Choose what “disable mods” should mean
There are three different outcomes that are often confused. Pick the one you actually need before changing files.

Always stop a dedicated server before changing its mod files. Back up the world and configuration first, especially when a world has previously contained modded content.
Disable every mod in the tModLoader client or Host & Play
Normal procedure
- Start tModLoader.
- Open the Mods menu from the main screen.
- Choose Disable All. This changes the enabled state for the installed mods; it does not uninstall their files.
- Close tModLoader completely.
- Launch tModLoader again and test the world or multiplayer connection.
Restarting matters because mods can load assemblies, configuration, or world hooks during startup. A menu change without a full relaunch can leave the current process in its previous state.

If the Mods menu will not open
A broken or incompatible mod can prevent the menu from appearing. Use one of these recovery methods:
- Shift-start: hold Shift while tModLoader starts. This skips normal mod loading so you can reach the interface and disable mods.
- Reset the enabled list: close the game, find the tModLoader saves directory, open its
Modsfolder, and deleteenabled.json. Relaunch tModLoader. The file records which mods are enabled; removing it clears that selection rather than deleting the.tmodpackages.
Keep a copy of enabled.json if you may need to restore the previous selection. If tModLoader still fails after the reset, move on to log inspection and add mods back in controlled groups rather than restoring all of them at once.
Change mods on a dedicated tModLoader server
A dedicated process does not use the client’s Mods-menu click. The server has its own mod directory and enabled list, and every change takes effect only after the process is stopped and started again.

Server-side files that control loading
The documented management layout uses these files and settings:
enabled.jsonrecords the mods selected for loading.install.txtlists mods that the management script should install..tmodfiles are the packaged mod files present in the Mods directory.modpath=identifies the Mods directory used by the server configuration.modpack=inserverconfig.txtselects a modpack when the server is started with that configuration.
Do not assume that deleting a package is equivalent to disabling it. A package can remain on disk while the enabled list excludes it, and a management script can reinstall or update files listed for installation.
Use the management script to disable or replace the set
- Stop the running server cleanly. Do not edit
enabled.jsonwhile the process is writing its state. - Back up the world file,
serverconfig.txt, the Mods directory, and the current enabled list. - Inspect the server’s Mods directory. Note the existing
enabled.json,install.txt, and.tmodfiles so you can restore the prior setup. - Replace the enabled list with the desired set. For a complete tModLoader shutdown, use an empty or otherwise disabled selection appropriate to your installation; for troubleshooting, remove only the suspected entries.
- If the server should use a named collection, set the desired
modpack=value inserverconfig.txt. Verify thatmodpath=points to the directory containing the intended files. - If the purpose is to stop the management script from installing or updating mods during this run, add the documented
--no-modsargument to the management command. This controls installation and update work; it is not a substitute for changing the runtime’s enabled selection. - Start the server with
start-tModLoaderServer.shor the launcher configured for your installation.
Watch the startup output for the loaded-mod list and errors. A server can start successfully while still loading an unintended mod if the wrong configuration file, modpack, or modpath was selected.

Temporarily disable one suspected mod
For an intermittent crash, make a copy of the working enabled list, remove only the suspected entry, and restart. Test the same world and action that caused the problem. If the failure disappears, re-enable the mod alone or with a small group to distinguish a mod defect from an interaction between two mods. Avoid changing the world and the mod list simultaneously, or you will lose a reliable comparison.
Docker deployments
In the documented Docker layout, the Terraria directory beside the compose files contains the server configuration and data, including enabled.json, install.txt, serverconfig.txt, world files, and .tmod packages. Edit the files in that persistent directory, not an ephemeral path inside a running container.
- Stop the service and copy the Terraria data directory as a backup.
- Edit the enabled list, installation list, or
modpack=andmodpath=settings required by your goal. - Bring the service up again so the server process reads the new files.
- Rebuild the container only when the image itself or its managed installation needs updating. A routine enabled-list change normally requires a service restart, not an image rebuild.
After the restart, check container logs for the effective mod list. If the container recreates files from environment variables or an initialization script, make the change in that source as well; otherwise the next deployment may overwrite your manual edit.

How to switch from tModLoader to a truly vanilla server
Disable All does not convert tModLoader into vanilla Terraria. It leaves the tModLoader executable and runtime in use, even when no content mods are enabled.
- Stop the tModLoader server and make a separate backup of the world and configuration.
- Install or locate the separate Terraria dedicated-server executable for the same Terraria version.
- Launch that executable with a vanilla server configuration and a world intended for vanilla use.
- Connect with an unmodded Terraria client and verify that the server is using the expected world, port, and settings.
Do not treat a modded world as guaranteed to make a lossless transition between runtimes. Modded worlds may contain tiles, items, NPCs, or saved data that vanilla Terraria does not understand. Keep the original world untouched and test a copy first. The tModLoader documentation does not provide a universal guarantee that every modded-world transition will preserve all content.

Server and client installations do not share one universal switch. tModLoader assigns each mod a ModSide classification that determines where it runs and how it is synchronized.

Therefore, a player can still see installed or active client-side mods after you empty the server’s list. Ask each player to check their own Mods menu when the classification is Client or NoSync. For Both mods, compare the client and server lists and versions before attempting to join.

The game still crashes at startup
- Confirm that tModLoader was fully closed before changing
enabled.json. - Use the Shift-start recovery path, then verify that the Mods menu shows the intended disabled state.
- Check that you edited the saves directory belonging to the tModLoader installation you actually launch; multiple installations can have separate data directories.
- Restore only the backed-up enabled list after testing, not the entire Mods folder, so a known-bad package is not reintroduced accidentally.
The dedicated server loads mods you removed
- Check which
serverconfig.txtthe launcher passes to the process. - Verify the active
modpath=and inspect that directory’senabled.json. - Look for an initialization or management step that recreates
install.txtor selects amodpack=. - Restart the process after every configuration change; an already-running server will not reread the list reliably.
Players can connect but encounter missing content or errors
Compare the server and client logs, then check the ModSide classification of the mod named in the error. Multiplayer failures often identify the involved mod in one of those logs. For a controlled test, disable all mods on both sides, confirm that the connection works, and re-enable compatible Both-side mods in small groups.
The world behaves differently after disabling a mod
Some worlds contain blocks, inventories, NPCs, or other data supplied by a mod. Disabling that mod can make content unavailable or alter loading behavior even when the server itself starts. Restore the backup copy for recovery, or re-enable the required mod before making further world changes. Do not overwrite your only world copy while testing.
