ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini each separate some combination of saved memories, references to earlier conversations, activity history, connected-app data, and model-improvement settings. For a private one-off conversation, use ChatGPT Temporary Chat, Claude Incognito, or Gemini with Keep Activity turned off (or a temporary-chat option where your account offers one). Then separately delete existing memories or activity if you do not want them retained.
Menu labels and availability can differ by plan, country, age, device, and whether an administrator manages a work or school account. Use the labels visible in your own account, and check them again after product updates.

What each privacy control actually changes
“Memory,” “personalization,” and “history” describe different data flows. A setting can stop an assistant from using information in a future reply without deleting the conversation that contains it. Conversely, deleting a chat may leave a separately stored memory behind.

None of these modes means that a conversation is instantly erased from every system. Safety monitoring, service operation, feedback handling, legal obligations, and workplace policies can require limited retention.

Before you change anything
Decide whether you need a permanent change or a private session
- Use an account-wide switch when you want future conversations to stop using a category of information.
- Use a one-off private mode when you need one conversation that should not enter ordinary history or memory.
- Delete saved memories, chats, or activity separately when your goal is removal of information already collected.
Record the account type
Personal, family, business, school, and enterprise accounts can expose different controls. A workspace administrator may impose retention or disable a setting. Mobile and web interfaces can also roll out changes at different times.
ChatGPT: turn off memory, references, and history-related use
Disable memory and references to past chats
- Open ChatGPT and select your profile or account menu.
- Open Settings, then Personalization.
- Turn off the memory and reference switches shown for your account. Depending on the rollout, you may see Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage, or Saved memories.
- Read the confirmation text before accepting it. A switch can stop future use while leaving prior chats and saved entries intact.
ChatGPT treats saved memories and references to chat history as separate concepts. If Reference saved memories is available, disabling it prevents the saved details from being used in future responses. If Reference chat history is available, disabling it stops ChatGPT from drawing on information remembered from earlier chats. OpenAI says information remembered from past chats after that switch is turned off is scheduled for deletion from its systems within 30 days, but the original conversations remain in your chat list unless you delete them.
Delete a saved memory completely
Turning off a switch is not a purge. In Settings > Personalization, open Manage or Saved memories and remove individual entries, or use the account’s available control to clear them. For a detail to be fully removed, OpenAI says to delete both the saved memory and the chat in which you first provided the detail. Also remove copies in other places, such as Library files or connected apps, when they contain the same information.

Deletion and memory updates may take time to propagate. OpenAI may retain logs of deleted saved memories for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. That temporary log retention is different from the memory being available for ordinary personalization.
Keep one conversation out of history and memory
- Start a new conversation.
- Select Temporary Chat before sending your prompt. The entry point can appear in the new-chat screen or in the model/chat-mode selector, depending on the interface.
- Confirm that the temporary indicator is active, then send the conversation.
OpenAI’s Privacy Center describes Temporary chats as conversations that do not appear in history, do not create memories, and do not help improve models. They can still be processed for safety and service operation, so do not treat the mode as a promise of immediate destruction.

Stop account-wide model-improvement use
- Open Settings.
- Select Data Controls.
- Turn off the model-improvement setting shown for your account.
This control addresses use of your conversations to improve models; it is separate from whether chats are visible in your history and separate from saved-memory settings. If you submit feedback on a response, the feedback process can involve the associated conversation under the terms shown at submission time.
ChatGPT checks when a detail still appears
- Confirm that both saved-memory and chat-history reference switches are off; one does not necessarily disable the other.
- Look in Manage or Saved memories for an entry that still contains the detail.
- Delete the originating chat and any Library file or connected-app record that repeats it.
- Start a Temporary Chat to test behavior without changing your normal history again.
- If a control is missing, the account’s plan, region, age setting, platform, or workspace administrator may not provide it yet.
Claude: pause, reset, or bypass memory
Pause memory without deleting what Claude already knows
- Open Claude’s account menu and choose Settings.
- Open Memory.
- Choose Pause memory.
Pause stops Claude from using memory and from creating new memories while retaining the existing memory entries. It is the reversible choice when you want to stop personalization temporarily but may want the saved context later.

Erase all Claude memories
- Go to Settings > Memory.
- Choose Reset memory.
- Review the warning and confirm.
Reset permanently deletes all memories, including project memories, and cannot be undone. It does not serve as a substitute for deleting conversations from your chat list; those are separate records.
Disable memory for one ordinary chat
- Start a new chat before sending the first message.
- Open the + menu.
- Turn off Memory.
- Send the message after the indicator confirms the setting.
Claude will not use or add memory for that chat, but the conversation remains in history. Anthropic says it can still be found through past-chat search from other conversations, so this is a memory control, not a no-history mode.
Use Incognito for a no-history conversation
- Start a chat outside a project.
- Select the ghost icon to enable Incognito.
- Verify the Incognito indicator before sending sensitive content.
Anthropic states that Incognito chats are not saved to Claude’s memory or chat history. They are nevertheless retained for 30 days for safety, or longer when an organization’s retention policy requires it. Incognito conversations are included in the Enterprise Compliance API, so enterprise administrators may still be able to retain or retrieve them under their compliance rules.

