The setting depends on the phone model, region and software build (for example, a manufacturer’s Android skin). Identify those details first, then follow the matching manufacturer guide. If your phone has no rear-display control, use Android’s general battery tools and test whether the display is actually contributing to the drain instead of assuming it is.
Rear screens are implemented differently across phones. A control that exists on one model may be absent, renamed or limited to a few presets on another. The steps below show how to find the correct control safely, what to do when it is missing, and how to separate rear-screen behavior from ordinary battery problems.

What a rear display can do
A secondary panel on the back of a phone may show information while the handset is face down, provide a camera viewfinder for rear-camera selfies, or wake when the phone is moved or touched. Xiaomi describes the Mi 11 Ultra’s rear mini display as showing the time, battery level and notifications when the phone lies face down, while also serving as a rear-camera selfie viewfinder. Those functions are specific to that design; they are not a definition of how every rear display works.
Rear-display controls can therefore cover several different behaviors:
#1 Best Overall
- [Ultra-Lightweight Ear Buds Designed for Small Ears] Each earbud weighs only 3.7g and features a compact, ergonomic in-ear design made especially for small ears. Secure, low-profile, and comfortable for workouts, all-day wear or overnight sleeping. The ultra-slim profile sits flush in your ear with no hard edges poking or rubbing, so you can even sleep on your side without discomfort.
- [Immersive Stereo Sound with TOZO OrigX Technology] TOZO OrigX tuning delivers clear vocals, balanced mids, and natural stereo sound for music, podcasts, and videos.
- [Long Battery Life for Daily Use] Get up to 7 hours of playtime on a single charge, with up to 32 hours total using the charging case—ideal for workdays, commuting, and extended listening sessions.
- [Bluetooth 5.3 & Stable Connection] Bluetooth 5.3 provides fast pairing, stable wireless performance, and reduced dropouts as you move around home or office.
- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Whether the panel is enabled at all.
- Which information remains visible, such as a clock, battery indicator or notifications.
- What wakes it: orientation, touch, a camera mode or another trigger.
- Whether the panel remains available as a camera viewfinder after other content is disabled.
Do not infer that a phone supports all of these choices. Check the options actually offered for your exact model. A rear panel may be an always-on information screen, an orientation-triggered status panel, or primarily a camera accessory. Those designs can have entirely different controls and power behavior.
Identify the exact phone and software before changing anything
Write down the model name and software version before searching for instructions. “Android” alone is not enough: manufacturers add their own settings, and even two phones from the same company can use different menus.
Find the model
- Open Settings.
- Open About phone, About device or a similarly named page.
- Record the complete model name and model number, not just the product family.
Find the software build
- Remain in the device-information area and note the Android version.
- Record the manufacturer interface and its version, such as MIUI or HyperOS where applicable.
- Note the region or carrier variant if the phone displays one; regional firmware can expose different features.
Use all three pieces of information when searching the manufacturer’s support site. Xiaomi’s support index separates model-specific instructions from general MIUI and HyperOS material, which is why a menu path copied from another model can be wrong. A model sold under a similar name may have different firmware, and a later update can rename or remove a control.
Find the rear-display control without guessing a menu path
Because no single path is established across phones, use the phone’s own Settings search and then verify the result against the official guide for your model.
- Open Settings and use its search field.
- Try terms such as
rear display, back display, secondary display, cover display, rear screenoralways-on display. Manufacturers use different labels. - Open only results that clearly refer to the back panel. A front-screen always-on setting may not control the rear panel.
- Read the page’s description before changing a switch. Check whether it controls notifications, camera preview, wake behavior or the entire panel.
- Confirm the same setting in the manufacturer’s model-and-version support guide. If the guide does not list a rear-display setting, the firmware may not provide a user-facing disable switch.
Search the support site using the model number rather than a broad product family. If the page offers separate instructions for MIUI and HyperOS, select the interface shown on your phone. Do not rely on screenshots from a different region or an older software build without checking the labels on your device.
Do not apply instructions written for a similar-looking phone. The Mi 11 general quick-start material, for example, does not establish rear-display controls for the Mi 11 Ultra. A familiar Android menu name is not proof that it operates the rear panel.
Choose between fully off, limited content and camera-only use
When your phone offers several presets, compare them by effect rather than by label. The following framework helps you decide what to keep.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11| Option to look for | What it changes | When it fits | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fully off | Prevents the rear panel from showing its normal information or waking for ordinary use. | You want the least possible visual interruption and a clean battery test. | Whether the camera can still invoke the panel as a viewfinder. |
| Limited content | Leaves a clock, battery indicator or selected widget while removing other items. | You use the panel occasionally but do not want notifications or animations. | Exactly which items remain and whether they wake the screen. |
| Notification-free | Suppresses alerts while retaining another rear-screen function. | The distraction is caused by message previews or repeated lighting. | Whether icons, vibration or wake events still occur. |
| Orientation- or touch-triggered | Changes when the panel wakes rather than what it displays. | You want the screen dormant unless deliberately activated. | Whether face-down detection, movement or accidental touches still wake it. |
| Camera viewfinder only | Retains rear-camera selfie framing while removing routine information, if the firmware supports that separation. | The camera function is useful but the standby display is distracting. | That the camera mode continues to work after other content is disabled. |
These are decision categories, not guaranteed controls. Use the labels and descriptions shown on your device. Some firmware combines content and wake behavior in one preset, while other firmware separates them. If the only choice is a small set of presets, select the least active one and verify what it actually does rather than assuming “minimal” means fully off.

