This setting controls the single Fn/Globe-key action. It is separate from Apple’s Control-Command-Space and Fn-E shortcuts for Character Viewer, so changing the key menu does not necessarily remove those keyboard combinations.

Disable the Fn or Globe key emoji shortcut
Apple calls the emoji picker Character Viewer. It lets you browse and enter emoji, symbols, accented letters and characters from other languages. On compatible keyboards, pressing Fn (often shown with a globe symbol) can be configured to open it. To stop that behavior:
- Choose Apple menu › System Settings.
- Select Keyboard in the sidebar.
- Find the menu labeled Press fn key to or Press Globe key to. The wording depends on the key and keyboard configuration.
- Open the menu and choose Do Nothing.
After you select Do Nothing, pressing that Fn/Globe key alone should no longer open Emoji & Symbols. Apple documents this control in its Keyboard settings on Mac guide and its Use emoji and symbols on Mac guide.

Use another action instead of disabling the key
If you still want the key to do something useful, choose one of the other actions shown in the same menu. Apple lists options including Change Input Source, Show Emoji & Symbols and Start Dictation. The available choices can vary with your macOS release, keyboard and input-language setup.

Only options actually displayed on your Mac can be selected. Do not assume every macOS version or keyboard exposes the same list.
Changing the key action is not the same as disabling every Character Viewer shortcut

- Fn/Globe key action: a single-key behavior configured in the Keyboard settings menu described above.
- Keyboard combinations: Apple lists Control-Command-Space and Fn-E as shortcuts for showing Character Viewer in its Mac keyboard shortcuts documentation.
Choosing Do Nothing changes the first item. Apple’s documentation treats the key action and the shortcut combinations as separate controls; it does not state that changing the Fn/Globe menu removes Control-Command-Space or Fn-E. Therefore, if the picker still appears after you disable the key action, test whether one of those combinations is being pressed accidentally or generated by another utility.
Can you remove Control-Command-Space or Fn-E?
Apple provides general instructions for changing or disabling configurable keyboard shortcuts. Its Use macOS keyboard shortcuts guide says, “You can change or disable keyboard shortcuts to make them easier to use.” The guide explains the general shortcut-customization area in System Settings, but the reviewed Apple instructions do not confirm that the built-in Character Viewer entries for Control-Command-Space or Fn-E are exposed there on every Mac.
Use this distinction when troubleshooting:
- First disable the Fn/Globe action through System Settings › Keyboard.
- Open the keyboard-shortcut settings only if you need to inspect configurable system shortcuts.
- Look for an explicit Character Viewer or Emoji & Symbols entry before changing anything.
- If no such entry appears, do not assume the built-in shortcut can be removed through that panel. Apple’s published instructions do not guarantee that it can be edited on your configuration.
Do not describe the general shortcut panel as a confirmed way to disable Control-Command-Space. The documented, reliable change for the accidental one-key launch is the Fn/Globe action menu.

How to open the emoji picker after disabling the key
Disabling the one-key action does not remove Character Viewer from macOS. Apple documents several other ways to open it.

Use the Edit menu
- Place the insertion point in an app that accepts text.
- Choose Edit › Emoji & Symbols from the menu bar.
- Browse or search Character Viewer, then select the character to insert it.
This route is useful when you want occasional access without assigning the Fn/Globe key to the picker.
Show the Input menu in the menu bar
- Open Apple menu › System Settings › Keyboard.
- In the Text Input area, select Edit.
- Enable Show Input menu in menu bar.
- Use the Input menu in the menu bar to open Character Viewer.
The exact placement of Text Input controls can differ between macOS releases, but Apple documents this menu-bar method in its emoji and symbols guide. It is especially convenient if you switch input sources and want the viewer available from the same menu.

Which setting should you change?

Troubleshooting when the option is missing
You see “Press fn key to,” not “Press Globe key to”
That is normally a label difference rather than a different function. Apple says the wording depends on the key and keyboard configuration. Open whichever of those two menus appears and look for Do Nothing.
The menu has different choices
Available actions can vary by macOS release, keyboard and configured input sources. Select the closest available option that meets your goal. If Do Nothing is present, it is the direct choice for suppressing the one-key action; if it is absent, the published instructions do not provide a universal replacement path.
The picker still opens
Check the trigger rather than repeatedly changing the Fn/Globe menu:
- Press the Fn/Globe key by itself after selecting Do Nothing.
- Make sure the picker is not being opened with Control-Command-Space or Fn-E, which Apple lists separately.
- Check whether an external keyboard, remapping utility or accessibility tool is sending a shortcut combination. Apple’s setting changes the macOS Fn/Globe assignment, not third-party remappings.
- If the picker appears only inside a particular application, test Edit › Emoji & Symbols in another text field to identify whether the behavior is application-specific.
You want to restore the picker later
Return to System Settings › Keyboard, open the same Fn/Globe menu and select Show Emoji & Symbols if that choice is listed. You can also leave the key disabled and use the Edit menu or Input menu whenever you need Character Viewer.
What the Character Viewer includes
Character Viewer is broader than an emoji-only panel. Apple describes it as a way to browse and enter emoji, symbols, accented letters and characters from other languages. That is why disabling the Fn/Globe trigger does not remove a general macOS text-entry feature; it only changes one route into it.
If you frequently need accented letters or non-Latin characters, consider assigning the key to Change Input Source instead of Do Nothing, provided that action appears in your menu. If your only concern is accidental emoji insertion, Do Nothing avoids repurposing the key and keeps manual Character Viewer access available.

Apple’s current guides use the labels above, but the visible wording and available actions may differ according to macOS release, keyboard model and key configuration. A built-in Mac keyboard with a globe-marked key may show Press Globe key to, while another configuration may show Press fn key to. Use the label displayed on your system rather than looking for an identical screenshot or wording from another release.
The instructions do not require installing software, changing Terminal settings or modifying files. They use the standard Keyboard pane and can be reversed by selecting another action later.
A quick decision checklist
- Accidental picker from one key: set the Fn/Globe menu to Do Nothing.
- You want a different shortcut function: choose an available alternative in that same menu.
- You still need emoji occasionally: use Edit › Emoji & Symbols or enable the menu-bar Input menu.
- Control-Command-Space still works: remember that Apple lists it as a separate Character Viewer shortcut.
- You cannot find a Character Viewer shortcut entry: do not assume the general shortcut panel can disable it; Apple’s reviewed instructions do not confirm that control is editable on every Mac.
Bottom line
The dependable way to stop the Mac’s accidental one-key emoji launch is Apple menu › System Settings › Keyboard, then Press fn key to or Press Globe key to → Do Nothing. That changes the Fn/Globe action without removing Character Viewer itself. Keep the separate Control-Command-Space and Fn-E shortcuts in mind, and use the Edit menu or Input menu when you still want access to emoji and symbols.