When deleting a Claude conversation is not enough
Deleting or allowing a conversation to expire does not automatically remove memory entries that Claude generated from it. After deleting the chat, open Settings > Memory and remove the related entries, or use Reset memory if you intend to clear every memory. This two-step check prevents an old preference from continuing to influence unrelated chats.
Gemini: turn off Keep Activity and personalization
Stop future chats from appearing in Gemini Apps Activity
- On the Gemini website, open Settings and help.
- Select Activity.
- Click the On control next to Gemini Apps Activity.
- Choose Turn off to stop future activity recording, or Turn off and delete activity to combine the change with deletion of existing Gemini activity.
- Follow the confirmation prompts.
Google says that with Keep Activity turned off, future chats do not appear in Gemini Apps Activity and are not used to train its AI models unless you submit feedback. This does not prevent the service from processing a prompt that you actively send; Gemini must still receive and handle it to generate a reply.
Delete existing Gemini activity or change its retention period
- Open Gemini Apps Activity from the Activity controls.
- Delete individual prompts, a selected date range, or all available activity.
- Open the auto-delete setting and choose the period that fits your account: 3 months, 18 months (the default), 36 months, or Don’t auto-delete.
- Confirm the choice and check the activity list for the expected result.
Deleting Gemini Apps Activity does not delete information stored in other Google services. A document in Drive, an email, or data held by a connected service must be managed in that service as well.
Turn off personalization and connected-app access separately
Gemini’s Personal Intelligence and connected-app permissions are separate from Keep Activity. Open the relevant Personal Intelligence or connected-app controls and disconnect services you do not want Gemini to use. Google says Gemini can be used without connecting apps. Disconnecting an app, or deleting data inside that app, does not erase Gemini Apps Activity, so handle both records when you need a complete cleanup.
Use a temporary or no-activity chat
For a single conversation, turn Keep Activity off before starting it, or choose a temporary-chat option if your account and interface provide one. Keep Activity off is not zero retention: Google says conversations can remain associated with your account for up to 72 hours so Gemini can respond, process feedback, and protect Google, users, and the public. Sending feedback can provide additional context for service improvement even when ordinary activity saving is disabled.

Gemini checks when personalization continues
- Verify the Activity control shows Off, not merely that an old activity list was deleted.
- Review Personal Intelligence separately; turning off Keep Activity does not necessarily remove connected-app permissions.
- Check other Google services for copies of the information you want removed.
- Remember that a work, school, family, age-restricted, or regional account can expose different choices.

Common mistakes and how to recover
Assuming “off” means “deleted”
All three services distinguish future processing from historical records. After switching a feature off, use the service’s deletion screen to remove old memories, chats, or activity. Keep a short list of the exact detail you are removing so you can search for copies in connected files and apps.
Using a memory-off chat when you need no history
Claude’s per-chat Memory switch leaves the conversation in history. Choose Incognito instead. On ChatGPT, use Temporary Chat rather than merely disabling Memory. On Gemini, turn Keep Activity off before the conversation and check whether a temporary-chat choice is available.
Deleting a conversation but leaving a memory
Claude explicitly separates conversation deletion from memory deletion, and ChatGPT requires attention to both the saved memory and the originating chat for complete removal. After deleting a sensitive conversation, inspect the memory-management screen on that service.
Ignoring connected applications
A personal detail can be present in an uploaded file, cloud document, email, calendar, or another connected app. Removing the AI conversation does not necessarily remove that source. Disconnect the app and delete the source record according to that app’s own controls.

Temporary, Incognito, and Keep Activity-off modes reduce history and personalization, but providers still describe limited retention for safety, service delivery, feedback, compliance, or security. Do not submit information that must never be processed by a cloud service.
A practical privacy checklist
- Choose the service and account whose data you want to change.
- Open its memory, activity, or personalization settings and note which switches are actually present.
- Turn off saved-memory, past-chat reference, activity, model-improvement, and connected-app controls according to your goal.
- Delete existing memories, chats, or activity; do not assume the switch did that for you.
- Remove duplicate copies from uploaded files and connected services.
- For sensitive one-off work, start the service’s private mode before typing the first message.
- Check the confirmation state and repeat the review after a product or administrator policy change.
What the providers’ retention statements mean
ChatGPT
OpenAI’s current guidance gives a 30-day window for deletion of information remembered from past chats after Reference chat history is turned off, and up to 30 days for logs of deleted memories used for safety and debugging. The original chats remain until you delete them.
Claude
Anthropic’s Incognito guidance specifies 30-day retention for safety, subject to a longer organizational retention policy. Incognito prevents saving to memory and ordinary chat history; it does not override enterprise compliance retention.
Gemini
Google’s guidance specifies up to 72 hours of account-associated retention with Keep Activity off. The stated purposes are generating the response, processing feedback, and protecting Google, users, and the public. This is separate from the longer Gemini Apps Activity auto-delete choices of 3, 18, or 36 months, or no automatic deletion.

These controls are not universal promises about every account. Providers roll out features by plan, region, platform, age, and workspace policy. A missing switch may therefore reflect eligibility rather than a navigation mistake. If the labels in this guide do not match your screen, follow the closest current label in the same privacy area, read its explanation, and avoid assuming that two similarly named controls have identical effects.