- Open the rear-display settings page identified by Settings search or the official guide.
- Capture a screenshot of the original choices, or write them down, so you can restore the previous behavior.
- For a complete shutdown, select the option described as disabling the rear display or its idle/standby behavior. If the page separates content from wake triggers, change both.
- For customization, turn off notification categories first, then remove widgets or information panels you do not need. Leave only the function you intend to use.
- Disable automatic wake triggers if the panel is lighting unexpectedly. Test orientation and touch separately.
- Lock the phone, place it face down and wait through a normal wake interval. Then pick it up, receive a test notification and open the camera to verify the result.
- If the camera viewfinder stopped working, return to the page and re-enable the camera-specific option rather than restoring every notification.
A setting that merely hides content may not stop the panel from waking. Conversely, a wake-control setting may leave a clock visible. Test both display content and wake behavior. Also check whether a scheduled mode, charging state or camera launch temporarily overrides your chosen setting.
Keep a record of every change if you are troubleshooting. Changing several battery settings at once makes it impossible to tell which change mattered. Restore the original configuration one item at a time if the result is worse.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck whether the rear display is really causing battery drain
No rear-display-specific battery measurement establishes a universal percentage of savings, extra hours or distraction reduction. A phone’s battery use also changes with radios, apps, brightness, temperature and signal conditions. Treat disabling the rear panel as a testable change, not a proven diagnosis.
Use Android’s built-in battery page
- Open Settings and go to Battery or Battery and device care.
- Review the usage chart and the list of apps or system components using the most power.
- Look for an entry that explicitly identifies the rear-display service. If none appears, the panel may be grouped under the system or display category.
- Record the battery percentage, screen-on time and major activities before changing settings.
Google’s Android guidance recommends device-dependent measures such as lowering brightness, restricting apps with high battery use and enabling Battery Saver where available. These actions address general consumption; they do not prove that the rear display caused your particular drain. Battery pages can also classify a manufacturer service under a broad system label, so the absence of a named rear-display line is not conclusive.
Run a controlled comparison
- Charge the phone to a convenient level and record the percentage.
- Keep network conditions, brightness, notifications and normal use as similar as possible for a fixed period.
- Use the phone with the rear display enabled, then repeat a comparable period with it disabled or limited.
- Compare percentage change and the battery page’s usage breakdown. Repeat on another day if the result is close.
This is an observation of your device, not a laboratory measurement. A short test can be distorted by a download, a weak signal or a background update. Note whether the phone was face down, in a pocket or on a table, because those conditions affect how often orientation and notification events occur. If the difference disappears when the phone is cool or on a strong network, another factor may be responsible.
Reduce other common sources of drain
Lower front-screen brightness
Set brightness to a comfortable level and review adaptive-brightness behavior. A bright main screen can dominate power use, making a small rear panel appear responsible when it is not. Compare similar brightness levels during both parts of your test.
Restrict unusually active apps
On the Battery page, inspect apps with disproportionate background use. Apply the phone’s available background restriction or battery-optimization control only after checking whether the app needs real-time notifications, location or synchronization. Restricting a messaging, navigation or wearable app can delay information you expect to receive.
Use Battery Saver when appropriate
Battery Saver can reduce background activity and other functions on supported phones. Read the on-screen effects before enabling it, especially if you rely on messaging, navigation or wearable synchronization. Use the same Battery Saver state in both comparison periods or leave it off for a cleaner rear-display test.
Keep the phone cool
Google states that a battery drains much faster when it is hot, even when the phone is not in use. Remove heat sources, avoid leaving the phone in direct sun and allow it to cool before judging the rear-display change. Heat can mask or exaggerate any difference caused by a display setting. Do not place a hot phone under bedding or use extreme cooling; simply move it to a shaded, ventilated place.

