST, locate the PST backup and open it from the current profile. Do not delete the original file until you have confirmed that the backup opens and contains the expected folders.

Calendar items are missing after using new Outlook

Check the provider’s web calendar and any exported or backed-up files. If you selected removal from all devices, Microsoft Cloud data may have been removed across Outlook clients, and cloud-only items may not be recoverable. This is why calendar verification belongs before account removal, not after it.

Outlook opens despite changing Default apps

Return to Settings > Apps > Default apps > Email and confirm the preferred application is still selected. Some browsers, document editors, or corporate tools maintain their own mail-link setting. Change that application’s preference as well, if it has one.

Uninstall is missing or fails

Determine whether the product is a Microsoft 365 suite, standalone Office, or Microsoft Store package. Suite products generally require removing the suite; Store packages may require Microsoft’s PowerShell-based guidance; corrupted supported installations can be handled with Microsoft’s uninstall troubleshooter. Avoid deleting the Outlook executable or random Office folders, because that can leave a broken installation and does not cleanly remove account configuration.

Windows 10 support status matters

Microsoft’s Windows support documentation says that free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Outlook procedures can still work on an existing Windows 10 installation, but the operating system no longer receives that free security-support stream. If you are deciding whether to keep Office and Outlook on the PC, include the operating system’s support status in your migration or upgrade plan.

A practical decision checklist

  • Only one account is unwanted: remove that account from the Outlook edition you use.
  • Every account in one classic profile is unwanted: delete that profile, keeping PST files backed up.
  • Outlook should remain installed but stop launching for links: change Settings > Apps > Default apps > Email.
  • No Office applications are needed from the installation: uninstall the Microsoft 365 or Office product through Control Panel, or remove a confirmed standalone product.
  • The Mail and Calendar switch is the problem: understand that Microsoft does not provide an in-app off switch; managed devices can remove the Mail, Calendar, and People apps.
  • You are unsure where data is stored: stop, copy PST files, and verify webmail and cloud calendars before removing anything.