- Turn off rear-screen notification previews or limit them to essential categories.
- Remove clocks, animations or widgets that repeatedly attract attention.
- Disable orientation- or touch-based wake behavior if those triggers are available.
- Use the phone’s notification controls or Do Not Disturb schedule for periods when any alert is distracting.
- Keep the camera-viewfinder function only if it is useful; otherwise disable its automatic activation.
These choices may reduce interruptions without claiming a particular battery saving. The result depends on how often the panel would otherwise wake and on the rest of the phone’s workload. If previews expose private messages when the phone is face down, disabling previews is also a privacy choice, even when you keep a generic notification icon.
Mi 11 Ultra: what is documented and what is not
The official Mi 11 Ultra product description documents the rear mini display’s purposes: checking time, battery life and notifications while the phone is face down, and framing rear-camera selfies. It lists the phone’s 5000mAh battery capacity, but that figure describes the whole battery and says nothing about rear-display consumption.
The product page does not provide a disable or customization path. Therefore, do not treat a generic Mi 11, MIUI or HyperOS instruction as an Mi 11 Ultra procedure without confirming the exact model and installed build in Xiaomi’s support material.
An older third-party article discussed limited presets and an unofficial mirroring application. It warned that the application was incomplete and could encounter issues. That dated report is not a dependable current setup guide. Avoid installing unofficial utilities or issuing advanced commands simply to force unsupported rear-screen behavior; they can introduce instability, privacy exposure or update problems. A new phone or accessory is not required to solve this settings problem, and buying another rear-display device would not diagnose the battery behavior of the phone you already own.
Why Android documentation does not supply a universal answer
Android Open Source Project multi-display documentation describes platform behavior rather than consumer controls for a manufacturer’s rear panel. For Android 10, it notes that the status bar, notifications, settings and lock screen are unsupported on secondary displays. That platform statement does not tell you how a particular manufacturer implemented its rear screen, nor does it guarantee that a rear panel follows ordinary external-display rules.
Manufacturer firmware can add a dedicated service, a camera-only mode or proprietary wake triggers. Consequently, an Android version number by itself cannot determine the correct menu path. Platform documentation should not be used as a substitute for the model’s support page, and a secondary-display limitation in Android does not prove that a manufacturer’s rear panel is unsupported or uncontrollable.

Settings search returns nothing
Check the model number, software build and region again. Then consult the manufacturer’s guide for that exact combination. Some phones expose only a few presets, and some do not expose a user switch at all. Look under display, lock-screen, camera and special-feature sections as well as the search results, but do not change unrelated front-screen settings as a substitute.
The panel still lights after you disabled content
Return to the rear-display page and look for a separate wake, orientation, touch or notification control. Hiding widgets does not necessarily stop wake events. Test with the phone face down and then on its back so you can identify whether orientation is the trigger.

Notifications are gone but battery use is unchanged
Review the Battery page, front-screen brightness, active apps, network conditions and temperature. The available evidence does not establish that every rear display is a significant drain source. If the phone is hot while idle, investigate heat and background activity before blaming the rear panel.
A camera selfie preview stopped working
Reopen the rear-display settings and look for a camera-specific permission or mode. If the firmware couples camera preview to the rear panel, a complete shutdown may intentionally remove that function. Re-enable only the camera option if the interface permits separate controls.
An unofficial tool suggests advanced commands
Do not make it your routine fix. Dated reports describe incomplete software for rear-display customization, and unsupported commands can fail after an update. Prefer documented settings or leave the feature unchanged. Do not grant an unknown utility broad accessibility, notification or device-administrator access merely to gain a setting the manufacturer did not expose.
When a service check is sensible
Seek manufacturer or qualified repair support if the rear panel remains lit continuously, flickers, becomes unusually hot, shows burn-in, or drains the phone rapidly even after documented settings and ordinary battery checks. A persistent hardware or firmware fault is different from a preference setting and cannot be diagnosed from the display menu alone. Before contacting support, note the model, software build, when the behavior began, whether it occurs while charging, and which documented settings you tested.

No. Rear-display controls are manufacturer- and model-specific. Confirm the exact model, Android version, interface version and region before following a menu path.
Will turning off the rear display definitely improve battery life?
Not necessarily. No verified measurement establishes a universal saving. Run a comparable enabled-versus-disabled test and check other causes such as brightness, apps, signal and heat.
Can I keep the rear camera viewfinder while disabling notifications?
Possibly, but only if your firmware separates camera preview from ordinary rear-display content. Check for a camera-specific option and test it after changing notification settings.
Why does the screen wake even though I removed the clock?
Content and wake triggers may be separate. Look for orientation, touch, notification or motion controls and disable the triggers you do not need.
Does the Mi 11 Ultra have a documented universal off switch?
The official product description documents its uses but does not provide a disable path. Check Xiaomi’s guide for your exact Mi 11 Ultra build; do not substitute instructions for the regular Mi 11.

Identify the exact phone, software build and region before changing a rear-display setting. Use the manufacturer’s documented controls to turn off the panel, limit content or stop wake triggers, and test the camera viewfinder separately. If no switch exists, reduce notifications and triggers, then use Android’s battery tools and temperature checks to find the real source of drain. There is no verified universal savings figure, so avoid unsupported apps and commands.
